Seriously Unexpected First Impressions of Malaysia 🇲🇾
Watch out, Watch out, Watch out!! A motorbike just stopped in the road because he dropped his shoe!! After driving around the world in our UK camper van for the past 4 years, it’s not surprising that we miss our family and friends.
So it was lovely to have our niece Molly fly out and visit us for a couple of weeks whilst we waited for Trudy to arrive. This is Molly my niece! This is Chris my uncle! After an interesting experience collecting Trudy from the shipping port, Plan of action! They’re stacking pallets!
We dropped Molly off at the airport said our goodbyes and we’re excited and ready to start our Malaysian van life adventures. Live with no excuses, and travel with no regrets, Oscar Wild Good morning, welcome to Kuala Lumpur here in Malaysia, you’ll notice we’re not in Trudy!
And that’s because whilst we’ve been waiting for Trudy to arrive and getting her ready, we’ve been staying at this flat here right in the heart of KL. This morning is an exciting day! Trudy has parked right over there, you can see her in between the trees at the polo club!
Kuala Lumpur has a polo club, and it’s my friend Natasha and Peter who work there, and this is their flat that they very kindly let us stay in, but this morning we’re going to go and be picking Trudy up,
Because we’re taking her to a mechanic to get an oil change to get her ready to hit the road tomorrow. Good morning Marianne, good morning! Well it’s a little bit warm when you come out in Malaysia isn’t it ? it’s warm, it’s bright, and it’s steamy! It’s a beautiful day though.
Walking to the Polo Club, it felt surreal that Trudy had arrived in her 22nd country on her around the world challenge! We’re actually over halfway now, what an amazing thought! There she is, just parked behind in the wall! And this is where she’s been parked the Kuala Lumpur Polo Club, looked after by the security guards!
Good morning ! she’s doing good! Reunited, ready for another road trip! The paint work I sprayed before we left Korea has held up pretty good, yeah considering how bad it was. On the last video you can see the dents here from where she was lifted leaving Korea,
And the other side I think we’ll probably have to get her repaired, let’s have a look …. yeah this bit’s really quite bad here where they’ve damaged the sill here, and actually put a hole in it and broken a bit off, so we’ll have to get this repaired, after shipping from Korea.
After sharing that shipping experience with you, we’ve had literally hundreds of messages saying that we should receive some kind of compensation, so here’s a quick update: We contacted Mr Youn and told him that we wanted to finish this chapter of our adventures with a positive outcome, he came back to us saying:
I talked with warehouse, pic said they lift your car as your instructions, they said you pointed the place where they lift it’s a shame they didn’t listen to us, but according to Mr Youn they followed our instructions ….. “this one, this one, No no no no – Here here !
Why are you saying no? Because he’s putting it on the lip! I reminded him that I did film the whole experience, and he said he would come back to me, that was 2 weeks ago, and we still haven’t heard anything.
We paid him as the shipping agent, so as far as we’re concerned it’s his responsibility to ensure the safe handling of our vehicle, after all he booked the handlers! Many of you have asked us for his company details so we’ve added them into the description below,
Hopefully we’ll be able to stop other overlanders having a similar experience, and we’ll give you an update in a future video, but here she is ……. Trudy we got a little bit to get her ready for the road again, for tomorrow, but all is good!
Can I point out she’s a cat magnet! Look in front of the van!! Two cats coming to say hello already this morning! Right let’s go go and get Trudy and oil change, I think that cat wants to live with us, it is just staring at us!
Thank you, we’ll be back in about 2 hours, security guards at the polo Club have been keeping an eye on Trudy for us while we for while we’ve been in the flat, and it’s super super nice, so Peter and Natasha, thank you and everyone at the polo club for letting us park there,
Because where we’re staying we couldn’t get Trudy into the apartment car park because Trudy is too tall. Okay Simon’s garage just on the corner here. So there you go, this is the garage which Peter uses, just around the corner from the apartment.
