Is MALAYSIA as friendly as we first thought?
If you are you lucky you can see the white snake. 4 years ago we left the UK in our camper van in an attempt to drive around the world. An exciting and nerve-wracking experience. We had no idea what to expect, completely new countries, new cultures, new foods, languages we can’t understand…..
Do you speak English please? No ! Every time we cross into a new country, we have a preconceived image of what it will be like based on what we’ve seen on the news, TV and social media, but we never really know how we’ll be received until we go there.
Today we get to see what Malaysians are like away from the normal holiday destinations. There are no foreign lands, it is the traveller only, who is foreign. – Robert Louis Stevenson.
We’re still at this little hotel here and the reason we’re still here is because the weather still looks like this!! It’s absolutely piddling it down! in fact we went online to check what the weather forecast was and this is what is said!
An area of enhanced convection working into Malaysia, where I think the rains are going to become extremely heavy, torrential probably bringing some flooding and maybe some severe flooding over the next few days. In fact it’s been so bad north of here, which is where we were going that we’re actually going to be changing our plans,
And heading in a different direction tomorrow. It’s a bit wet Marianne! It’s not great, we have heard about a particularly good Roti place just up the road,
We have shoes in hand, ready to go for dinner and the heavens have opened again it’s only like 20 minutes away, we thought we had a window to go, hopefully it’s not outside seating otherwise it will probably be closed tonight! but we have umbrellas, let’s just embrace the rain! British and all …..
Okay we’re going for it! It’s not great! Oh my god, oh I’ve steamed up! it’s so warm in here I’ve steamed up! Everything’s steamed up! The hotel doesn’t have many parking spots so I’m going to try and put one of the bollards to reserve our little spot here, otherwise it may be full!
Is this a good time to say you should have put it further to the left? Oh my goodness Marianne, where are we going? I don’t know! we have lamb curry! yes! Oh you really like it ? I don’t know, we try – you try, Okay!
Do you eat spicy food? I do, I love spicy food, you like it Sorry – my name is Johari Johari Chris Chris Chris then your wife? Marianne. We’re coming to have a look at the kitchen, oh roti – is that the Tandoor? oh my goodness!
There you go that’s what it looks like, thank you very much. look at this, so that is a naan bread cooked in a Tandoor, the roti and then lamb Curry. Marianne got the chicken curry, I got the chicken curry and Roti – oh amazing! Traditional eat with the hands, oh it’s very hot!
You really like it? Good as they say in Malaysia! yeah it was recommended, and it is really good! Really good, if you’ve been following us for a while you’ll know that Chris is very rarely quiet….. he really is quiet thank you Chef! thank you!
There’s the little story behind the name of this restaurant which is called Chichoh, so actually Chichoh is a slang, it means by the action when you are eating something, especially the Roti chenai and the naan is actually dipping it in the curry. Oh so the action itself is called Chichoh
And is that is that just in this region they say that? Yeah yeah, But then if you’re in KL they’ll call it chicha oh chicha …. and that goes something like this and delicious! Chichoh! That was literally the best Curry I have had in Malaysia!
So yeah if you’re near Kuantan, chichoh you have to come here! and even if you’re not here, you should come here! you should come for a day trip! so if watch this back guys from the restaurant – Thank you for your hospitality! there’s a family of four on the motorbike front of us,
THE NEXT DAY There’s no rain! it’s the first morning where there’s no rain! Yeah there is still rain forecasts everywhere in Malaysia, but right now it’s not raining! so we’re deciding that we are going to carry on our adventures,
But with a slight detour, we’re going to get the map on the side of the van and we’ll show you the plan. Okay so we’re currently parked up this is where we’ve been staying just south of Kuantan,
The plan was originally, we were going to drive up the coastline to Kuala Terenggaru, but this is where they’ve had the really bad floods, in fact it’s even been on the news, and then we were going to go up to Kota Bharu, but that plan is scrapped now because of the weather.
