Floating buoyantly in the saltwater lake was so much fun and I loved to see the otherworldly tufa structures seen here.
Mono Lake’s tufa towers extend to the sky, pointing to the Milky Way. Light painting for several seconds reveals the tufa on a dark night that would otherwise be in shadow. I used a standard household flashlight with a warming gel over it to enhance the naturally warm color of the tufa. The special item – an air sickness bag over the flashlight to create a softbox effect so the light is not as strong.
I chose the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens at 17 mm to get a broad view of the tufa and Milky Way. I selected a wide-open aperture at f/2.8, then a shutter speed of 25 seconds, and ISO 6400.”
