【日本遺産】 和歌の浦・日本のアマルフィ雑賀崎/和歌山ドライブ
Hello everyone. In November 2023, I went to Wakanoura, a scenic spot surrounding Wakaura Bay in the southern part of Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture. The first place I visited was the Bandoko Garden.
It is said to be a place associated with Manyo, and was also used as a filming location for dramas such as “Mito Komon” and “The woman of science research institute.” It is a scenic spot with a long topography that juts out into the sea and offers a spectacular view. Let’s go!
Admission fee is 600 yen for adults and 300 yen for children. Parking fee is 500 yen. The pine trees are beautiful and well maintained. The stones around the pond are Kishu Aoishi (Blue stone). The beautiful scenery and the sounds of insects will soothe you. It’s a calm and beautiful sea.
Ah, you’ve come to the right place. Surrounded by the sea on three sides, the view is spectacular. The lawn area is also nice! This is the view from Wakaura Bay Observation Deck.
It is said to be a famous poem that was composed by Lord Fujiwara when Emperor Shomu visited Wakanoura during the Manyo period, seeing the fishing fire at Saiganoura.
The guardhouse garden was the naval defense watchhouse of the Kishu domain, and it is said that it was used to watch over black ships even at the end of the Edo period, when Perry arrived. It has become such a beautiful park now.
You can see the mountains of the Kii Peninsula, Jinoshima Island, and Okinoshima Island. What you can see right in front of you is Nakanoshima (Menajima), and what you can see next to it is Oshima (Oshimajima). I could also see the Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Wakayama Steel Works. “Can you see tomorrow?”
This rock is also Kishu blue stone. You can also see the Saikazaki sightseeing lighthouse. It seems OK to bring your dog and bring your own lunch. There’s also a bench, which is nice♪ Let’s go down the stairs here. Some people enjoyed fishing from the shore. The fish are dancing.
It might be nice to just spend the day in a daze while looking out at the ocean. I came to the Nadanohama Beach Observation Deck. There is also a private beach, so you can enjoy swimming in the summer! The sound of the waves is very soothing.
There is also a barbecue area that requires reservations. Having a barbecue while looking at this view would be the best! The next place I visited was Kishu Toshogu Shrine. Parking fee is 300 yen. If you present your parking ticket receipt at the admission reception, the admission fee for one person will be waived.
As you walk along the approach lined with lanterns, you will see a long set of very steep stairs in front of you! You can also visit here. There was also a gentle staircase. Samurai-zaka (108 steps),
It is said that as you climb up your earthly desires will be washed away, allowing you to pray with a clean mind. It may be a little scary to look directly below, but the view is absolutely stunning!
Admission fee is 300 yen for adults. If you show your parking receipt, you can get 1 person free of charge. It was built in 1621 by Tokugawa Yorinobu, the first lord of the Kishu domain, to enshrine his father, Tokugawa Ieyasu. The deities enshrined are Tokugawa Ieyasu and Tokugawa Yorinobu.
There is a worship hall and the main shrine in the back. From then on, photography was prohibited inside, but we were able to see the sculptures by Jingoro Hidari and the murals by Tanyu Kano.
Wakaura Bay can be seen from the tower gate, and the richly colored vermilion lacquering is said to be one of the most beautiful in Kansai and is eye-catching. The gate becomes a picture frame and looks like a painting!
Seven buildings, including the main shrine, are designated as important cultural properties, and it is also known as the “Nikko of Kansai.” On the way back, I will take the gentle slope. There are stairs and they are quite long. This was also a road that we should be careful about.
It is covered with trees and has a sacred atmosphere. I felt refreshed. Next we came to Tamatsushima Shrine, Shiogama Shrine, and Furobashi Bridge. This is Ashibe Bridge. This is Furo Bridge. This is an arch-shaped stone bridge built in 1851. The relief with a cloud motif is impressive.
Wakanoura has been designated as a Japanese heritage site as a treasure trove of spectacular scenery. Tamatsushima Shrine (free parking available) This is a shrine where the god of waka poetry is enshrined. It is said to have attracted the faith of many Manyo poets. There were many monuments of poetry within the precincts.
Also, the view is said to be very good if you go up the mountain at the back. The worship hall The roots of the Tsurumatsu (Tsurumatsu) tree, which is a natural monument The roots are amazing. The fern Otaniwatari (there are sporangia on the underside of the leaves) and
The wildflower Hotodokis were also blooming. There is also elegance in the wildness. Shiogama Shrine is right next to it. It is affectionately known as “Shiogama-san” by the locals. It is said to be the god of safe childbirth, childbearing, and eternal youth and longevity. excuse me for disturbing you. Is this a Wago pine?
Apparently, a fallen pine tree was regenerated. There is a shrine inside a rock cave. It was a quaint shrine located inside a naturally created cave. Let’s have lunch at “Wakaura Shokudo”! There is an affiliated parking lot within Wakaura Fishing Port. It’s on a hill, so the view looks good.
I’m looking forward to it! Wow, this building looks like something out of “Spirited Away.” It seems that a long-established restaurant with a long history has been renovated. Let’s go up to the second floor. It’s a holiday lunchtime so it’s very busy. You can see large lanterns and red lanterns from your seat.
It was so cute to see the cat too ♡ From the window over there, you can see a panoramic view of Wakaura Bay. Apparently dogs are allowed if you make a reservation. Ash-boshi Sanma set meal (¥1320)
Traditional ash-boshi made in Saikazaki. “Ashboshi” is a drying method that suppresses the deterioration of fat and concentrates the flavor. If you pay an additional charge of 320 yen, you can change to a shirasu bowl filled with plump shirasu. Ash-dried saury has little odor and is delicious. Kumano Beef Meat Soba (¥1070)
The sweet and spicy flavor of the soft Kumano beef and yuzu flavored soup will fill your body with deliciousness. WAKA SYOKU bowl (¥2170) Fresh seafood is so luxurious! Comes with sesame tofu and miso soup. It has plenty of whitebait and is definitely delicious!
The atmosphere was great and we enjoyed delicious local ingredients! Thank you for the meal. Next, I went to a cafe at Saikazaki Fishing Port. (Parking available) Delicious-looking cakes are lined up in the showcase ♡ Cake set (¥935) The sourness of pistachio and griot cherry is nice. Cake set (¥935)
Has a fragrant surface with a harmony of vanilla and chocolate cream. The tableware is vintage Noritake. There is also terrace seating. Counter seat. table seat. The interior is nice with sofa seats. It was delicious. Thank you for the meal! Finally, we came to see the scenery called “Japan’s Amalfi”.
The sunset view of the fishing port is also wonderful. It is said that the scenery of houses lined up on the slope facing the Saikazaki fishing port is reminiscent of Italy’s Amalfi Coast. It was a calm and beautiful sunset.
When I visited Wakanoura for the first time, its scenery has been described in poems since the Manyo era, and I was captivated by its unchanging beauty.I spent the day thinking about those days while feeling the history. I want to go out again in search of excitement and healing!