So the plan is today we’re going to drive to go and visit a cool looking Temple here, do a little bit of a hike and then carry on West, and then we’re going to head up towards Ipoh um and the Cameron Highlands up in this region here,
That’s the plan – but obviously with the weather and the monsoon warnings … keep your fingers crossed! Anything could happen! But even though it’s cloudy it’s still hot and humid, and I’m still sweating!
But before we hit the road we thought we’d take you to the little place around the corner where we’ve been having lunch and breakfast, and just give you a taste of little local Malaysian life here. it’s been a good place to rest up,
Lovely little place just south of the town, but even though there’s been so much rain we’ve still been able to just chill out here, do some work, and get some cat love! there’s a lot of cats there’s a lot of cats…. in fact I’m going to include the photo of the kitten here,
That looks like a gangster! Hi, this is where we’ve been having lunch and breakfast, Nasi Ayam Hainan, okay we’ve ordered a few Roti for breakfast, from The Amazing local roti chef! Okay I’m going to try! oh flat hand? yeah, okay this is definitely a lot harder than it looks! uhoh !
One more, one more, one more, okay! okay you didn’t get the job, but 10 out of 10 for effort!! Is it okay? is it okay? all right Marianne! now it’s your turn! hold on it looks like she’s going to do it all with her hand?!
That is cheating! Why am I cheating? you’re supposed to throw it! I am going to throw it!! Whoopsy! Oh it’s worse than mine! what’s that?! it has to be like a round movement! They also had a selection of other freshly cooked local dishes available.
Good morning! By coincidence the couple who ran the restaurant that we went to for dinner last night turned up, so we invited them to join us. This one it is called chicken with… Is it spicy? Yeah is it spicy yes yeah a spicy the roti is beautiful !
How about the chicken? the chicken a little bit sweet a little bit spicy, Marvellous! I love it, if I lived in Malaysia I would be very fat! it’s true, this is the chicken rice we’ve been having here every lunch time. it’s very very nice! Here is the chef!
Is fish curry? oh this is durian curry? Okay I’m going to try the sauce, it’s fermented durian right? fermented okay I’m not even sure … I’ll try it, okay, oh that’s interesting ! interesting …. ? ha ha ha – it’s actually nice but it tastes like durian smells!
Okay durian smell of course, of course! Of course because there’s durian in it!! fermented durian !! I like it but the durian flavour is a bit strange! Thank you very much! bye bye!
So I’ve got something that I want to talk to you guys about. This week I watched a talk on cyber security, This is a list of over a 100 people at VID Summit that went through my system in 3 hours. The guy doing the talk is a professional hacker,
But he uses the hacking for good, what was really amazing is that during 3 hours whilst he was at the conference, he managed to hack 100 out of 102 people’s phones!! Now that is a scary thought! But what stopped him hacking those two phones? Two people had a VPN on!
It was basically because they were using a VPN. We’ve been using surf shark VPN for years to keep us safe on the road. it basically creates an encrypted tunnel which keeps you and your data safe whilst you’re surfing online.
So surf shark is the only VPN company that allows use on an unlimited number of devices so you can keep yourself and your whole family safe. it’s really a no-brainer for the cost of a cup of coffee, this is some serious gourmet ….
You get to protect your bank details, your social media channels, your personal data, so make sure you’re not one of those people that gets hacked! By getting a subscription to Surf Shark VPN, and until the end of January you can get an exclusive surf shark deal. By entering the code treadtheglobe
They give you 6 months extra for free! So to get started either click the link in the description below or scan the QR code, don’t get get hacked! Okay after that most amazing breakfast we’re set up for the day. and it is time to hit the road!
Bye ladies – thank you again! bye! see you again! oh it’s been so lovely yeah, they’ve been so so lovely. There’s something magical putting that aircon on I tell you!
It’s the 100% humidity as well, you just don’t stop sweating, we are just constantly covered it in a like a layer of wetness, luckily this isn’t smell-a-Vision people! it’s so nice to see that the rain stopped for the moment, it really has been wet!
