Staying at Japan’s Onsen Ryokan with an Open-air Bath with a Spectacular View | Fukusen Niigata

This time, I’m staying at a hot spring inn in Niigata Prefecture. Please enjoy watching. Hello everyone, it’s been a while! This time, I’m visiting a hot spring inn in Niigata Prefecture called “Ekaki no Yado Fukusen.” First, I will have lunch in Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture, and then head to the hot spring inn.

First, I’m heading to “Kuratechaya.” “Kuratechaya” is a famous udon restaurant. The restaurant, built in 1876, was relocated here in 1976. It’s quite spacious inside, retaining the ambiance of the old house. Udon is the basic menu item here. This time, I ordered the recommended “Kenchin Udon” for 1,220 yen ($8.5).

It’s a miso soup with ingredients like cabbage, carrot, leek, burdock, potato, konnyaku, fried tofu, and tofu. I’ll try the ingredients first. The ingredients are large, but they’re flavorful and delicious. Now, I’ll try the udon. It’s thick with a firm texture and delicious! It goes really well with the miso soup.

I also ordered horse sashimi 1,500yen/$10.55, which is famous here. You dip it in soy sauce mixed with spicy miso. Very delicious. Even though it’s a weekday, the place was full by lunchtime. It’s really delicious udon, so please come and try it if you have a chance. There’s still time before check-in, so

I’ll do a bit of sightseeing. Here, handmade glass products from around the world are collected and displayed. There are expensive glass items costing several hundred thousand yen, as well as glasses that you can buy for around 1,000 yen. Wow! A huge diamond. This is a chaton made by Swarovski of Australia.

It’s the second largest in the world. Not only glass products, but also natural stones are on display. This one, produced in China, is priced at 2,750,000 yen ($19,300)😨. There are also stones that have been sold, like this one for 1,650,000 yen ($11,600). Now, I’ll go up to the second floor.

The second floor sells slightly more expensive glasses and such. The sake glasses are lovely. Satsuma Kiriko. Drinking sake from these would probably taste even better. The Giudecca Canal in Venice. This is also made of glass. Now, I’m heading to the hot spring inn! But first, I’m going to buy some sake!

Kirinzan Shuzo is a brewery established in 1843 and is a representative sake producer in Niigata. With the belief that “sake should be dry,” most of their sake is dry. Kirinzan’s sake can be purchased at most supermarkets in Niigata, but here, you can buy sake that’s only available at specific liquor stores.

Having bought the sake, let’s go to the hot spring inn! [Agano River] A first-class river that originates in Fukushima Prefecture, flows through Niigata Prefecture, and into the Sea of Japan. The hot spring inn is located very close to Kirinzan Shuzo. It’s just a one-minute drive. I’ve arrived.

Fukusen is a long-established inn with over 80 years of history. Its exterior and entrance were renovated in 2010. It has an elegant and serene atmosphere. The front desk. I’m being guided to my room. Fukusen has 11 regular rooms and 4 rooms with open-air baths.

This time, I’m staying in a room with an open-air bath called “Yuko.” Let’s start by looking at the main room! The main room is a 10-tatami mat Japanese-style room. From the large windows, I can view the Agano River. There are ducks there👋. I’ll introduce the inside of the room. TV. Safe.

Wi-Fi ID and password. When I open the drawer, there’s a flashlight, guide to the inn, and a telephone inside. This is… a wooden puzzle. A puzzle where you rearrange wooden pieces to form shapes. There’s a sketchbook. Guests can freely draw pictures in it. Pokémon? Cute, haha. Let’s continue looking around.

A stove and humidifier. Chair. Remote controls for the TV and air conditioner. A pot filled with water. Welcome snacks. Inside the chest of drawers, there are futons. Next is the bedroom. There are two single beds in a room about four tatami mats in size. Mirror. There’s also an air conditioner installed.

Next is the washroom. Hand soap, tissues, skin lotion. Hair dryer. Razor, comb, hand towels. Bath towels. Bathrobes. LED lantern. It’s quite bright. Next door, there’s a toilet with a washlet. Through this door, you can go to the open-air bath in the room. I’ll introduce the open-air bath later.

Now, I’ll change into a yukata and go to the public bath♨. Inside the inn, there are both a public bath and an open-air bath, each in different locations. First, I’ll go to the open-air bath. Observation open-air bath.

The one in the front is for men, and the one in the back is for women. The spring quality is sodium chloride and sulfur salt spring (neutral hypotonic hot spring), effective for neuralgia, muscle pain, etc. The spring temperature is a lukewarm 33.5 degrees, so it’s heated, but it warms you to the core.

Right in front is the Agano River. I can enjoy a scenic view like something out of a painting. It’s a bit cold in winter, but I can also take a shower. Next, let’s go to the public bath. The men’s and women’s baths are separate.

The spring quality is the same as the open-air bath. The water temperature is a bit cooler than in the open-air bath. Finally, I’ll introduce the bath in my room. I can go outside through the door in the washroom. I can enter the hot spring without leaving my room.

And I can also enjoy a great view of the Agano River. A private hot spring and a beautiful view… It’s the best. A treat after the bath. I’ll drink the Kirinzan sake I bought on my way here. Kirinzan Extra Dry, 1,115 yen ($7.8). It’s the driest sake of Kirinzan.

With an alcohol content of 15%, it’s delicious both chilled and warmed. It has almost no sweetness, true to its name as super dry. I love dry sake, so I really like this one. Next is Kirinzan Nishiki no Yumegokochi, 3,300 yen ($23). This sake is sold for a limited time.

It’s made with 100% “Takane Nishiki” rice. It is firm and dry, but slightly thickened and easy to drink. The extra dry sake was delicious, but personally, this one wins for me. I’ll have dinner in my room. Appetizers and simmered cod roe. Guess what this is? It was an egg. Sashimi. Scallop sashimi.

Fresh and delicious. Steamed in a pot. I’ll squeeze sudachi and drink it. It’s a soup, not sake. The flavor of the broth, matsutake mushrooms, and the scent of sudachi spread. Niigata wagyu shabu-shabu. Eaten with soy milk. It smells good. The sauce is ponzu. Soft and delicious! It warms up the body.

Finally, Aga rice Koshihikari and miso soup. Everything was delicious, and the quality of the food was high. I’m completely satisfied! I think I’ll take a bath before going to bed. All I hear are the sounds of the river and the hot water… The night atmosphere is also the best. Time passes slowly.

It’s time to go to bed. There are beds, but You can also prepare futons to sleep. Today was a good day. Good night. It’s time for breakfast. The breakfast is also carefully prepared for each dish. Yudofu (hot tofu). It seems like it will warm up the body.

Grilled salted salmon and tamagoyaki (Japanese omelet) are added. It’s a luxurious menu. There’s also rice and miso soup. The food at this inn is really delicious. The hot springs, scenery, food, and service, I was satisfied with everything! It’s time to check out. The cost for this stay for two adults was 61,600 yen.

That’s all for this time! Did you enjoy it? Let’s meet again on the next journey. Thank you for watching!

  3. First of all, I wish you a happy new year. It was also a great trip, a great start to the year. I really like that you always suggest something interesting to see, a good restaurant. The place where you were now was truly picturesque. But something is missing now: fish cooked in hot sake :). I wish you good health and good travels in 2024.
