【4K】 UMBERTIDE Walking Tour Subtitled Guide

Umbertide (Fratta until 1863) is an Italian town of over 16,000 inhabitants in the province of Perugia in Umbria. Located in the upper valley of the Tiber, crossed by the Tiber itself and the Reggia stream (or Regghia), it has a characteristic historic center still surrounded by medieval walls in the stretches that line the waterways.

Welcome to Umbertide! Porta Caminella, also known as “Porta Borgo Inferiore” it used to mark the southern limit of the bulwark on the left bank of the Tiber. It also marked the beginning of the ” Strada del Piano” leading to Perugia

The wheels of Fratta’s famous smiths used to be placed there. They were driver by the water of Tiber and allowed precision work to be made thousands of sickles were sharpened through this system every year

San Bernardino Church Located on St. Francis Square, tradition has it that it was St. Bernardine himself, in 1426, who founded the Congregation of the Good Jesus there. It was built on an old oratory of the Disciples; tradition has it that it was St. Bernardine himself, in 1426, who founded the Congregation of the Good Jesus there. Consecrated in 1556, over time it underwent several interventions, to assume its present structure in 1768. It preserves, in the high altar, Muzio Fiori´s painting ” The Supper of the Apostles” (1602)

Church of St. Francis stands in the square of the same name and is the oldest church still standing in Umbertide. Construction began in the 1390s in what was called the ” lower village” of the castle of Fratta. A few years earlier the Friars Minor had built the churches of St. Francis in Città di Castello and Montone. Its architecture is typical of medieval churches of the mendicant orders: single nave, beamed roof, Gothic mullioned or triforiated windows, square or semicircular apse.

Until a few years ago it housed the Madonna and Child in Glory among Angels and Saints painted by Niccolò Circignani known as Pomarancio in 1577 and a wooden sculpture of St. Roch attributed to Romano Alberti known as Nero from 1528. The two works for conservation reasons were recently moved to the nearby church of Santa Croce now converted into a museum. The adjoining former convent is now home to the Municipal Historical Archives and the Civic Library

Church of the Holy Cross 1350 The church, after careful restoration by the city administration, was transformed into the Museum of Santa Croce in 1998. Among the most interesting works are, in addition to the altarpiece by Luca Signorelli, a painting by Pomarancio depicting the Madonna and Child in Glory among Angels and Saints (1577) and a wooden sculpture of St. Rocco attributed to Romano Alberti known as Nero from 1528, from the nearby church of San Francesco.

The Tiber (first called Albula in ancient times, then Thybris and finally Tiberis) is the main river of central and peninsular Italy; with 405 km of course it is the third longest Italian river (after the Po and Adige)

The city of Umbertide possesses in its territory, in museums, art collections, churches and historic buildings, some significant works of art of great Renaissance artists like Signorelli and Bernardino di Betto (Pinturicchio), as mannerist Nicholas Circignani (Pomarancio), as modern Corrado Cagli and other contemporary authors who have donated their work to the Collection of the Rock of Umbertide – Centre for Contemporary Art. In addition, Umbertide has other authors’ works, however, are less important than a cultural heritage of great historical value for the city.

The life of this town constantly comes alive with weekly or annual events in keeping with a tradition that preserves its historical and cultural roots. Fascinating is the market in the center of the town that takes place every Wednesday morning and draws people from all over the surrounding area. The warm season is full of exhibitions of various kinds, festivals, celebrations, mountain festivals and sporting events.

While ancient, the origin of the city of Umbertide is still uncertain. Some scholars believe it was founded by the Etruscans, others by the ancient people of the Umbrians. A widespread tradition has it that Umbertide was Cunicolo dell’Umbertide sotterraneafounded, under the name of “Pitulum” or “Oppidum Saepis,” by Roman soldiers from the legions of Consul Flaminius, who escaped the disastrous battle of Trasimeno (217 B.C.), and who would have scattered in disorderly flight through the mountains behind the lake, which they would then descend again to reach the Tiber valley.

The ancient “Pitulum” is said to have been destroyed by the Goths (thought to be the Ostrogoths, under the command of Totila, who neChurches of Santa Croce and San Francesco would later dismantle the walls). A well-known stone inscription on a wall of the stairs of the Town Hall reads, “DICTA FUI PITULUM DICORQUE NOMINE FRACTA ME QUONIAM FREGERE IMPIA GENS GOTHICA…” (I was called Pitulum and I am called by the name of Fratta since I was destroyed by the evil race of Goths…). The rebuilding of the ancient center, according to credited sources, took place in 790, by Ingilberto, Ugo and Benedetto, sons of Uberto (or Umberto) Ranieri, who allegedly rebuilt Fratta on the ruins of Pitulum

Church of St. Mary of the Reggia The temple dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, known as della Reggia, was built in the second half of the 16th century, near the stream of the same name, at the behest of the people of Umbria. The sacred building was built to accommodate a miraculous image frescoed inside a chapel that was located nearby.