But the little spot we found as we head back West, there is a wonderful Temple up in the mountains in a cave, it looks very cool online so we’re going to do a little hike and see if we can get there.
Now looking at this weather it’s hard to believe that it’s still so wet further north of here, because it’s hot and you think why can’t we just go north, as we always do we listen to local advice and if they say don’t go north, and multiple people told us that, then we don’t !
Oh there a massive mosque there look at that! Some of the roads get a bit confusing, we want to turn right at the lights, but we realised we’re in a U-turn Lane, we have to see if we can if we can squeeze back in … I think I might be able to squeeze back in!
Are they going to let us in? Yeah – every’s very polite here they seem very polite. It is starting to get quite hilly up in the far distance there, I think it’s going to be an interesting drive through the middle of Malaysia, through the jungles!
I was just thinking I need to start watching the sides of the roads again to see what comes jumping out in front of me! yeah an elephant would be cool! That is on the list! okay we just had to stop because of this view…
It’s the first time on our trip so far that we’ve seen these! check this out! There’s a whole field of buffalo! With the white egret birds! how amazing is that that’s absolutely beautiful! Wow does that remind you of our honeymoon?
It does we we actually went to Langkawi for our honeymoon and this was in every field! Oh it’s Buffy the buffalo…. We just saw another group of monkeys by the side of the road! that’s something I’m not going to get used to for a while! I just love it, absolutely love it!
So I’m pretty sure it’s down here, let’s give it a bash, you’re not going to make me climb up that rock? I don’t know, I think it might be on top of that or up on that Hill!? it can’t be? let’s let’s go down here and see if we can find the entrance…
I did look online they said this place was quite hard to find, you got to drive through like a plantation ….where are you taking me? Just driving through the Palm Plantation they got by the side of the road this is what they Harvest,
These are the things that grow on the side of the Palms, look at that – big berries! I think that’s what they get palm oil from. There roads going on forever, I hope we’re in the right place?! I think it’s at the end of this road? Right, that is the end of the road !
So you’re going to have to turn right… and then yeah it’s got to be here, I don’t know is that the name of it? hello! that’s a good way to keep the grass down in between all the trees.
There’s a couple of cars at the end, there you go I think we’re in the right place, because that looks like an entrance. so yeah let’s just park up. Walk this way? yes, okay. open every day from 9: until 5. Let’s go and see what this is all about. The cliffs are absolutely amazing!
Hello wow the stairs go all the way up, I’m not sure how high we’re going to be walking but I got a feeling it’s going to be high, there you go two ringgit per person. the stairs go up the side of the mountain, we’re going up the Cliff face Marianne!
I’m not sure how far this is. Oh wow the stairs are actually quite slippy, Okay up we go! There’s actually holes in that I don’t think you walk on that bit?! hopefully we’re going the right way? wow that’s a serious view! Oh that’s worth it just for that view,
It’s interesting because we’re standing on the side of something that looks like that! I just love the way this tree sends its branches or roots vertically down, it just looks so cool! These rock formations on the side of this Cliff is amazing,
But I think we’re almost up there, I think it’s just up here. Don’t look down ! Why is it when someone says Don’t Look Down, you just have to look down? still going up! So now there’s this cave entrance, it’s very slippy, just be careful. I wish I had my flip flops on!
Oh wow it looks quite big! I wasn’t expecting to see a cave this big up here! it’s massive…. there’s nobody here! this is unbelievable! We couldn’t quite believe how large this cave was, looking into the depths you can see glimpses of the lit temple in the distance,
There so much water dripping from the roof from the rains we’ve had over the last few days, it actually feels like it’s raining in here this is crazy, there is block Paving and then they’ve got this picture of a sleeping lying Buddha I think maybe.
I never expected this cave to be as big as it is, it reminds me of the Batu caves in Kuala Lumpur, and you can imagine that this is what the Batu caves or something like it would have looked like before it was fully developed,
What a fantastic place and then at the end you’ve got a a temple area it just keeps going on! it really does! I can’t believe the amount of work, the painting the maintenance is wild, it’s like a really cool attraction that no one’s really found yet apart from the locals,
Yeah look at these uh look how smooth this rock is here from all the water running through over the years, making these look very cool! wow how is this not a thing? why is it not packed here?
