HUNGARIAN Street Food Tour in Budapest – SPICY HALÁSZLÉ FISH SOUP + HUNGARIAN DESSERTS IN HUNGARY 🇭🇺

Ooh, look at the colour on this. Just so… Juicy. Mmm, mmm hmm. Mmm. What’s up, everyone! I’m Chris. We’ve got Steph behind the camera, and we’re Hungry Two Travel. We are here in Budapest, Hungary, to eat some local cuisine. Hungarian food is known for its use of paprika

And sour cream in a lot of its dishes, as well as being super comforting and hearty, which is perfect on this cold day today. Are you hungry? Because we are starving. Let’s get eating. We’re here at this very local restaurant to try two traditional Hungarian dishes. Cigánypecsenye and a Paprikás

So, Steph will be trying the paprikás, so we’ll put that aside for her. And I want to dig in to this Cigánypecsenye. So, Cigánypecsenye is referred to as gypsy steak, and what it is, we have a pork blade steak. Smells incredible. And they spice it with garlic and paprika.

And on top is smoked bacon. Look at that. Look at all that fat. And they leave the pork rinds on there as well. This just smells amazing. And it comes with a side of potatoes. Oh, look at all this garlic on there. It has such a strong garlic smell. Alright.

I can smell it from here! It’s nice and thin. You can see there. I love my garlic. Mmm. Super garlicky. Mmm, the pork is nice and tender. Really flavourful. The garlic and the taste of the paprika. That is some good pork. Wow. I want to try this smoked bacon here.

Ooh, the rind is really, tough. Oh, look at that. So fatty. And the rind, again, is still attached to there. And just so… Juicy. Mmm. That smoked bacon, nice smoky flavour. Mmm. The rind, is a bit crunchy, and a little bit chewy, too, though. But just so fatty and juicy.

You really have that smoked flavour. It’s really smoky, mmm. The fries here are so… big. They’re almost like potato wedges. Smoking hot. Mmm. It’s a nice side to the salty and meaty pork here, mmm. And we got to try, both pieces of pork together. Ultimate pork bite. Mmm.

The juices from the fat of the smoked bacon, with the garlicky paprika pork. The perfect combo, mmm. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious? Delicious. Delicious. Very delicious. Very! Very delicious. So delicious. Thank you. I love this gypsy steak. So porky. The dish I’m going to be trying is Paprikás Now, this is one of the most

Well known Hungarian dishes. It’s usually served with chicken, but we got it with Sertés, which is pork. You can see by the lovely red colour, it’s made with tomatoes, onion, garlic, sweet peppers, and paprika. Always served with this dollop of sour cream on the top. And usually on the side,

You have these Galuska, which are an egg noodle, egg dumpling. Oh, look at the colour on this. Mmmm. Ooh, that’s got a bit of a spice to it. Mmm, bit of a kick. I can really taste the tomato flavour and the paprika as well. And those little egg dumplings,

The egg noodles, have such a nice consistency. I love the shape of these little egg noodles, these egg dumplings. They’re all different shapes and sizes because they’re actually a dough that is coarsely shaved into boiling water. And that’s how they make the dumplings like this, so. Look at these guys. Mmm.

So nice and chewy. The consistency… It’s not like a pasta. It’s almost more similar to a gnocchi or something like that. But, they have a nice buttery flavour to them as well, ooh. Those are so good. I really like those. Let’s try some sour cream with it, and the pork there, too.

Look at that. Mmm. Ooh. Okay, the pork. Lovely and tender. The addition of the sour cream, makes it so nice and creamy. And there’s sour cream actually in the sauce, too. So overall, the paprikás, why it’s so popular and loved too, is that creaminess to it, makes it so rich. Mmm.

That, is a hearty comfort dish. Oh, man. Those noodles, though! Love these little galuska. The very sweet owner just brought us over a glass of a traditional Hungarian rose drink, he said, so. Cheers. Ooh. It’s nice. It’s fizzy, sweet. Definitely has a rose, almost a cherry flavour to it.

