Matsumoto Visit松本行きました!: Part 1 samurai armor dressing Get ready with me! 甲冑着付け tutorial

Hi everyone this is Jess the other day I went to matumoto Castle which is located in Nago prefecta Japan I rented some armor over in masoto City through hanich kimono rento and I wore jikatabi which are like Tabby socks but they’re got rubber on the bottom I wash these in the

Washing machine and they’re okay to wear on tatami the staff said to put them on stand up on the tatami here and it was the first time to be dressed by two people at once which was really cool underneath I wore a type of someware it looked like someware which is just like

Trousers and a kind of kimono top at Han kichi kimono rental they have an armor rental service so you can go they will dress you and you can can wear your armor Outdoors which I think is really wonderful next they put on at there which are shin

Protection I was yeah I was getting pretty excited by this time uh next is high which is for your upper legs so they put the hyra there on yeah super happy as you can see Uh next is C so these are like gauntlets and I have a little bit of an issue with gauntlets because usually my arms are very long and my own arm are at home I have them extended from the shoulder so that they’re nice and uh long for my

Arms the stuff were very thorough and very kind to me and and they made sure I was comfortable and we were having fun and talking and the room was very warm um and they played music as we got dressed which is really nice uh as you

Can see they’ve put both the C on now and the next thing that will go on is door so the door is usually you can if you buy yourself you can sit down uh to put it on but since I had two people uh I stood up so that the camera could get

A good view of me putting the door on and it’s me holding Sashi so I have this white kind of obie and it’s just W Obi so it goes over the top of the um door she’s just fastening the side um of the door there and I’m twisting the Sashi

And I put it around my body like it OB be but what you do is you tuck it up under underneath one part of the door that connects to which is that skirt part at the front and it takes all the weight of your shoulders so it makes

Wearing arm a lot easier and then sort this set of K has sod which are like shoulder protection Um so that’s that’s me without the cabor and it’s a really beautiful set of armor I think so I’m having a little pause for the camera getting more and more excited next is cub and that is the helmet and they got me to sit down

Is worn by Otani sh sh Otani the famous baseball player so it’s got the same shishi lion in the front and it’s made by m Coral which is the same company that makes all the armor and they’re based in kagoshima so I was done and I was out on the street walking towards

Super happy walking towards mamoto castle and there’s me crossing the road kind of like hoping no one’s going to freak out or but I did get some smiles and some Stars which was was really sweet I put my W on as you can see I

Have my straw sandals on top of myab and I have I so I have my sword and here’s me walking towards the castle and I thought I would just pretend like I live here because you know being a samur always say I sh which is welcome like as if I live

Here anyway thanks for watching the video it was a wonderful day coming up and part two I’m meeting somebody very special who I think a lot of people will know so please stay tuned for that

Get dressed in armour with me in Matsumoto City松本市にて甲冑に変身⚡
short video on my IG @jessintokyo

I took my first trip to Matsumoto in Nagano. I booked armour rental via a Kimono Rental shop called Hanakomichi.初めて長野県松本市訪れました。せっかくお城も遊びに行くので甲冑をレンタルして参りました。花子みち着物レンタルお世話になりました。

i got dressed in the following order:

1.Jikatabi 地下足袋 tabi shoes (not socks) for outdoor wear. 自宅クリーニング済み畳ではいて大丈夫でした(*These had been machine washed and the staff said to please wear them on the tatami👍️)

2. samue作務衣 traditional top and bottom set used by crafts people but also good for lightweight garments under armour.作務衣が軽くて着やすかった。

3.suneate臑当:shin armour

4.haidate 佩楯:thigh guards

5.kote 籠手:gauntlet/sleeves

6.dou 胴: cuirass

7.sarashi uwaobi:サラシうわ帯:outer obi made of non slip fabric.

8.sode 袖: shoulder armour

9.kabuto 兜: helmet this kabuto is based on on the one that the famous baseball player Shohei Ohtani wears.

The maedate (helmet emblem) is a shishi 獅子 or lion thought of as a talisman to ward off evil spirits 前立が邪気を払う魔除けの意味合いと言ってます。

After getting ready, I put on waraji 草鞋 or straw sandals and put an uchigatana 打刀 through my sarashi obi and then made my way to Matsumoto Castle.

Please stay tuned as I meet Matt Okuhara san (Gun Samurai)and visit the inside of Matsumoto Castle.

  1. This was very interesting, there are always a few parts that I know little or nothing about, and this was no different. I did not know about the sarashi uwaobi, and it would never have occurred me that it takes some of the weight of the armour from the shoulders. From the waist down it is very much like ice hockey padding. While from waist up it's more like Canadian or American football padding. Looking very impressive as you strolled to your Jo, as a true Daimyo would.

  2. Hi Jessica.

Thank you for the insights you share when making your videos, the details (those small cogs without which the big cogs don't function) make all the difference. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and good vibes from London.

  3. Ah very interesting to see the actual process! I remember an episode of begin japanology where the host was in the Sendai area if I remember correctly and they had visited an armor manufacturing company.

  4. Wow! Very nice video! It's nice to see the whole process explained as well. Haha… 3:15 were you setting up your ponytail as a Chonmage?!?! 😂

  5. You had me at 'armour rental service' 🙂 This was really interesting seeing the process and complexity of the dress and the clever use of the sarashi uwaobi. Interestingly, there was a rumour that Shohei Ohtani was going to be traded to Toronto and that fell through today. 🙂

  6. 20㎏位でしょうから、結構重たそうですね。あの甲冑だと遠くからの弓矢は防げそうですが、勢い良く槍を繰り出されると貫通しそうです。

  7. Wow, you look like these female samurai. <Female Samurai Warriors Immortalized in 19th Century Japanese Photos>

  8. Nice video Jess! Yeah that's all really cool. Being dressed for battle by 2 people, in such ornate armour. It's like they tried to balance the horror of war with beauty and control.

  9. What is the armour in the shoulders made of? Can stand a Katana stroke? Thank you. 🐱🐱🐱