Okay so the plan is we’re going to leave Trudy here and go and get some breakfast, they’re going to do an oil change just top up the coolant, and just get her ready for the next leg of the adventure,
In fact we’re still trying to plan a possible route to drive home, but we’ll update you as soon as we manage to finalise a plan. Okay, so that’s amazing Simon’s going to give Trudy a full check up, check the brake pads, change the oil,
Top up the coolant and just do all those things we need to do before we hit the road again, and in the meantime we’re going to go and have breakfast, and take you to the place that we’ve normally been having breakfast every morning,
And going and get some Roti and Curry for breakfast which is a Malaysian favourite of ours. No we’re not going to dunkin donuts! Good morning, so this is our breakfast haunt this is where we’ve been having breakfast every morning whilst we’ve been here, they also do a lovely a lovely selection of of hot food,
Good local food and it’s open 24 hours a day which is amazing! That is a skill that is something I want to learn you see they they take it out look how easy he makes that look….. Then you come set out,
I love it – you have got banana trees growing next to the side of the road, under the flyover, it’s just A la natural! it’s a real local place, it gets absolutely packed pretty well 24 hours a day! How good does that look cooked roti, it comes with three different types of Curry,
A fish one, a spicy one, a dhal one, the perfect Malayan breakfast! We’re just heading back to Simon’s garage because he messaged to say your brake pads are low, we need new brake pads, so we got those in the van, and your brake fluid probably needs to replacing,
And so it’s good he’s giving it a good check, he has topped the coolant up, so yeah if we can get all the brakes and everything changed as well now, they’ll see us back all the way to the UK hopefully, oh there she is ! She’s all jacked up!
Simon had given Trudy a good checkup and said that the rear brake discs were very worn out, She’s done a lot of miles, We also to discuss the brake fluid and decided that it would be safer to get it changed now,
Rather than have a problem where we’re on a mountain in the middle of nowhere. Simon also gave all the batteries a good check. Simon’s just calling a contact to see if it’s possible to get some extra batteries because he tested the engine battery, and said it’s a bit low,
And although it’s been sat in a port for a month between getting from Korea to here, it shouldn’t be that flat! so probably safer to get it changed! Okay so after spending the day in the garage, it didn’t go quite according to plan!
They’ve got a bit of pipe work that needs to be replaced and we’re going to have to order that from Europe somewhere, Turn left here my sweetness, and that means we’re actually going to have to stay in KL another day, because we’ve got to bring the van back to Simon tomorrow,
But it’s all good, we found a problem, we’re fixing it before we hit the road, which we’re always thankful for. Good morning so last night didn’t quite go according to plan, we ended up emailing our contacts back home, and Ersel to try and get the parts for Trudy that Simon needs to repair the brakes.
And they came back to say they don’t manufacture them anymore, and they’re out of stock! So we’re going to have to do a little bit more more searching, because we need to get repaired before we carry on,
I’m not panicking yet, I’m not going to let some pipe work ruin our round the world drive! So this morning we’re taking it back to Simon he’s going to be doing some more work on the brakes, and we’ll keep you posted, but I think the plans for the week may be forced to change!
We weren’t expecting that on our first week of van life here in Malaysia! Okay so we should be able to make the pipe work, because it’s a copper, like a metal pipe work so they should be able to make it bend it and then put the attachments in the end.
Okay so that’s sounding hopeful so the part that was leaking is between the pipe work and the brake cylinders, but he said if we get two new pumps because one of the seals has gone, then it should be okay and the pumps were in stock in Europe so that’s great and he also said,
That after he’s finished today we should be able to travel no problem, so we should be able to hit the road tomorrow as planned Two hours later Trudy is all ready! Amazing Trudy is now roadworthy, so all good, that was a relief and they’re going to make the pipes when we come back,
Because we’re doing a loop round Malaysia, so we’ll be passing this way again. Back into Trudy my sweet ! Where I should be! One of the problems we’ve had in Japan and Korea is we couldn’t top up with LPG,
And looking at the connection our friends have said that we can’t fill up from a petrol station here either, so we’ve managed to find an LPG company, so we’re going to do our first little trip to the other side of KL see them, to see if they can maybe make or tweak one of our adapters?!
As we headed across the city I thought isn’t it funny how something that could be so simple to do back home, can end up being so complicated in another country. How many lanes on my phone here, 11!! They got lots of Tolls and you got to pick the one with the right height barrier.