Look at the colour of that. How kind of him to allow us to try this. This is really tasty, and definitely goes well, with what’s left of our meal here. Can we really gobbled this down. And the owner just also brought us some lovely Hungarian pancakes. Looks like you sprinkled them

With powdered sugar Oh yeah. They’re super thin, almost like a crepe. But, it looks like a pancake there. Mmm hmm. Nice and sweet, mmm. But, the thin pancake, is really nice. It’s not too thick. Nice and actually plain. Just the powdered sugar. Mmm. Ooh, actually… ooh. There’s a layer… Oh, wow!

Of jam in there. It’s strawberry jam. So, the first few bites I had, obviously were just the corners of the pancake, but, this is filled with strawberry jam. Mmm. That is amazing, wow. The hospitality here has been so top notch. This is delicious, wow.

We’re on Castle Hill now, which was founded in the 13th century, and consisted of just a fort and a castle. But since then, houses, buildings, and church have built up since the medieval period. Currently, all the buildings you see were built in the 18th century in a Baroque style.

And they are just gorgeous. It is such a beautiful area of the city to go for a walk and explore, and see some history Behind me is Fisherman’s Bastion, built in the 20th century. It comprises seven towers, which represent the seven tribes that founded the city. Behold the Túró Rudi.

These are a super popular Hungarian snack, and they are a curd snack. So, it is made with Túró, which is a curd cheese, and then it is smothered in dark chocolate. Look at this guy. And this brand, with the red dot is the most popular

One that you just have to try when you’re here. But this is hefty. This is a heavy guy. Look at this. It’s like a little log. It is, a little bar, a little log. I think that’s what Rudi means, so, makes sense. Mmm. Oh, my gosh. Look at this. That is so good.

The flavour, of the curd, just a hint of sourness, but sweet as well. And with the nice, thin layer of dark chocolate around it. And the texture inside, it’s really creamy, but, it almost reminds me of something that would have, like, coconut in it or something like that, in terms of the texture.

I can see why Hungarians like this. This is so good. Mmm. Mmm… just really nice, and mushy, and smooth, and velvety, ooh. And the crunch on that chocolate. Mmm. And these are in the fridge. So, this is actually a cold snack. Mmm. So good. I love this What a unique snack.

Look at this guy. So creamy and chocolaty. That chocolate is thick! It is, actually. Mmm. These little guys are so good. Túró Rudi… you’re my new best friend. Thank you. Thank you. Let’s go. Oh man, look at these cakes. We’re here at István Cukrászd, which is right in the centre,

In the heart of Budapest, to try some very traditional Hungarian desserts. The first is Dobos Torte, and Krémes. I’m going to keep this one for myself, and this will be for Chris. So this is Krémes, which is a custard slice of vanilla custard in between a puff pastry.

And can we all just take a moment here, please, to appreciate how thick this custard slice is. I mean, look at this. I’m super excited. Let’s just dig right in Oh, my gosh, look at this. I don’t know how to even go about this. Look at the cream in this.

That is a lot of cream. Mmm. That is so creamy. You can really taste the vanilla of it. Very different than other custard pastries, that are similar to this, kind of like, a Napoleon or something like that. This custard is much lighter, more creamier, almost the consistency of a whipped cream.

You can just see there how light and kind of, airy, the custard is. It really is more of a cream Ooh. Mmmm. Ooh. Oh, my gosh. I love anything creamy like this. And this is insane. Forget the fork, eh… I don’t know.

I really don’t know what the best way to eat this is. Always with your hands. Mmm, mmm hmm. That is creamy. Mmm. Ooh, so good. The pastry actually, on the top and bottom, really, like, super thin. Quite soft. Not crazy flaky, but, ooh. This is just pretty much cream

In between two thin slices of pastry. This is amazing. Mmm, mmm hmm. So our second lovely cake here is called Dobos Torte. And what it is, it’s a layered sponge cake. And in between the sponge cake is chocolate buttercream, and the signature caramel brittle, on the top. That’s kind of hard.

And, it looks like we’ve got peanuts on the back as well. Ooh, this looks sweet and delicious. Let’s try and take a slice here. Oh, no. This brittle is way too hard to cut. So, I think we’re just going to have to… Take it off. Get a… Ooh.

