I Visited Japan’s Most Famous HOT SPRING Town with @Dogen
Welcome to Roto Japan today I’m in be City in OA prefecture in kushu I came all the way here with this guy right here it’s a huge fairy and um it’s got a direct like connection between Osaka and be City so um the reason why I came here
Is because I got an invitation from this guy a very local guy that actually quite known hey to see you again did you expect this the local guy hey everyone how was the fairy it was was great it’s great cuz um you know it’s overnight right and I
Arrived this morning and um that I expected with the high tie low tie like you kind of swing and all that no it was so quiet and I guess there’s like a reason behind it right yeah the quietness so um I’ve taken it actually a few times this is the one that goes
Between be and oaka and I I’ve taken the older version of this fairy now it has individual rooms and it’s got suits but it used to be kind of more of a uh a kind of a a mass thing where you could lay down in a room with maybe like
10 or 15 other people or you could get kind of like a smaller room but now there’s all these great rooms and it’s almost like a hotel at the sea now it was actually but uh I have so many things to show you in this beautiful
City so maybe we should just uh get going let’s go we don’t have time yeah let’s go all right today we are in beu in O prefecture on kushu island which is known for its top quality on sense when you arrive in beu first thing you notice
It’s a steam rising from the city but don’t worry it’s not on fire in fact all the steam is rising from the natural Hot Springs one of be’s most popular spots where you can get up close with some of the hot springs is known as the hell of
Beu these are seven different types of Hot Springs made for viewing rather than bathing from crocodile to a BL Pond hell you can explore these mysterious Hot Springs as many as you like but we’ll leave that for another time instead doggy will be showing around one of the
Oldest onand in beu show me one of the most surprising views over the city and then indulging some local food and for me take it away dogen what what’s going on there welcome to beer beer has the largest concentration of on sense of Japanese Hot Springs I just saw that yeah any
Town in Japan if you look in this this river right here yeah I mean you can see on the sides there’s all these locations where like this big pipe right here where there’s you know just hot water natural hot water just pumping out and you can probably smell something in the
Air yes I do yes I do what is this yeah it smells like eggs right yeah it’s eggs yeah yeah so this is the sulfur from it’s one of the minerals that’s inside of of the water naturally yeah beu has more than 300 Public onen public hot
Springs that 300 yeah 300 and there’s actually so many on sense so much hot water coursing around underneath Fu that on top of all the public Hot Springs many of the individual homes right my my own house included in the back has has an own yeah it’s really incredible but I mean there
Are so many on here there we should probably take this opportunity to go visit one of the famous ones why not I mean we’re here so I that that’s something want to ask you okay well I I know a special one so uh let’s go there right now okay let’s go there the
Special one looking forward to it ah so is this it looks like it wow first up on our tour beu is Tak Gaara onen the original building dates back to 1879 when the roof was made from bamboo tiles hence its name t meaning bamboo and gaar meaning tiled roof the prison building
Was renovated in 1938 and is one of the most recognizable ense and buildings in the city its gble roof is rare to find in Japan and inside has the showa ARA vibe to it its traditional structure is reminiscent of a shrine so many people visit not only
For the onent but also for its beautiful architecture Doan yeah can I tell you something please I am so insecure yeah it feels a little bit weird to wear one of these without anything on underneath underneath yeah exactly that’s you know but normally when you go to the bathroom
Public B you’re naked right but this time we in something but still we are like half naked yeah it’s kind of this weird in between Zone where it’s like if you’re completely naked it’s one thing cled it’s another thing but right now we’re in this kind of like yeah weird uncanny valley of
Nakedness anyway so now what you want to do now let’s get in okay it’s going to be the uh the sand sand sand all right that’s all right what’s going on here this is huge yeah it is can’t believe this is 100 years old this no no not it’s old and this is
Sunbath right you said yeah we’ve got some normal baths right here normal water on Sand Hot Springs but then there’s also a sand own sand which one we going to try we’re going to do the sand today wow I’m excited let’s go is here is
My first time in a stand yeah have you done it before no it’s heavy is it yeah real heavy I mean I don’t know you look like You’ be bu yeah I still war that also like B bath yeah bath Worm but it’s got this nice pressure to it that you don’t have
