EPIC FLOOD vs MOTORCYCLE in Malaysia – Will the KTM 250 ADV make it through? šŸ‡²šŸ‡¾ [SE E39]

Previously on ā€œTwo Up and Overloadedā€ – On our way through the tropical country of Brunei,Ā Ā  we hit a torrential rainstorm. It wasĀ hours and hours of riding through the rain,Ā Ā  which then caused our phone that we use forĀ  navigation to die after getting water damage.

So it was like an iPhone 6. Oh my God, I’mĀ  already talking about it in past tense,Ā Ā  this is really bad. And although we fixed it, andĀ  the sun came out, we thought our water problemsĀ Ā  from the storm were far behind us. Unfortunately,Ā  though, as we continued to ride across the PanĀ Ā

Borneo Highway trying to complete our goal ofĀ  riding a motorcycle from tip to tip of the islandĀ Ā  of Borneo in East Malaysia, we realized that doingĀ  so during the rainy season has its drawbacks. Hey everyone! Nice to have you here. We areĀ  Tim, and Marisa Notier. I ride in the front.Ā Ā

And I’m in the rear. We travel the world and weĀ  pack too much gear. Oh, all the places we’ll go!Ā Ā  Through rain and through sleet and through mudĀ  and through snow. Oh, all the things we’ll see!Ā Ā

We’ve been to a country or two. Or three! Oh, allĀ  the fun we’ve had! To have you along, would makeĀ Ā  us real glad. So give us a like, and hitĀ  subscribe to join us along our epic ride. [This episode is dedicated to our Join the Journey Patrons]

[Join for as little as $1 a month! See link in the description below.] [Lawas – Malaysia] You can see the wind through our hair. That’s how fast we go. [Southeast Asia Journey – Day 120] Good morning, everyone! Today is another kindĀ  of cloudy, a little bit rainy day. We’re hopingĀ Ā

It should clear up, well at least that’s what theĀ  weather app says, a little bit. But as you can see,Ā Ā  it’s pretty gloomy. So we’re going toĀ  be riding all the way to Kota Kinabalu,Ā Ā  which is called KK, by the locals. And it is theĀ  biggest city of Sabah. We’re actually going toĀ Ā

Be exiting the state of Sarawak for the firstĀ  time and entering Sabah, a land of beautifulĀ Ā  beaches and the largest mountain in Borneo,Ā  and that is Kinabalu. So it should be really,Ā Ā  really pretty. We’re quite excited. FingersĀ  crossed the weather turns out okay today. AndĀ Ā

Yeah, we’re going to get packed up with our newĀ  rack on the back of the bike. Thank you to Tim. All right, let’s go. So we packed up that morning,Ā  excited for what the new day was to bring. I wasĀ Ā

Excited to test out my new rack that I made. OhĀ  yeah! It was very uh, it was either going toĀ Ā  be awesome or a complete failure. But I hadĀ  enough zip ties to hold pretty much, you know,Ā Ā

The moon in orbit for the rest of all time. Bam!Ā  Look at that! Wow! Starting on one side, going toĀ Ā  the other side. You can see Tim’s handiwork fromĀ  this side. Oh, we got a new wooden thing. Yes!

Big shout out to Temple of Moto for allowingĀ  us to stay in such a beautiful accommodation.Ā Ā  Because this hotel room is so awesome, we wantĀ  to thank Temple of Moto for helping us out andĀ Ā  supporting us in our journeys with a luxuriousĀ  room just like this. So, Temple of Moto is aĀ Ā

Motorcycle tour company that goes all acrossĀ  the United States to different national parks.Ā Ā  The roads that it rides on are incredible. TheyĀ  also have tours in Mexico and Europe as well,Ā Ā  and they are super awesome. We went with them inĀ  Yellowstone, and it’s an amazing tour company withĀ Ā

Very, very cool accommodations. So, check themĀ  out at TempleOfMoto.com. Bye, thank you so much! Bye! Very, very nice hotel. Here we go! The weatherĀ  was looking good, no rain so far, which was goodĀ Ā  because we had just fixed the phone from waterĀ  damage. And so we had it off. This is true. ThisĀ Ā

Is our tripod going lengthwise, our rain gearĀ  is in the blue bag, and then our stinky, stinkyĀ Ā  shoes are in the black bag. Nice. And that’s it,Ā folks. Except for the tank bag. It’s amazing when youĀ Ā  don’t have camping gear how little you actuallyĀ  need. But camping gear kind of needs panniers if youĀ Ā