It’s not as soft as I thought it was going to be, to be honest. Look at that. You can see all the layers of the sponge cake and the chocolate buttercream there. And we have the caramel brittle here, so. Mmm. Mmm. Wow! That caramel brittle. Super crunchy, mmm. But, that chocolate buttercream, ooh.

Nice and soft. The sponge cake is actually a little firm. Somewhere between a meringue and a sponge cake, but, mmm. So chocolaty and rich. And, the caramel brittle. Mmm. Adds, a nice caramel sweetness to the cake as well, mmm. I definitely want to try some of this peanut here. My favourite part

Okay, that bite, was all buttercream and peanuts. I didn’t get any cake there. It was amazing. Lucky you. A little history behind this Dobos Torte. It was created in the 1880s by József Dobos. And, after a lot of failed attempts by his competitors to replicate this delicious torte,

He actually released his recipe to be public. And now it is super popular in all of the bakeries here in the country. And we can see why, because it is so delicious. But, let’s just add a little bit of the Krémes… To the torte. An ultimate… Torte bite. Mmm. This is delicious torte.

We’re here at this restaurant for this very special soup called Halászlé, and we’ve been told this is an extremely, extremely spicy Hungarian soup. It is bubbling. It is red. And you can see here, how it comes in this nice little cauldron, a personalized cauldron with the fire underneath, keeping it warm,

And keeping it boiled. So, what how this is, it actually translates to fisherman’s soup. Traditionally, it contains carp. You can also get Halászlé with catfish, I believe. The fish we got is carp. Big chunks of the fish there. And you can see the red colour there.

And it’s just made with hot paprika and hot peppers. So, that’s what’s going to give it that signature spicy flavor. So, let’s spoon us some Halászlé soup here. There’s a lot of fish in here, too. Huge chunks of the fish, The carp, with the skin on as well.

You can see, there’s a lot of the little pieces of the fish as well. And, I think the roe as well, because I could see little eggs in there. Such a spicy red colour, though. Look at that. And with the soup, we got a nice loaf of bread to go with it.

And some extra spicy, hot paprika if we want it to be even more spicy. But, maybe we’ll just try it to see how spicy it is first. Got a little bit of flame left. I mean, it was just boiling right here, so… That’s going to be hot.

I’m sure this is going to be hot. No, no, it’s okay. Mmm. The carp is super meaty, has a very subtle fish flavour, but, really nice carp, actually. And there are chunks of the fish roe in there as well. So, it’s got a bit of the crunch from the fish roe.

To be honest, it is not spicy at all. There’s no spice. It has just a nice, almost sweet paprika flavour. More than a spicy, actually. Yeah. It’s not spicy. Maybe we have to add the hot paprika to it. Mix that hot paprika in. I was expecting it to be super spicy

Because of the red color, but. Still, super, super red. Ooh! Yeah, that is where the spicy comes from. That is spicy soup now, mmm. The spice brings out the flavour of the carp, actually. My favourite part about the soup has to be the fish roe.

There’s actually a ton of the roe in the soup. So, every single spoon that I take and taste really has a strong fish roe taste to it. I actually love this soup. Mmm. Ooh, whoa. That is spicy there. Definitely need to add that hot paprika in to make it flavour pop, for sure.

But… this is a delicious soup. Mmm, mmm. Can’t forget. About our bread as well. Look at that, just soaks it, right up there. I love how there’s just so much fish roe in this. Mmm. A nice, fish taste to the bread, mmm. Almost like a fish sandwich, mmm. Soaks it up perfectly.

So, traditionally, Halászlé was prepared by fishermen here in Hungary, as well as their families. And that’s how it got its name. Fisherman’s Soup. It is so meaty, this carp, and you got the nice skin still on there. So, you get the nice fatty oils from the fish skin there.

But again, big, huge chunks of the carp There’s actually so much soup and fish in this pot here. And I love how they serve it to you in this very traditional way, in this personalized cauldron, right at the table here. Ooh. I love the use of paprika in all of the Hungarian food.

It’s such a versatile spice having hot paprika, sweet paprika. And, the hot paprika definitely makes this soup what it is. A definite recommendation if you’re ever in Hungary and in Budapest, and definitely try it like this, in the traditional way in this cauldron. Ooh. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Ooh, look at that. Mmm.