With water wow it’s heavy right it’s heavy oh it’s is a lot heavier than I thought right yeah it’s at this point I was questioning my life all my insecurities and what the I’m doing under all this sand it almost feels like you’re in like this vacuum seal yes you’re
Right true like you know getting all the air sucked out yeah exactly yeah because yeah again like in the normal on you’re getting the heat but you’re moving around the bath maybe going from the hot bath the cold bath or maybe the the the Sun or something like
This yeah outside bath yeah this it feels like you’re oh not handcuffed some people might like it so Doan yeah can I ask you how long this should last I think the guy when he was covering me I think that he said 15 minutes oh thank God it’s like imagine
This would be like being like an hour two you die exactly thank you you wouldn’t make it look feel like I’m going to have sand I know in my body for weeks I can’t really think of any occasion of sand being here for like a week sweating that what was happening
Yeah there I feel light how about you the lightest ever yeah the sand is so heavy but but then beyond that you sweat so much when you’re in there I probably lost like a pound of sweat so I just feel refreshed ready to go well I feel
Like I can fly so what’s next so next I’m going to show you some of the best scenery in be maybe the best scenery in allive O to prefecture oh my God so uh are you serious are you sure yeah okay let’s go let’s go let’s go be is
Situated on the east coast of kishu Island to the east you have beu Bay where you can find fishing ports and beauty beaches looking out to shok Island to the West just a short driveway you can escape into the mountains where dogen showed me one of the best viewers in
Beu so welcome to kijima K and kijima Plateau this is a an amusement park up in the mountains in OA prefecture just outside in the mountains right now exactly we’re up in the mountains the theme park appeared ex exactly it’s a pretty wild ride when you when you come
Up here because you take like a 15minute car ride right right after you’re already at the very top of Bea and then you go up into the mountains and suddenly there’s this there’s this enormous theme park all right let’s check it out all let’s check it Out okay so uh are you ready ready for the great view ready for what great view yes yes just this is just Ferris wheel uh normally uh what you can see right now is just a ferris wheel but there’s actually one special cart with uh kind
Of the best view of them all so that’s what I’m going to be taking you that sounds exciting yeah sure let’s get on it so uh just follow me okay face wild just slow and boring um there’s a Twist there twist what what what all right come on in what is
This what what is this no window no windows no walls so I hope you’re ready Yeah this is like you said this is the stunning view this might be must be like the best view of like beu for sure of like maybe o as whole it could be very well could be yeah um so what actually made you uh come to betu really I mean
There are so many places I mean so many people live in Tokyo Osaka and like you know just major places like you know apart from Chris bro you know started off from the very country side of Sak but anyway um what made you um come to
Beu so actually kind of the same reason that Chris ended up in Sendai and what I mean by that is I also came to Japan on the jet program okay you did I did right and um I studied abroad in Tokyo for one year when I was in university and after
Coming back from that I met a Japanese guy at my University the University of Washington uh back in the United States and I I told him that I was going to try and apply to the jet program and I talked to him I said I’ve been to Tokyo
Already for a year do you have any suggestions where I go and he said you should go to my hometown you should go to B oh and so I said okay and so uh I I wrote down bethu as like my number one choice and I unfortunately I didn’t get
Bethu but I did get this place called Bo and so during the 3 years that I was teaching English on the jet program I would pretty frequently come to be just to kind of either go in onen I kind of fell in love with it funnily enough at
The cram school that that friend I mentioned ago uh from beu where he went before going to University in the states I worked there for a year and then I worked at Apu for a year Apu of the University yeah yeah yeah rather rather
I worked at Apu for 3 and 1/2 years and then after that my kids were born and I I the timing was was right so I made the transition from Apu uh student recruitment to full-time content creator and I’ve just kind of well the rest is
History I guess is what they say beward I think it’s very International because of the University International University super International it’s also a tourist town yeah it’s true unlike the sides of the Town yes it’s like you see a lot of foreign phrases English every languages you know people are quite open