I suppose it’s so off the Beaten Track and it’s not really somewhere that you would come because there’s no real airport or like Big Town nearby, apart from Kuantan which isn’t an hour away yeah there’s this static tight stellic might not quite joined you think how many thousands
Of years has that been going on and one day they’ll meet in the middle cool right? very cool there’s this wonderful smell of incense from all the just sticks burning throughout the cave. But without the air blowing I cannot begin to tell you how hot it is, I’m literally …. oh very hot!
Look at this structure here? this is like a giant stalactite and stalagmite! I just can’t believe it and it just keeps going on! Ah the last one – the sleeping buddha If you are lucky, you can see the White Snake, the white snake? Oh there is a white snake? not dangerous – okay
Oh like a Boa or python or something? That is a god of mercy a Lady god Thank you …. apparently there’s a white snake if we’re lucky we get to see it, which he said is a God, it’s a female god, wow not poisonous, this is amazing ….
So he said that between 11 and 12, at some point – that hole there – the sun comes down and lights up the the Buddha, that’s amazing I don’t know whether you can see that? But that is one big spider web !! yeah – time to go!
Time to go and I don’t want one of those in Trudy thank you very much! All coming down from up there amazing, oh Marianne’s found a puppy! Hello …. that is gorgeous!! oh he’s very cute! Do you want to come and live in a van? no!!
Do you want to come to England and live in a van? no!! so after that cool Temple we’re going to drive probably about another hour and a half west, to find somewhere for the night, sit back relax and enjoy the beautiful Malayan Countryside! Just a massive monitor lizard walking across the road!
There you go, school is out, look how many motorbikes they have! They are definitely the preferred mode of Transport over here, if fact it is making me miss my motorbike from Years Gone by, who knows maybe one day we’ll do a motorbike trip what you reckon? maybe one day…
I’ve only got my basic license because I had a Honda 90, so I would have to take my test! that would be cool what you reckon maybe a future tread the globe motorbike trip somewhere … that could be really cool!! or off-roading? Lovely driving through these towns all the little old wooden buildings,
Yeah this is nice, it’s nice to see the traditional side to Malaysia. okay we just stopped at a garage for a quick toilet break, and there’s…. what are they? turkeys? turkey, peahen, chicks and there’s a couple of ducks over there as well somewhere.
I love it there’s just chickens Ducks turkeys and everything wandering around! We used to have a pet turkey called George, we did he was cool wasn’t he? yes we did, we’re a bit weird! So we’re just passing through the town of Temerloh and before we find somewhere to park up tonight,
We spotted this vanilla Farm! The Amani vanilla farm, so we’re going to going to see if we can see some vanilla growing, or at least have a vanilla something… ice cream? well ice cream is definitely the obvious thing, so let’s see what we can find! Hello – oh it’s your company? nice to meet you !
Can we see vanilla yes of course, but we don’t charge for entrance, okay, but you make sure to buy something – of course! of course when you’ve got vanilla ice cream how can you not?! We’re starting off with eating vanilla ice cream with a topping,
I’ve got a palm sugar and Marianne’s got a salted caramel, apparently you can choose one scoop or two, I did ask why they even have one on the menu! This is what I call Naughty But Nice! Oh my goodness, we might have to live here! Maybe we move in!
Amani it’s a collection centre for all Farmers under vanilla Temerloh, Okay they grow vanilla, yes they grow vanilla and I buy back and sell back to you, to customers. So now we have 500 members under vanilla Temerloh, wow! We use this supporting tree,
Oh is this vanilla? this is vanilla – wow it is like orchid, this is vanilla pod! You never seen this before? No never, I have never seen, not on a plant. I’ve seen dried before but never on a plant! these come from Mexico.
