【2023京阪自由行🇯🇵】EP2 大阪一日遊【上】|大阪城公園、天守閣🏯、豐國神社⛩️、中之島|完整交通攻略|Osaka Travel|Osaka Castle|Nakanoshima

Hello, everyone! I’m currently at the Osaka Granvia Hotel above Osaka Station. I arrived at Kansai Airport last night and checked in here. Today’s one-day tour of Osaka will start from Umeda, Osaka. From the map, you can see Osaka Station and the Granvia Hotel to the south.

Since the hotel is connected to the station, transportation is quite convenient. Taking the elevator from the hotel to the 1st floor leads directly to Osaka Station without going outdoors. The hotel room is standard, but I really like the view outside the window.

Pulling open the curtains in the morning reveals the bustling Osaka Station. Today, we’ll visit some great places in Osaka. The first destination is Osaka Castle! First, we’ll walk to the subway station, Higashi-Umeda Station (東梅田). Then, take the Tanimachi Line to “Tanimachi Yonchome.” We just came from that direction (JR Osaka Station).

Near JR Osaka Station, there are three subway stations : Umeda, Higashi-Umeda, and Nishi-Umeda. In addition to Osaka Metro, there’s also Osaka Umeda Station for Hankyu and Hanshin Railway, totaling over five stations, all interconnected underground. From this map, you can see many railway lines intersecting in the Umeda area.

This is the route we’ll take later. We passed through a bookstore in the underground street on the way. Asahiya(旭屋書店), a chain bookstore. Here is Osaka Metro Higashi-Umeda Station(東梅田). I just realized I went to the wrong platform; the correct one is on the opposite side.

The platform for Tanimachi Yonchome (谷町四町目) Station is on the platform 1. It’s my first time in Osaka, and I’m not very familiar with the transportation routes. Departing from Higashi-Umeda, we arrived at Tanimachi Yonchome in less than 10 minutes.

Some Tanimachi Line trains only go to Kire-Uriwari(喜連瓜破); they don’t go all the way to the final stop, Yaominami(八尾南). However, both types of trains pass through Tanimachi Yonchome and Tennoji. For first-time visitors to Osaka, the railway system might seem complicated, but after a few rides, it becomes easy to navigate.

There are signs near the exit; just follow the signs. Keep walking along this road, and you’ll see Osaka Castle Park. On the way, we’ll pass by some iconic buildings. I’ll introduce them to you shortly. This is a statue of a Dutch chemist.

During the Bakumatsu period, he taught sciences in Nagasaki and Osaka. At that time, knowledge of sciences was limited in Japan, so he made significant contributions to the origin of scientific education in Japan. This area (Chuo Ward) has many government offices, and the Osaka Prefectural Government Office is also nearby.

It might be the political center of Osaka. This tall building is the NHK Osaka Broadcasting Station. It was completed in 2001, replacing the first broadcasting station that was in use since 1936. And on the left is the Osaka Prefectural Police Headquarters.

NHK Osaka Broadcasting Station, Osaka Historical Museum, and NHK Osaka Music Hall share the same building. In 2003, during the reconstruction of the police headquarters building, they discovered the moat that was filled in 1614. Don’t you think the front of the police headquarters is quite spectacular? Now we’ve entered Osaka Castle Park!

There’s an amusement ride here. If you don’t want to walk, you can consider taking this. The ferris wheel plays music while it operates; it’s very cute. Let’s continue walking. This is the moat of Osaka Castle, currently used as a reservoir. This is South Outer Moat, and “堀(hori)” here means moat.

Having an “outer moat” implies there’s an “inner moat.” Next, we’ll pass through the front gate, Otemon. This gate is wide enough for a carriage to pass through. It’s been about 20 minutes since we walked from the station to here. We still have some way to go to reach the main keep.

The earlier amusement ride. The gate on the left in front is the final gate we’ll pass through, Sakuramon(桜門). The torii gate on the right is for Hōkoku Shrine. Now, we can clearly see Osaka Castle Keep! The Osaka Castle Keep we see now was reconstructed in 1930 using steel and concrete.

The first Osaka Castle was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1583. But it underwent multiple damages and reconstructions. The current keep’s location is different from the original. Next, we’ll go to the ticket booth on the right to buy admission tickets. Buying tickets is done at automated machines, available in multiple languages.

Oops, I placed it in the wrong spot. Haha, I just noticed it’s the exit details. We’ve successfully entered! There’s a long line for the elevator. Does taking the stairs take a long time? Maybe walking down the stairs is better. Haha. Feels like the elevator will take a while. We’ve reached the 8th floor.

The 8th floor is the observation deck of the keep. Wow! The view is amazing! Although there’s a protective net, it doesn’t obstruct the view. Anyway, let’s take a look around! Now, this direction is the west. NHK Osaka Broadcasting Station and the adjacent Osaka Prefectural Police Headquarters are clearly visible.

And this is the front (south) Honmaru Plaza. The direction we walked from earlier. In the distance, you can see Osaka’s tallest building—Abeno Harukas. Did you all see it? Because it’s a bit far, I didn’t notice it at that moment. Lastly, the east. The oval-shaped building is Osaka Castle Hall.

Back to the north side where we started. Next, let’s explore each floor~ The 7th floor mainly introduces the life of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Most other floors don’t allow photography, so I’ll leave that for you to experience.

The exhibitions inside are very rich, and I learned a lot about the history of the Warring States period. These exhibitions, centered around Osaka, cover many historical events. I recommend doing a bit of research on the history of the Japanese Warring States period before coming. It’ll help you better understand the explanations.

Near Osaka Castle Keep, there’s a shopping mall called Miraiza. This building has a historic feel; its predecessor was the headquarters of the Imperial Japanese Army’s 4th Division. But now, it’s a complex mall with food and souvenir shops. Leaving Osaka Castle, we’re now heading to Toyokuni Shrine across the street.

The weather has improved a lot compared to earlier! Next, we’ll visit Hōkoku Shrine(豊國神社) inside Osaka Castle. Hōkoku Shrine is dedicated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi(豊臣 秀吉).