Tolerant you know it’s quite very nice exactly was yeah did you like it loved it l it it’s higher than it looks right yeah it is was it’s a lot higher than I thought yeah great yeah so after learning a little bit about dogen’s story and his
Love for beu it was time to get some grub as I mentioned before You’ be able to see an abundance of steam bellowing out from the sea Skyline for centuries people have been harnessing this natural steam to cook food known as jigoku Mushi or Hell steam crazy
Doesn’t sound too scary right it’s too scary is it yeah it’s actually so hot you can’t I can’t see anything with my glasses fuing up right now but we got to use glasses cuz it’s so hard 20 minutes okay let’s do it one popular area to experience jigoku
Mushi is Kwa District in some places you can either bring your own food or buy various plates from the vendor it’s a simple way of cooking that is additive free and a naturally mineral Rich steam is also set to bring out the true flavors of the food but be careful
Though that steam is H enough to burn your your eyebrows okay now it’s ready our Lunch is ready so your glasses your glasses let’s see let’s get ah look at that look at that look at that look at that looks delicious you sorry about that we got shrimp we got potato pot
Corn and paprika mushrooms sweet potatoes everything and even crabs yeah wow I don’t know if we’re going to be able to eat uh all this food by ourselves though it’s huge it’s huge dish you know so what I ended up doing is uh I used to work at a
University called uh Apu yeah so I thought it’d be fun if rather than just the two of us if we brought a couple of students and we all ate so uh why don’t you guys come on over hey come on in so do you mind if I ask
You guys to give a brief self- introduction sure sure can you go first okay hi my name is Adi and I am an AP student I am currently majoring in marketing and I’m a thir year student from India nice to meet you nice to meet
You nice to meet you nice to meet you so my name is Katherine I’m from Indonesia currently I’m a master student uh in master of business administration in Apu so nice to meet you oh my God oh my God so um apparently Apu has got like all these International students from many
Many countries right Z oh yeah I don’t know right now how many countries is it like 80ish I would say 80 or it’s really crazy I used to do student recruitment for for Apu so I’m pretty good at at pitching the university but the way that I always described it is rather than
Feeling like a traditional Japanese University or like an American University it almost feels like an airport like you’re walking around you’re hearing all these all these people from yeah yeah yeah all these different countries well wait let’s think first okay let’s let’s talk let’s talk let’s while we Talk so if you had to choose like one place if a foreign tourist comes to O where would you recommend CU today I I did the sandback for the first time that was quite an experience for that was I would recommend everyone to try but for
For your case what is it like I think for tourists generally I would say you Yin is really good because many ceries and there kind of like Christmas Market yeah this Mar in y yeah really I call it Christmas Market because the fbes and the building it’s
Really beautiful there mhm so for me one of the events that I would invite tourists to in beu is the beu Onan Festival on Festival yes it was one of my favorite festivals so because be is known for its on sense we do have one event that highlights onent being there
And so we just go around and splash water over each other and it is the Onan water that comes in from splash water yes like people to people like splashing each other yes pretty wow that’s wild water fight yeah yes the water fight yeah oh my God oh my God all right okay
That sounds like you know it sounds like something that I have to come back for definitely definitely is there anything else that you like to mention before closing the video yeah I think uh what we talk about about the places about the foot about activities in OA like we talk
About it briefly but if you want to know more about it uh you can watch explore OA Japan channel so it we have many activities there we go to many places try many fots so I think it will be great if you watch our videos there so
Wait a second so you are promoting your channel in my channel he you I should it’s great opportunity using your business what is the whole purpose of bringing the wom to PR the Channel all right okay okay all right so I’ll I’ll make sure to put the
The URL your link into my description box below all right okay so check it out all right so that’s it for the video did you have fun and I think we explore little bit of O and if you want to explore more check out the explore o
Japan all right and I’ll see you in next video all right see you guys thanks thanks that was great that was great
Today, I visited Beppu in Oita Prefecture, known for being one of Japan’s most famous hot spring towns. We’ll be visiting a sand hot spring, a secret spot with the best view of Beppu City, and finally, a meal all made from the steam of the hot springs! But the fun doesn’t end there!