Just keep, keep going straight, okay it should be just over here somewhere, get behind that white one if you can. Tap and go can you tap? Oh you can tap and go! The good thing is all these car Parks work with the toll card.
The shop should be literally there, you go, you’re in! It says it’s here? It must be one of these? Is it that one there? So that one’s 110 that one’s 08 and what number is she? 05? so it is probably down? C 105 ? I’m so confused, me too!
Okay so we are in the right place, their offices are upstairs, so we’re just waiting for the technical guy to come and have a look at Trudy’s little LPG connection. Oh there you go, he’s here, that is the technician! We have put a tank underneath professionally in England before we left,
Now normally in Europe, America, Canada and Mexico we go to the LPG station, we put in an adaptor from a different country, this one is North America, this one is Europe, this one I haven’t used.
And we put the adapter like that, oh yeah adapter here and then we go to Petronus or any garage – but LPG We continue to explain how we usually fill up Trudy’s LPG, but it seems that Camper vans and Overland Vehicles here don’t have LPG tanks fitted, so filling up here isn’t looking good!
Don’t have in Malaysia – Cylinder only! Time for Plan B! we should be able to connect an LPG bottle, but first we need to remove the protective box that we built around the old pipe work,
We got the box off – it’s a bit warm is it love isn’t it!? I am dying don’t die for Instagram! He’s looking under the bed because originally we had it so the there used to be propane tanks like you know gas bottles under the bed in a locker
And then we took them out and put the tank and now we’re going to try and find …. he’s going to get his toolbox, all right rock and roll – you know it is serious when the tool box comes out!
The engineer was so helpful and he tried his best to find a solution for us, but it was all getting a bit too complicated ! Just now I say – balance is a 10 psi, yes
Your cylinder is a 60, so you put the ice here and go down to pressure down to zero, but do you know someone who can do it – No Oh well, one thing, isn’t it humid here in Malaysia? I cannot tell you how hot it is in this van!
I know some of you have actually talked to us about weather windows, and why are we coming through Asia in the summer times, and not trying to avoid the heat and the monsoon?! we have no choice! and it’s hot here all the time! We are looking at Aircon units or fans but anyway …..
About the LPG – basically we can’t do it in Malaysia, even putting tanks under the bed option, the standard tanks are too big for our locker under the bed, so we’re back to the 12 volt fridge, so yeah thank goodness we’ve got Jackary!
Did you know that on our website we have a perk section where you can get discounts on products that we use and love, so if you want any Jackary products you can get 10% discount by using the link on our website!
There you go I never thought a few years ago, I’ll be able to see the Petronas towers out of Trudy’s wind screen! What you reckon love? I reckon that is a site that I would not get bored of very easily!!
Must be weird if you’re a tourist, and then suddenly you see a British van?! I would be really shocked and surprised okay we are back at the polo club, today is the day that we are leaving Kuala Lumpur to start the adventures around Malaysia. You can see that it’s very cloudy, the rain is coming,
But Peter is manning the hose pipe for us this is Natasha’s husband, Peter! Thank you very much! So we’re filling Trudy up, and this is Natasha who I went to school with! This is coach Ali ! Hi coach Ali! Have a safe drive! Thank you so much!
The Lifesaver is filled up if you haven’t seen this device before you should definitely get one because it makes all drinking water safe to drink, and there’s actually a link on our website where you can get a discount! There you go Marianne. Oh – a lovely horse!
I found him in Argentina a few years ago, they said he looks exactly like a like Si Babas horse – hello! They bought him, you’re beautiful aren’t you?! What do you think? what do you think Capo? Do you go for a ride? Yeah you think you’re going onto a float?
What do you think? do you want to come on a road trip ? do you want to go on a road trip? we could do a road trip on you next time maybe ?! Okay thank you for letting us park here guys!
Thank you so much, and we’ll see you when we get back in a few weeks! Thank you for everything! Have a great one, thank you, You have been great friends to us thank you! we’ll see you soon! We’re going to drop Natasha home on the way! Natasha is in Trudy!