Are going to have all of that for two people.Ā  Or at least at the comfort level that I want. That day we went from what was it? Sarawak intoĀ  Sabah? Yeah. And it’s kind of like… They’re twoĀ Ā  Malaysian states, so it’s kind of like IllinoisĀ  and Indiana bordered together. But in at leastĀ Ā  East Malaysia when you go from one state toĀ  the other, there’s a border there. And we hadĀ Ā

To do our whole passport and get a newĀ  stamp. We got another 90 days. It was odd to sayĀ Ā  the least. It would be like traveling across theĀ  States, and every state you go to you get likeĀ Ā  another 90 days. It was like an internationalĀ  border. In fact, people from Sabah who wantĀ Ā

To go into Sarawak, they do all the same customsĀ  procedures as they would going into Brunei, whichĀ Ā  is another country. It’s very, very interesting.Ā  This was an accumulation of borders over the lastĀ Ā  couple of days. We went from East Malaysia toĀ  Brunei, Brunei to East Malaysia. It was just…Ā Ā

Yeah, if you have a motorcycle in this part ofĀ  the world, you can just keep getting 90-day visasĀ Ā  over and over again. But get the extended passports,Ā  the thicker ones. Lot of stamps. Pro tip, pro tip. We’re in Sabah!

And you know what? In the United States, a lotĀ  of people that come from other countries say,Ā Ā  “Wow, you guys fly your flag all overĀ  the place. I see it everywhere.” Well,Ā Ā  Malaysia does the same thing. They fly theirĀ  flag everywhere. And not just the Malaysian flag,Ā Ā

Which looks very similar to the United StatesĀ  flag. It’s not the stars and stripes, it’s theĀ Ā  star and stripes. Yes! But also theyĀ  fly the state flags all over the place too. SoĀ Ā  in Sarawak, we were very accustomed to seeingĀ  that orange and red state flag, and now we wereĀ Ā

Entering into Sabah, which had this beautifulĀ  blue flag with the shape of the Mountain ofĀ Ā  Kinabalu on it. This is true. But it kind ofĀ  looked like an island because it does look likeĀ Ā  to a foreigner, you’re like, “I don’tĀ  know what that is, but that’s an island.” Yeah.Ā Ā

When you say it’s the same as America, IĀ  think there’s even more Malaysian flagsĀ Ā  everywhere. It’s just, you know, it’s likeĀ  ticker tape 4th of July everywhere you go.Ā Ā  But it’s a great country to be proud of becauseĀ  it is absolutely stunning and beautiful. And it has a cool flag. It does. So after our little border crossing,Ā  we wanted some food. You actually gotĀ Ā  off of the main Highway, the PanĀ  Borneo Highway, and decided, “Hey,Ā Ā  let’s go to the coast because we haven’t reallyĀ  seen the coast.” And there’s a little detourĀ Ā

That you can take. But we took this littleĀ  off-ramp, and we found somewhere that looked cool. There was a whole soccer team eatingĀ  there. Oh my gosh, they were the coolest. What team? Red Jaws. Red Jaws! Where are you from?Ā  America. Ohhh! Chicago. One, two, three. Red Jaws!

Go Red Jaws! Go Red Jaws! The town was called Sipitan, and everythingĀ  really was right on the oceanfront,Ā Ā  which was very cool. The food was good,Ā  and it was the perfect little rest stop.Ā Ā  But oh man, it was so hot. ItĀ  was very, very hot. Not the food,Ā Ā

But the weather. But we made at least aĀ  couple more subscribers there, so that was good. Thank you, mister! Thank you! ReallyĀ  great people. And we got back on the road, and…Ā Ā  It just started to dawnĀ  on us, which it already has for so long,Ā Ā

But Indonesia and Malaysia areĀ  just filled with just the kindest people andĀ Ā  just the most hospitable and friendly. There areĀ  friendly people all over this world, but like wow,Ā Ā  Malaysia and Indonesia just really were blowingĀ  our minds when it comes to friendliness. Woo! Woo!

The people here are super friendly. Yeah, right?Ā  We just met a soccer team. Yeah,Ā Ā  and you kind of veered off the main road to comeĀ  to this little town. I’m so glad you did. Yeah,Ā Ā  I saw that was by the ocean. The ocean’sĀ  kind of brown, the sea. I’m not sure.Ā Ā

But it’s kind of brown. It is brown.Ā  Yeah, but it’s still nice. It didn’t take long after we left the town ofĀ  Sipitang to get to a part of the road where all theseĀ Ā  cars were kind of lining up. We’re like, “Oh,Ā  is it more construction? What could it be?”