I love this Halászlé soup. Oh, yeah. That’s good. Alright everyone, that does it for our Hungarian food tour today. Thank you so much for watching If you enjoyed the video, give it a LIKE, give it a thumbs up. Don’t forget to hit the bell icon below to get notified

  1. Hello there! 😊

Hearing "paprika" brings me memories of a lot of things and anong them is a really fun children's show. Don't feel blue, but I won't give you clues on what it is. 😂

I guess this vid will remind me of Hungarian food too hence on. Thanks for introducing me to that. ✨️🧡

All of the items you've tried look tasty. I think those that captured my attention are the ones from the very beginning, the egg dumpling/pasta and pork/bacon dish. The carp/catfish soup also looks so interesting. I do not know many places and dishes that use catfish. It's nice to learn more about how it is prepared and enjoyed in other cuisines.

I feel like having a tea or coffee with all the chocolate snacks and desserts you had. But I am sure that the rose colored drink should not be missed too.

The places you featured all looked pretty. I also appreciate the bits of info and sharing the names of the dishes in text. Nicely done you two. See you next meal. ✨️🫰🏻😊

  2. Oh my goodness you guys get around fast!?? I love how excited u are eating. Better than mark weins any day. Hhh (did i just swear?)

  3. Budapest looks like a lovely, historical city ! We enjoyed learning about the tasty, delicious food that you sampled while there, especially those yummy pastries 👍😋!

  4. Good morning
can I take some images (without sound) of your video from 7min to 8min please? I currently work in BTS in Paris and my situation is as follows: I have to make a video to promote Budapest

  5. Wow, what an amazing video! Loved how you showed such traditional, local Hungarian foods. Those galuska with the paprikas was probably my favourite, it looked so comforting. Hungarian food looks soooo good, putting this on my list of places to visit for sure!

  6. Nice to see some foodie eating an actually nice quality "Halászlé", it uses a lot uf spices, but not always hot by itself. It usualy comes with a selection or at least one type of hot paprika, usually green long pointy, or small red, maybe "Erős Pista" as some like it. I see poor quality in many videos. Ofc serving like that was sime extra fancy magic.

  7. What the drink was is szörp. Wich is fruit syrup made from fruit juice and sugar usually made from raspberry but it can be any fruit. Then the syrup is diluted usually a 1:5 or 1:7 ratio with soda (carbonated mineral water). It is must in many homes but restaurants don't serve it so it is quiet an unknown thing to foreigners. You can found a lot of types of sörp in any grocery stores.

In the 1000 years history of hungary nobody ever figured out how to eat a krémes nicely.

  8. Bacon fried in this way is called rooster's comb.
We usually don't eat the baked skin.

The medieval Buda castle was completely destroyed in the wars of the Turkish era (it was recaptured in 1668). Hence the uniform baroque style. Later styles were built into this.

"Túró Rudi" exists in several versions, with several manufacturers. The "Piros Pöttyös" is the real thing! You liked it, but some people don't it.
The friend here is the bear cheese. The slogan of the advertisement, my friend, is bear cheese. Don't worry, it's not made from bear milk, it's just that there's a bear on the packaging. The name is Medvesajt.( Medve = bear ,sajt= cheese)

The whipped cream version of Krémes is the French cream. There is even a layer of whipped cream between the two sheets of dough.
I usually eat it by eating the top sheet of pasta first.
The real story of the Dobos torta is different. József Dobos was a businessman, not a confectioner. The name Dobos has become a brand. He distributed the predecessor of this cookie. He made the recipe public, but only after his death. Today's cake is a little different from back then.

There are many versions of halászlé. According to the makers (of course, lol ), only their own is the only good, the original.
It's a traditional Christmas meal anyway.

Paprika cream is the classic Erős Pista ( Strong Stevie). This is raw ground hot pepper mixed with salt. The name of the first cream to be sold was Erős Pista.
It is still on the market today. An even spicier version is Bivaly Pista. Édes Anna ( Sweet Ann) , on the other hand, doesn't bite.

  9. you should have tried the Krémes in the castle district at the Ruszwurm pastry shop, it's the real deal. It was Queen Sissi's favourite place and sweet, founded in 1827.