So Natasha actually went to school with me in the UK, so she has a lot of stories that I’m learning all about !! Nobody’s allowed to message Natasha!! Thank you very much, see you again,
Bye-bye bye – thank you, drive safely and take care, yeah thank you Natasha, love you thank you! oh so nice, such nice guys! One thing I do love about Malaysia is there’s so many food stands, markets and things like that,
And I’m very excited at the prospect of eating my way around Malaysia because you all know how much I love food! So normally we get the map on the side of the van to show you the route but unfortunately because we’re a bit disorganised because we just setting off again,
I couldn’t find it! The plan today is that we’re going to be driving South, we’re going to go all the way down through Malacca to Johor Baru, and we’re going to get the bus over to Singapore, because we can’t take Trudy.
And the reason we’re doing that is because I have a lot of friends in Singapore because I used to live there many years ago, and then we’re going to be heading up and starting the long journey through Malaysia,
And eventually Crossing into Thailand – but we’ll share more on that route once we’ve figured out exactly where we’re going. It’s a bit of a grey day today it is actually their monsoon season on the on the East coast.
So today the first stop is we’re going to go and visit a motor home repair company, an Overland company to see watch out watch out watch out! a motorbike just stopped in the road because he dropped his shoe ! is he mad? on a Motorway!!
Flippin Heck! Sorry …. expect the expected well done Marianne. Ovaries of steel! I just saw him, he was literally just stopped in the Middle Lane!! What the heck ! Who does that? He does!
Okay start again – so the plan today is we’re going to an Overland company because if you remember when we were in Korea, the roof hatches were all leaking and we’re going to try and get them taken out and resealed. probably on the way up after after we go to Singapore,
One thing you do have to watch out for is the motorbikes because they do drive like lunatics half the time, and they cut you up and weave in and out of the cars, and that’s why we left after rush hour today after 9:00 because there is literally hundreds of them at each traffic light
During rush hour, and that’s when they’re not just stopping in the middle of the road! So much written on these Direction boards it’s quite hard to get your head around them, although it is in English characters which helps compared to Korea and Japan.
There’s one thing Malaysia has, is crazy amounts of flyovers and train lines above! I’ve never seen a city like KL with so many flyovers! They also have a lot of toll booths here and we have to go over to the left,
To make sure we can go through one without a height barrier, these two have no height barriers and all the rest have height barriers. So you don’t want to get into the wrong lane! and then we’ve got a touch and go card – here’s one we made earlier!
Which you just tap on and it should let you through, and apparently you can top them up at Petrol Stations so we’ll have to top ours up when we stop. Good morning, 1.30 RM! lovely wave from the the guys in the Truck there – that’s nice welcome!
I just can’t get my head around the fact there banana trees all the way down the side of the road everywhere! There’s banana tree! I’m pretty sure that Tambah Nilai means you can top up your card, so let’s try…. Good morning, can I top up my card? Can I top up 50 RM?
Thank you – Oh you can! that is right, good job!! there you go, that save us topping it up at a petrol station! Apparently you can also top them up at Watson’s Pharmacy, 7-Eleven and petrol stations… okay the heavens have opened!
But the good thing is normally I don’t want to Temp fate but normally…. don’t do it! Normally it only rains for a short while and then the Sun comes back out again, and it just cools the air, but makes it a little bit more humid afterwards …. a little bit more humid! yay!
It is very hot in the van!! and then just like that the sun’s come out again! There you go RV camperV expert that’s the one Camper RV! Good job !
We want to thank the traveling aunties – two Singaporean ladies we met in Turkiye, they’ve been driving around they’ve just been up to Alaska and places, but they recommended coming to this place. so cool they got Vans, buses there, a bus, oh they got loads of stuff,
They got these 4×4 trucks, that looks cool doesn’t it? Trudy’s Big Brother! very cool …. oh this is an amazing truck! oh my God I love it! Did you build this ? yeah yeah we build it, Oh my goodness it’s luxury it’s luxury – it is like a hotel !!
Oh my goodness look at that! The camper was bigger than it looked from the outside … interesting, maybe, just maybe this is something to consider for the future, if we end up doing a more adventurous off-road trip that Trudy couldn’t physically do, what do you think?
Yeah I love this the storage, yeah but there is more … oh my God! The rain started again, yeah we can never plan a good weather window! The good news is after speaking to the guys at the RV place, we have a plan!