In Mexico the plants are normally pollinated by a local bee, but here in Malaysia the plants have to be hand pollinated. We then headed inside where he showed us the dry vanilla pods, and how they extract the vanilla. That is exactly what I would expect to see if I bought dry vanilla.
You have to put out, yeah and like this. They produce a selection of vanilla based products like this vanilla flavoured sugar for your coffee. oh that’s good, that’s so good isn’t it?
It’s amazing so to help you sleep they got this pillow spray with vanilla and all these different ingredients, so Chris is going to be sleeping like a baby in the van! Tread the globe sticker to show our official approval of how fabulous this ice cream is, because it’s so delicious!
There you go we’re leaving a little Mark of Tread the Globe here, yeah good job! And if you come here make sure you come and take a selfie with our sticker and send it to us, tag Us in! So we know you’ve been here! Thank you very much, you’re welcome thank you!

Come to north..visit kedah
The best hospitality in the wotld is Malaysian especially by 'Malay' 🙂
Simply awesome❤
I love rain😅
Oh how I wish I was with you! Continued wonderful travels. I do cook and clean! 🤣
If you manage to get to Penang Island be sure to visit the Kek Lok Si Temple it's stunning. We had a 5 day stopover at Batu Ferringhi on route to New Zealand in 1999. The food was as good as I've tasted anywhere and the people are wonderfully friendly.
A tailor made me a wonderful suit overnight and delivered it to my hotel room before we set off for the airport, 14 hours from start to delivery! He kept apologizing for the price but said that he had to pay his staff extra because it was a holiday. How much did it cost? £30 and I've still got it and it still looks good.
Did hope to return but not yet managed it! Hoping that you could take us there👍👍
Eating with your left hand..?????
You two just MAKE my Sunday Mornings. Your videos fill me with inspiration and joy. Love seeing people live their best lives and you two are slaying it!!! Love your adventures can't wait to see what's next. All the best on your journeys and safe travels!!!
There are no speed cameras on those roads, but beware the lizard crossing the road…it’s there to monitor your speed 😆
it always monsoon season in Malaysia between November until February every year. Flooding usually happen at east coast of peninsular Malaysia with some of the road will be closed for small vehicle.
Oh nooo. You skipped the best part 🥲 Terengganu is where you really wanna go visit in Malaysia
Only to 'mat salleh' malaysian friendly. No to Rohingya, bangla, nepalese, indo, thai, black.
The roads and sights in Malaysia are just so beautiful!
Hello sister and brother you two happy me happy good job sister and brother 👍👍👍
Well can't do anything about the weather, maybe someday you'll get to visit terengganu & kelantan, hopefully when it's not flooding and raining haha. Good day and travel safe !!
I remember you turning up for work in your full motorbike gear … many years ago!
Absolutely beautiful especially the cave. Have you thought about selling photographs of your travels? As some of the places you visit are wonderful.
There is an invisible division among the society in Malaysia which only the locals can see. It is after decades of racists and bigotry policies implemented by the previous administrations that leave this society not as close to each others. You can see the by products thru the comments on the social media esp. when it involved race and religion.
Malaysian kid a.k.a Malaysian student they're so advance…bring motorcycle to the school especially 16 year old kids and for 17 or 18 year old they drive a car 😂😂😂
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤❤👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
👍👍👍👍👍
Highly recommend passing by Sekinchan, Teluk Intan, and Sitiawan before you reach Ipoh. Plenty of tourist attractions and good local food and seafood.
Love your video… can't wait for your next video. Hati hati memandu its raining season here in our country, safe travel… May Allah bless both of you.. jaga diri!
Malaysia has it all. Stunning countryside stunning beaches THE best food in the world Besides Italy and the Barracuda Chippy in Wakefield 😉 And definitely the nicest people you could wish to meet.
BEAUTIFUL quote at the start!!! Marianne's "enthusiasm" for going out in the deluge gave us both chuckles, as did the movie clip in the sponsor message. 🤣
The water buffalo were amazing! What is the symbiotic relationship with the egrets, I wonder? They sure do look interested in what the buffalo are doing.