We’ll be joined by Dogen, a local and expert of Beppu, who will give us the ins and outs of the hot spring haven AND, some local students from Ritsumeiikan Asia Pacific University, who will let us know why Beppu is the place to go for international students.

So how did you like Beppu? If you love hot springs and amazing food, you should definitely put Beppu on your next itinerary!
Thank you @Dogen for showing me around
Also, be sure to check out @ExploreOitaJapan for all things Beppu and Oita!

Nice. I was in Miyazaki for 10 days over new year and went to Oita on the way back to Kanto: I go regularly so will definitely pop in. (I am going this week actually….) Kirishima also has that methane smell. I will go to the onsen you suggest.
Getting out of the Sunamushi feels like you're reborn – went to one in Ibusuki. One more reason to go to Beppu, I guess… definitely shortlisted for my next Japan itinerary, I've got Kyushu in my sights anyway.
Hot springs and amazing food in Beppu? I am sold! That is great you invited some guests to try the delicious food! I can see myself trying the sand bath experience in the onsen. Great video Ryotaro!
It is so weird to hear Dogen speak mostly English haha.
But I love this video style showing off the town.
8:29 find what now?
Eigo jouzu!
Another banger of a video Ryotaro! Keep them coming!
Of course Ryotaro goes to the island furthest away from Chris Broad, after the "Windscreen incident" and he happens to choose the one town with cloudy vapors he can disappear into.
Coincidence?! I Think NOT! 😂
Ryotaro and Dogen what a fantastic collaboration, and a chance to see somewhere new in Japan
Beppu is def on my must visit list in Japan. I think the cruise to beppu is what I wanna do and I also want to visit fukuoka and kitakyushu. Volcanic sand bath is prob my number 1 thing I wanna do just like you guys did!!!
I always thought Beppu was super cool! I'd probably get a little overwhelmed by the sulfur tho
Awesome collaboration and love the location!
You GOT to go back to cover the onsen festival.
Beppu is within the top 5 places I want to visit in Japan, I'm always glad to learn more about it.
Very happy to see Dogen in this one too, he seems like such a good guy and the girls were lovely.
YE OLDE VENGEFUL SWINE!
Great collab with the Dogenator!! Nice!
That coaster looks amazing.
i really enjoyed this video with you and dogen! great to learn and see more of beppu
Brilliant but too short – I want to see a feature film with Ryotaro and Dogen teaming up to solve crimes…all committed by the mastermind Natsuki
No joke about burying Chris alive? I’m shocked lol
Can you take Rion ishida on that ferris wheel 😂
Man, what a happy day it is every time I see our beloved Rizotoro showing us yet another something he wants to share. Thank you man, keep up the good work. Cheers from Leeds.
Lol man if I'm going to Japan I do not want dorky gringo showing me around. Sorry only time I'm gonna just skip this one
Sucks I can't go in these with tattoos
Looks glorious
That sand onsen was very interesting, I've never seen something like that.
I hope this video makes enough $ to pay for Abroad In Japan's windshield.
Great stuff as always Ryotaro!
Enjoyed your vlog about Beppu.
Ryotaro was lucky it wasn't Chris who buried him in sand as he would have made sure he couldn't get out.
Ohno.. Chris found your location now, he is coming with his Kei car
You visit a theme park and don't go on the coaster? 😂 shame
Wow, I never knew Rosottero had his own channel, amazing.
Very nice, I was planning to visit Beppu on my next journey to Japan as well!
Chris got demoted?
Sunflower, sunflower, Taiyo ni mamorarete , IKOU!!
Oops, uploaded too early!
That's a weird map you show towards the start. I think it's distorted because you're viewing it slanted away from you.
Carry on!
8:26 fishing ports and beautiful bitches. Those are my two favorite things! xD
