Karnak Temple, Luxor, Egypt. This temple left a more impactful impression on me than the pyramids. The size of this place is hard to convey, and the history within these walls is incredible.
Construction at this temple complex began during the reign of Senusret I in what is known in ancient Egypt as the Middle Kingdom (around 2000–1700 BCE) and continued into the Ptolemaic Kingdom (305–30 BCE). That’s over 1500 years of building and adding onto this incredible temple. This makes the temple around 4,000 years old, which is mind boggling.

These pillars were covered in brightly coloured hieroglyphs. Now, a few thousand years later, the harsh sun and eroding sand has made it so only the carvings remain. In certain places in the temple where the ceiling is intact, you can get a glimpse of the ancient colour and begin to imagine how this place might have looked.