And usually we go around cars, but itĀ  didn’t take long for us to realize uh-oh,Ā Ā  this is not road construction. IĀ  was zipping through the middle,Ā Ā  and then I saw this just river going through the road. Yeah.Ā Ā

It was like an entire river had just takenĀ  over the road. It was that brown, muddy,Ā Ā  thick water from lots of flooding. From the rainĀ  before that we had experienced the day before. Once you get that momentum, you go, and youĀ  start plowing through that water, and you don’tĀ Ā

Stop. Because if you stop, you’re just going to getĀ  flooded. And… it’s crazy! And SoutheastĀ Ā  Asia is known for its small motorcycles, andĀ  there were some of those. And I kept lookingĀ Ā  out for them because I was like, “All right, ifĀ  a really small motorcycle can make it through,Ā Ā

Then we can make it through.” Even though ourĀ  motorcycle itself was quite small. 250 for aĀ Ā  Malaysian standard or an Indonesian standardĀ  is pretty big. But for us, that’s a very smallĀ Ā  motorcycle, and I’m wondering, where theĀ  air intakes? How high is the exhaust up offĀ Ā

The ground? Because the worst thing is there’s thisĀ  line of traffic, and we’re going to get stuck behindĀ Ā  a stopped car, and then our motorcycle is justĀ  going to fill up with water. I can’t stop though. Jesus. We can’t stop. Oh no! This river is so deep! Whoa!

You can really feel the water! Yeah. It was aĀ  rented KTM from Tay Motors, so shout out to them.Ā Ā  And welcome to this episode where we had noĀ  idea if we were going to flood the bike or not.Ā Ā

But you got it back just fine. Spoiler alert.Ā  Yeah, a lot of people say, “You know, ride it likeĀ Ā  you stole it, or ride it like you rented it.” And IĀ  don’t want to trash this thing. It’s been good toĀ Ā

Us. We just blessed it. We named it Koi, The RealĀ  McCoy. Yeah, that’s true. It has proven to be aĀ Ā  very nice little motorcycle. Absolutely. And thenĀ  here we are, you know, Yellow Submarine-ing it. But we are plowing through this water likeĀ  a speedboat. And again, you can’tĀ Ā

Stop once you’re going because all that water willĀ  just surround you. Absolutely. And the oncomingĀ Ā  traffic was just splashing us like we were atĀ  SeaWorld. Yes, this is true. We were definitelyĀ Ā  at an amusement park for motorcycles and vehicles.Ā  Everybody was kind of having fun. You can see itĀ Ā

In their eyes. Just grown adults playingĀ  in the big, big puddle. It could be disastrous,Ā Ā  but you might as well enjoy it. Well, the water’sĀ  so brown that you can’t see potholes. AndĀ Ā  the cars are going side by side, andĀ  I don’t know where that actual asphalt ends andĀ Ā

Then turns into the shoulder. And if I were to hitĀ  that, things could get a little bit squirrely. And no one was making a plethoraĀ  of room for each other to pass by because theyĀ Ā  were judging where they assumed the road was andĀ  trying to stick to that as much as possible. Yes,Ā Ā

And it wasn’t just the road that was flooded, itĀ  was all the sides of the flat landscape that weĀ Ā  were in that was flooded. So you just couldn’tĀ  tell where this road was. I mean, you just lookĀ Ā

In the distance where the road is again, andĀ  that’s where you’re riding towards, you know? Yes. I’m, “Woo!” I’m having a ball. I haveĀ  my Klim Adventure Gore-Tex boots, and they areĀ Ā  waterproof but not when it just goes over the top.Ā  You can’t swim in them and then expect to be like,Ā Ā

“Oh, my feet got wet. These boots suck.” SoĀ  they held up just as much as they could,Ā Ā  but that amount of water and when theĀ  traffic’s going by and splashing you…Ā Ā  I mean, I was getting water in my helmet.Ā  I had to close my helmet visor because it wasĀ Ā

Getting in my eyes. It’s too fun, no. I got my glassesĀ  on. It was really, really fun. I don’t knowĀ Ā  if you guys, a lot of you are motorcyclists,Ā  but when it starts to rain, there’s that hotĀ Ā  engine kind of steamy smell. And when it hitsĀ  the radiator, there’s a very specific, “Hey,Ā Ā

The radiator is soaked” smell. It kind of makes you nervous at first becauseĀ Ā  you’re like, “That’s a mechanical smell.” Yeah,Ā  that can’t be good. But it is just a part of it. But it was awesome. Yeah, my boots are soaked! I’m soaked! Yeah, buddy!