So they’re going to reseal the roofs for us, take out the hatches and reseal them, so yeah it was good, so we’ll we’ll plan to see those guys when we’re heading North again . Now we’ got an hour and a half drive South to Malacca.
Today is full of hazards ! We just passed a tree that had fallen into the slow lane of the motorway it’s like there’s no warnings anywhere! I have established what the main problem is, everybody drives way too close way too fast! Yeah we about passed three accidents so far today, Totalled accidents!
You see how close that coach is behind! I’m doing 60 something miles an hour! Okay we’re nearly at Malacca, the sun is coming out and we’ve booked a hotel for tonight, because we wanted to be right in the heart of the town so we can go and visit the night market,
And it said online that they’ve got secure parking nearby so fingers crossed we can fit Trudy in! So we’re just going to fill up we thought that the diesel cover actually meant that it wasn’t available, but I think they’ve done that to stop you accidentally filling up with diesel?
So much easier to see it in English and you can pay at the pump and it works! yeah it was 114 MR for 53 Litre, it’s a lot cheaper than back home! oh my goodness – some drinks and things for you, oh really? oh that’s amazing! Thank you !! You are welcome!
About £ 25 to fill up, and all the staff at the petrol station gave us a bag with a couple of soft drinks and a cloth to clean the windscreen – amazing! They’ve obviously been watching the videos and have seen how our wind screen gets dirty!! Very nice welcome here to Malacca!
So we’re nearly at the hotel and looks like we’re staying in Little India Malacca, that great! There is going to be good food tonight then! Oh it looks great there’s loads of little restaurants and shops and Market stands …. but I think, oh my goodness they’ got those multicoloured baggy trousers! We need those !!
I think this is where the this comes to life at night? I think we’re actually staying almost in the Night Market? Which could be quite fun?! love night markets! Oh this is great! 100 m it’s coming up just here, stop behind that white car. oh there you go, just stop here.
Okay I’ve just dropped the bags off, we’re going to go and park up and then we’ll walk back, just to Save carrying the bags Straight down here first left. That is slightly terrifying! I think that’s the pinkest chair you got a My Little Pony chair …. that’s hilarious! Let’s go this way. I love Malacca
I can’t quite figure out the Mad Cycles with all the teddies on them? Hi, how are you? okay, ooh nice! perfect! Oh it’s got a huge shower that’s nice, this is lovely this a good little room, I love it! £29 a night, that will do – thank you very much!
Okay so let’s go and have a look around Malacca! It feels like Bruges doesn’t it? it feels like Belgium, this is nice isn’t it ? it’s really lovely, they got this River here with all these cafes and bars overlooking it as far as the eye can see.
That might be a nice place to come for a little cheeky beer later I think Marianne? Why cheeky? can it not just be a beer?! I think we might have a little beer there! Hi, hello, watermelon juice …..oh they got all these little stands down here
I never thought I’d see a windmill in Malacca, but the reason there’s a windmill there is because, Malacca was colonised years ago by the Dutch, there’s a real Dutch influence here in Malacca, that’s lovely! That’s a great view! All these Vines hanging down.
You can actually take a river boat Tour by the looks of it. This is Jonker Walk so every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night there is actually a night market. Tonight is Thursday so there isn’t a night market on tonight, but it’s still really cool to walk around we got our timings kind of wrong!
But there are so many little stands, and the buildings are just lovely! Chicken curry bread oh my God look at the size of that! It looks beautiful! Curry puff – it’s huge though! look at the size of it!! yeah
This is not spicy – oh not spicy? that one’s salty, that one’s spicy! What is Kaya puff? Kaya is a coconut Jam – oh coconut jam….. we’ll try one of those chicken bun, a chicken bun – Thank you!
Oh it smells lovely, salty chicken filling wrapped in pastry! I think we might be doing a bit of eating today! Today Malacca is one of the oldest cities in Malaysia and was previously ruled by the Portuguese, British, but mostly by the Dutch. In 2008 the city was given a UNESCO world heritage status.
I can smell durian! so if you’ve never been to the far East there a fruit here which is famous for its smell, and most hotels don’t allow it, public transport doesn’t allow it, and it looks like that! I actually personally really like the smell of durian, it reminds me of my time in Singapore,
But Marianne thinks I’m mad when I say that! Marianne do you like the smell of durian? There are so many of these old school traditional looking buildings, I mean look at that, that is a fantastic looking building! You can’t get more traditional than that, can you?
