Capranica Prenestina (Lazio), Italy【Walking Tour】History in Subtitles – 4K

[Drone intro🌐] [Walking tour begins👣 Piazza di S.Maria Maddalena⛲] 1 – 5 [⛪Church of St.Mary Magdalene⛪] The church in its original form with one nave was built in the sixteenth century by Giuliano Capranica. We know that it was completed in 1520.

2 – 5 The Church is characterized by the beautiful dome (“Il Cupolino”) and the 15th century bell tower. Various studies have recognized that it is most likely the work of assistants and students of Bramante’s school.

3 – 5 The restoration of 1750 was very invasive and also disrespectful of the previous construction. The vault was built by overlapping it with the beamed ceiling and therefore raising it with evident damage to the sixteenth-century decorations of the dome.

4 – 5 In 1868-1869 a further restoration was carried out with the construction of the left nave and the new sacristy in place of the so-called “room of the dead”, or the ossuary. In 2016, the restoration work inside and outside the church was completed.

5 – 5 The restoration work also involved the pipe organ dating back to 1750, which after many years has returned to make its beautiful “voice” heard inside the church. [Piazza della Torre⛲]

1 – 13 [📋🏺Brief History🏺📋] The area in which it is located was inhabited even before the common era, but the village was mentioned for the first time in a Papal Bull of 970 BC as part of the possessions granted in emphyteusis by Pope John XIII to his sister.

2 – 13 At that time, the town of Capranica was located a few kilometers away to the north from the current site: traces of it still visible today, which take the name of Capranica Vecchia.

3 – 13 Developed around a castle, the original village was destroyed by a fire and its inhabitants were forced to move to the current site, first called Castello Nuovo and then Capranica.

4 – 13 In the following decades, the village continued to follow the events of the Crescenzi family and subsequently of the Colonna family, whose lineage began in the second half of the eleventh century.

5 – 13 An act dated 7 February 1252, which establishes the assignment of Capranica to Oddone Colonna, is the first historical testimony of the existence of today’s Capranica Prenestina.

6 – 13 After a few decades the village was destroyed by the papal troops of Boniface VIII in 1298, as part of the power struggle between the Caetani family and the Colonna family.

7 – 13 In 1417, the accession to the papal throne of a member of the Colonna family indirectly represented a fundamental event for the small Prenestine town.

8 – 13 In fact, it was Oddone Colonna, Pope Martin V, who appointed Domenico Capranica, born in Capranica in 1400 and already bishop, cardinal in 1426, thus increasing the prestige of the Capranica family.

9 – 13 In the so-called “salt war”, which saw Capranica besieged in 1484 by the papal troops of Sixtus IV, allies of the Republic of Venice, and defended by the Colonna army.

10 – 13 Pope Borgia, who ascended the papal throne in 1492 with the name of Alexander VI, forcibly interrupted the Colonna lordship over the Prenestine village; in 1503 Pope Julius II returned it to its previous owners.

11 – 13 In 1568 Angelo Capranica purchased the castle from the Massimo family, who had obtained it five years earlier from the Colonna family, and established his lordship there, building the baronial palace.

12 – 13 After about eighty years, economic difficulties forced the Capranicas to cede the village to the Barberini family, who retained possession of it until 1870. 13 – 13 Today the town is a very detached and quiet place, far from mass tourism and an undiscovered little gem. [Via sulle Mura] [Via Buonarroti]

[Piazza Aristide Frezza & Barberini Palace⛲] [Underpassage on Barberini Palace🔎🏛🌻] 1 – 3 [🏰Barbarini Palace🏰] Palazzo Capranica, today Barberini, stands out for its grandeur on the compact building structure of the village. 2 – 3 The Palace stands on ancient medieval pre-existences of which evidence is still preserved in the internal structure.

3 – 3 On the outside its noble sixteenth-century structure elegantly articulated between a dense texture of white limestone still remains intact.