We actually came to a section where we thought,Ā Ā  “All right, it’s over.” Done. There weren’tĀ  any cars ahead of us, and so we were justĀ Ā  driving along like, “Ah. This is it. That wasĀ  great.” And then we realized uh-oh… Round two!Ā Ā

Round two is coming up. I don’t know if it’s evenĀ  ended because there’s more stopped traffic up here. Yeah. Ohhh! Oh, man. Oh, wow. All right, I think we madeĀ  it through. Like you said, you have toĀ Ā

Just keep going when you’re in the water. YouĀ  can’t just stop. I mean, when you’re going,Ā Ā  you’re pushing the water out of your way to aĀ  certain extent, right? But when you stop, all thatĀ Ā  water that you’re physically pushing out of yourĀ  way then comes back, and that’s when things canĀ Ā

Get a little bit more sketchy. Yeah, again, I wasĀ  just smiling and woohoo-ing, and Marisa is gigglingĀ Ā  in my ear. Oh man. Yeah. It wasĀ  a water ride. It was “Splish splash, we wereĀ Ā  taking a bath.” It was super, super fun. But myĀ  feet were just soaked… I’m changing gears,Ā Ā

Pressing on the brakes, and it’s just like…Ā  That’s I think everybody’s favorite feelingĀ Ā  in the world. No! Just soggy socks and boots. It’s justĀ  reminds you of pleasantries. At least that wasn’t a sewage line, but I amĀ  soaked. That was a lot, that was intense. Well,Ā Ā

There was, like… being on theĀ  open water and a jet ski going by.Ā Ā  Just nailed me. So after that massive water crossing,Ā  we were going along the highway, and we saw thisĀ Ā  place to stop, a rest area with a little cafe.Ā  And we’re like, “Uh, we have to stop.” Yeah,Ā Ā

We had just eaten not too long ago, but I was like,Ā  “I feel disgusting from the waist down.” You neededĀ Ā  to take off your boots. Oh, I sure did. I can just feelĀ  my toes swimming around like goldfish. Oh no! Here we go!

Oh my gosh! You dumped your boot out. I dumpedĀ  my boot out. And it was… it was gross. AĀ Ā  little goldfish was like… I was like, “Oh no!” It’sĀ  vacuum-sealed, it goes like… Oh! So gross.Ā Ā

Look at that. Oh, that’s a dry boot right there.Ā  I need a Hazmat sign. Ew! I don’t know howĀ Ā  he lived. I mean, my boots got wet on theĀ  inside, but they didn’t puddle up. Then again,Ā Ā

My feet are much higher than his. He was just,Ā  like, straight up in the river. But that restĀ Ā  stop was needed, and it was great for us toĀ  recharge and continue on to Kota Kinabalu. [Kota Kinabalu – Malaysia] Malaysia has Kuala Lumpur, which isĀ  the capital over in West Malaysia.Ā Ā

Yeah. KL. There’s KB, Kota Bharu, I think,Ā  and there’s KK, which is where we were headed,Ā Ā  Kota Kinabalu. And Kota means the place of,Ā  and Kinabalu is the big mountain of Borneo,Ā Ā  which happens to be very close to this big city.Ā  And so this is the Place of Kinabalu. Even thoughĀ Ā

Kinabalu is not there, just to be clear. That’sĀ  right. This is the place next to it. Yeah. It is on the coast, and asĀ  we came into Kota Kinabalu,Ā Ā  we realized how beautiful this city is.Ā  It’s very modern, it’s got big buildings,Ā Ā

Neon lights, shopping mall. It’s got a wholeĀ  mixture of cultures there, so you got your Ā Ā  Chinatown mixed in with your Malay areaĀ  mixed in with all the indigenous people. So cool. Yeah. We finally found our little hotel we wereĀ  staying at. And we were kind of in a busyĀ Ā

Part of town, right? And it’s a rental bike, andĀ  it’s a KTM. Theft is not rampant anywhere,Ā Ā  but I just wanted to be double tripleĀ  safe with everything. For sure. We didn’tĀ Ā  want to just leave it on the street.Ā  Yeah, and the guy said thatĀ Ā

He had these sliding doors and he said that we couldĀ  park it in the little hotel in the sectionĀ Ā  where it wasn’t being used for much. But… There wasĀ  no way to get it in there without lifting it up in.Ā Ā

Yeah, I sat there just kind of being a bigĀ  dummy. I mean, you could have gotten over thatĀ Ā  ledge if you had been able to turn the bike toĀ  face it. But because you were on the sidewalk,Ā Ā

There was no way to turn into it. And he sawĀ  me do it like three times, and he was like,Ā Ā  “It’s going to be just fine.” I wasĀ  like, “Okay, thank you. Thanks, because… yeah.” We walked up into our hotel, and it wasĀ  like a little Swiss chalet in the Alps. Okay,Ā Ā

Before I close the window because we’reĀ  going to have the air conditioner on,Ā Ā  look at how cute this window is with theĀ  view of the city. I loved it. It had theĀ Ā  little curtained shutters to the windowĀ  that would open up to the street below,Ā Ā

And it was all wood. It was really, reallyĀ  nice. It was exactly what we needed. It was onĀ Ā  the third floor, though. Yes. But toĀ  get the cute little shutter window view… You have to be high up. Very cute.