What an amazing cave temple! 😱🤯 Well worth the effort it would seem from your reactions.
Might not want Smell-O-Vision for the sweaty vanlifer bits, but I sure did for the vanilla beans! 🤤
All the best, you guys!! ❤️❤️😎👍xx
Malaysia is NOT a safe place for underage unattended kids..there has been kidnappings/murder of kids where the killers are not caught!…some kids has been simply gone missing and NOT found!…a simple googling will reveal all truth!…and yes I’m a Malaysian!…take care
I don't think the painting in the cave is a flying Buddah, I think it is a chrysalis.
Hope the rain goes away soon.
Malaysians are just the best ♥️ my favourite place on earth
Food is a wonderful ice breaker for meeting new people as we all enjoy eating ❤
So are we as friendly ?
Some of the best travel vlogs I have seen have been on motorcycles, so I say go for it when all this is done.
I lived in Malaysia & married 1981..Lived on the beach in Balok, 10 mins or so from Kuantan near by to Cherating which had then just one basic restraurant with a few tables overlooking a prestine beach. We lived in a simple wooden house on stilts with balconies overlooking the beach & coconut trees. There were very few cars in those days transport was by taxis & rickity buses. There were also the dreaded logging trucks hauling huge trunks of wood, initiating the ongoing destruction of the jungle. No real tourism to speak off. Just occassional travellers passing through..Lived in Taman Negara for awhile..6 hours down the river on a clearing, just 2 couples & 2 infants..The nearest settlement a handful of kampong houses a 6 hour walk through serious jungle..Had my own hut with a mat on the floor overlooking the river & would fall asleep listening to all the Orangatans chatting among themselves..Returned to Kuantan in 2004..Did not recognize anything..The traffic was horrendous, the coconut plantations abutting the beach gone, the chickens running around freely not to be seen and no roaming caribou like the ones that wandered down the shoreline as the sun was setting every evening..There were no supermarkets in Kuantan..Dresses were tailor made! It was simple life ..My only neighbour could just be seen, loads of children that played on the beach their dad a fisherman. We had a well, no running water, an an outside loo! For me returning was a sad experience, a paradise lost. I believe much of Taman Negara has been destroyed & planted with the dreaded palm oil, terrible for the environment & animal life..We travelled around Malaysia in our VW, visited Cammeron highlands where we stayed in a lovely old colonial hotel..The jungle was still prolific then, just a few tea & coffee plantations. The biggest draw back for me was the heat!! It's always a challenge to return to places & witness total change! I do however miss the generous spirits of the Malays & of course the food!! But I like long cool walks & am fortunate to live in Suffolk, which on the whole has remained relativeltly peaceful & unspoilt. Have been fortunate to have travelled extensively & adventurously around the world, East & West over the last 45 years plus, so happy now to settle! Wishing you happy journeys!

That's why I love my fellow Malay. I'm Malaysian Chinese anyway. 🙂
Your vlog was just recommended for me. Funny how these algorithms work.
Just finished watching an excellent Netflix movie-documentary called "Man on the Run".
It's about the $11 billion stolen from Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund (1MDB) a decade ago, by a crook named Jho Low (still hiding in China).
As a Brit, ex van lifer and less successful vlogger, now living in Malaysia. I have the utmost respect for your journey. I dreamed of doing it, but in reality, I would never have the ability to do it.
My Wife and I would certainly kill each other.
We love Malaysia and its people and never want to leave.
Oh and Roti Canai and Kopi is the breakfast of champions.

Limestones get dissolved and creates these beautiful geological features.
Chris, let me tell you, YOU ARE A Half Geologist already; Naming the features as STALACTITES AND STALAGMITES,I was very impressed.
Just in case you do not know, the ones growing from the top towards the ground is called STALAGTITES, The opposite is STALAGMITES.
HINT IS THIS: THE word that has more "T" s in it is from the TOP towards the ground.
Stalamites does not have as many "T" s as you see.
Shut up Nick😅😅
Guys I LOVE you❤❤🇹🇷🇹🇷