The original building, octagonal in shape on the outside and circular on the inside, measures 22 meters in internal diameter with a total height of 40 meters. The interior of the dome, from the drum to the lantern, covers an area of 689 square meters.

Artwork: Virgin in Glory with Saints M. Magdalene, John the Baptist and Evangelist, Andrew, Francis, Apollonia, attributable to a ´500 Roman school (above the high altar); Ascension to Heaven with Saints Benedict, Romuald, Savino and Bishop plus Eucharistic symbolism, by POMARANCIO (Niccolò Circignani) from 1578 (above the organ stand) ; B.V. of Loreto with Saints Andrew Avellino and Ubaldo, by G. Alaboyna, from 1749 (above the rosary altar) ; Regular Cleric Saint with Christ presenting him the cross, by G. Alaboyna, dated 1749 (above the altar of St. Joseph).

The Tiber has always been of decisive importance, just think of the origin of the nickname “ranocchiari,” or the city’s coat of arms showing three towers on a three-arched bridge over the river. A landmark for settlements and a sort of barycenter for agriculture and other economic activities.

Matteotti Square The central square, connected to Piazza Mazzini by the short, narrow Via Stella, opens at the center of the walled core. There stands the 17th-century Town Hall, which was the aristocratic residence of the Counts Ranieri di Sorbello, with interior decorations, sculptural and pictorial, from the late 17th century.

Municipal Palace Until the 1700s, the north side of the modern Matteotti Square was lined with humble houses. Purchased by the Marquises Bourbon di Sorbello they were torn down to construct a building for their own use The aerial bombardment of April 25, 1944 and those that followed spared this building, which, however, was seriously damaged in many parts by other war events. In the ” main floor” the walls and ceilings are decorated with frescoes and the rooms contain valuable paintings. The building houses all municipal offices.

Ceramic works made by Umbertide elementary school children, inspired by the principles of the Italian Constitution We advanced to the Rock but unfortunately it was closed and we only saw it from the outside :/

THE FORTRESS It´s a superb medieval fortress that has always been a symbol of Umbertide. On its construction some authors state1374-1385, during the struggles between nobles and commoners. The fortress consists of a square tower of m. 7.60 in side and m.31.60 in height facing the Reggia stream. The solid walls are m.2.20 thick at the base. Toward the interior of the town two lower circular towers and a third square bastion are joined to the tower. Today the fortress has only one gate in the Piazza Fortebracci, but at one time it had another gate in the direction of the palace, called ” del soccorso.” , both equipped with drawbridges.

In 1394 Braccio Fortebracci da Montone (condottiere) was imprisoned in the Rocca. When the Pope returned to the Papal State, the Rocca was destined to serve the public prisons and this use continued until 1923. From this date it underwent some internal transformations and the two circular towers were covered in order to use the complex for civilian housing. It was inhabited until 1974.

Famous is the sport fishing along the Tiber where it has been the site of world championships several times Bastione Nord Ovest It was a defensive tower having its footing in the Tiber. It collapsed following the flood of 20th October 1620 wich badly damaged the dam South of the bridge Thanks for watching! 🙂

❓Curiosity:

✱ 📚The town ran into a serious moment of danger when the Tuscan army (1643) advanced into papal territory to assert the supremacy of the Lords of Florence over the Church State. The Florentines on several occasions attempted to occupy Fratta, but eventually, perhaps discouraged by a great flood of the Tiber, left the siege and retreated to Tuscany. The inhabitants attributed the grace of escaping the fury of the besieging troops to the ancient image of the Madonna venerated in the church of S. Maria della Reggia , and from then on the inscription F.O.V. placed under the civic coat of arms took on the meaning of “Fracta Oppidum Virginis.”

✱📚Some scholars believe it was founded by the Etruscans, others by the ancient people of the Umbrians. A widespread tradition has it that Umbertide was Cunicolo dell’Umbertide sotterraneafounded, under the name of “Pitulum” or “Oppidum Saepis,” by Roman soldiers from the legions of Consul Flaminius, who had escaped the disastrous battle of Trasimeno (217 B.C.), and who would have scattered in disorderly flight through the mountains behind the lake, which they would then descend again to reach the Tevere valley.