Good morning, everyone. So I am not feelingĀ  very good today. But little did we know thatĀ Ā  the rain from the previous couple of daysĀ  and getting drenched and being in the hotĀ Ā  sun made Marisa get pretty ill. Yes. ButĀ  that will all be in the next episode.

And we have some fun exciting news. The podcastĀ  edition of our episodes! So some of youĀ Ā  guys out there have said, “Wouldn’t it be greatĀ  if you had a podcast or audio version of yourĀ Ā  episodes so that I can listen to them onĀ  the road, on the motorcycle, in my car,Ā Ā

On a bike, doing dishes, whatever it is thatĀ  you’re doing.” Yeah. And we listened. We didĀ Ā  indeed. So you very well may be listening toĀ  this in that podcast version of our episode,Ā Ā  and so you are fairly aware that it exists. ButĀ  for the rest of everybody, we are now on iHeartĀ Ā

Radio. We’re on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts,Ā  all the things. You can find us everywhere. YouĀ Ā  just have to look up “Two Up and Overloaded,”Ā  and we’re there as a podcast. This is true. And if you are a Patreon, you get the podcastĀ  episodes a week early, just like you do theĀ Ā

YouTube videos. That’s right. As well as ourĀ  YouTube members. Yes! Yes, they get our videos aĀ Ā  week early as well. So we want to thank everybodyĀ  who supports us out there. We’re so glad to haveĀ Ā  you along on this journey. It’s been an amazingĀ  experience, and we can’t wait to show you allĀ Ā

The amazing things we’ve been up to. So if youĀ  liked this video, please give us a big thumbs upĀ Ā  and hit the Subscribe button below. Ding, ding.Ā  And we’ll be seeing you next time. Stay safe,Ā Ā  everybody. Bye! Peace. This was the longestĀ  water crossing that we had ever experienced.Ā Ā

There were a couple really long ones in theĀ  Baviaanskloof in South Africa. That’s true. Yeah. But this was the longest oneĀ  that we had experienced on a majorĀ Ā  road. This is a major highway, and it wasĀ  completely flooded out. This is definitelyĀ Ā

The longest flooded highway we’ve everĀ  been on, just to be clear. But yeah…

As we continued our journey riding a motorcycle through East Malaysia, we thought we had gotten through the worst of the rain in Brunei and Sarawak. But once we crossed into the Malaysian state of Sabah and headed to the big city of Kota Kinabalu, we realized that Mother Nature was not done with us yet.

Ahead of us was the Pan-Borneo Highway… except we could no longer see it. The entire road and surrounding region was covered in a thick layer of brown water, entirely flooded out. And not knowing how long this flooded road was going to be for, or more importantly, how deep it was, we just plowed right into it, hoping for the best… But also fearing the worst.

  8. Like your song, it rhymes and it is in my head now.šŸ˜‚
Flooded road is always fun for biker, but stay safe as road condition in east malaysia is really known for its potholes. U nvr know there is one when it is flooded.
Stay healthy guys, it is rainy season here in malaysia. U could get sick easily.

  9. Hi Tim and Marisa, living as an expat in mainland Malaysia and having traveled to Sabah last year, I do confirm that people here are incredibly kind and always interested in chatting with foreigners. While in Sabah, try to go to those places where you can see the big apes, the orang-utans. Cheers!

  10. The most scariest thing is if you hit a pothole while riding thru the flood. Anyway it is the best experience. I had a same experiences too riding thru flood in Sabah, Sarawak & Penang 😬😬😬. Stay safe guys & welcome to Sabah the place i use to live for 8 years before

  11. Hi dears, how are you doing ? Hows your wrist Marisa? Hopefully everything is going well to you, stay safe and enjoy the ride. Rainy season is quite challengin for cyclists.

  12. Sabah used to part of the Sultanate (kingdom) of Sulu under Sultan Kiram and it extended to Palawan, southern Mindanao (Tausug areas).
There are still separatists around there.
Like the U.S. flag it’s got 13 stripes for the 13 federalized states/sultanates.