Wandering through the picturesque little streets filled with old buildings and little shops, you’re given a glimpse back into days gone by. You can hear them coming! The colourful bikes taking tourists around the city blasting pop music louder than most nightclubs!
It seemed a bit mad to me in such a traditional location …. oh maybe I’m getting old! Oh well the visiting tourists seem to love it as they all whiz pass with huge grins on their faces. There are so many lovely old antique shops, Food Shops.
Look at that building ,that’s very beautiful old style that’s been maintained and restored there, very nice. As you walk around, you see quite a few Nonya restaurants, Nonya Cuisine is a merge of Chinese and Malay, it’s kind of a fusion and then you got whole colourful
Buildings everywhere’s just got so much character like the TV and the bikes Malacca how have you not been in my life before? I love it! it’s been a place I’ve always wanted to come to, it’s a shame we haven’t got longer because we’re going to go to Singapore tomorrow
As I said but yeah it’s definitely a very very pretty city! Maybe when we finish driving around the world we could come back? I think maybe! look they’ve even got a very cool mini! That is a very beautiful looking Temple I assume that’s a temple.
We’ve come around into the back streets now haven’t we so it’s a little bit less crazy, we’ve escaped the madness for a short moment! yeah this is one of the original style houses here on stilts. Isn’t that fantastic?! Oh my goodness look at that Temple there! There’s a Temple behind this wall here that’s amazing.
Wow this is amazing look at this Temple. Founded in the 1600s the Chen hun Tang Temple is considered Malaysia’s oldest Chinese temple. Fascinating to think that it survived all those years, if only the walls could talk I’m sure they’ tell a story or two.
Every street here is amazing, look that way, that way, that way, and that way! what a place! As Chris has mentioned before there’s lots of different architecture and stuff going on here, and I know the proper word is probably Fusion,
But possibly I’m just going to say it’s like the biggest mashup of all the best, of every culture, it’s just awesome here! I’m loving Malacca! Beautiful! Hello good evening hi beautiful Here in Malacca they’ve also got this wonderful Street, completely covered in a wonderful street art! look it’s just absolutely fantastic!
What do you reckon? I reckon we hit gold! Look at this I’ve never seen such a cool little back alley! wow how lovely that’s what you call a plant that looks like something in my mom’s Conservatory! that is a house plant…. but, look at the root system!
It’s just literally just Roots going into this water drain here, that’s amazing! I’ve never seen anything like it! check out the local launderette! is that not just the best out on the street here look! just a washer dryer we headed back to the river for that well- earned drink
And spotted a monitor lizard you see a lot of them in Malaysia, but that’s the first time I’ve ever spotted one swimming! Who knew they could swim so well ?! As the sun slow slowly went down we sat relaxing and soaking in the atmosphere,
If you come to Malaysia you should definitely add a visit to Malacca! it’s that time already it’s dinner time and we found a hawker Center here, you just can’t beat these to get local food so we’re going to go and see if we can find something tonight for dinner.
We got noodles, beer, ice coffee and water ! we got it all going on!! I used to always eat Char sui noodles when I was at College in Singapore, and thank you very much and I haven’t had char sui noodles for a long time,
It’s like Chinese barbecued pork with some chili and noodles and greens. As we enjoyed our local dinner it took me back to those good old College days in Singapore, strange that there’s not a tourist in sight you really just can’t beat these local places.
So after that wonderful dinner we hope you’ve enjoyed this episode and we’ll see you next Sunday
As we start our Malaysian Road Trip in our UK campervan we get a few unexpected surprises on the way

If you thought KL has a tonne of flyovers, overhead train tracks and crazy motorcyclists which we too get annoyed with, wait till you get to Bangkok. Btw i know this is comment comes 2 weeks after your video log but i hope you managed to drop by Taman Negara in Pahang which is the largest National Forest in west Malaysia.

Malacca is Historical and Peace state.
Have a week or so at our islands..Mabul, Mataking, Tioman, Perhentian, Redang..
