Kogase Oe, Amakusa Town, Amakusa City Description of Kogase. One of the most well-known churches in Amakusa, Oe Cathedral, is located in Oe, Amakusa Town, Amakusa City. Approximately 2km south of there is the pristine coastline known as Sugamuta Coast.
Our destination this time is Kogase, a rocky reef floating about 2.4km west of the coast. Kogase is a rocky reef carved by the rough waves of the East China Sea. It is sometimes jointly called “Ogase/Kogase” along with “Ogase”, which floats approximately 1.1 km off the coast of nearby Nishibiratsubaki Park.
Both rock reefs are popular fishing spots for anglers. Tropical creatures such as stony coral and the sea hydra inhabit the nearby ocean floor.
Also, twice a year, for several days on the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, you can see the beautiful sight of the sun overlapping the Kogase and the sun setting between the reefs. The scene looks like a large whale sticking its mouth out of the sea and swallowing the sun.
