This race has been hosted annually for nearly 20 years by the Ida Lewis Yacht club (Newport, RI) in which a variety of sailboats set out for an overnight race taking place between Montauk and Buzzards Bay. Having watched the weather forecast for a few days ahead of the start, I decided to charter a helicopter to capture the epic conditions from a dramatic perspective. (Not to mention avoiding an uncomfortable and wet ride on a chase boat.) Shooting from a helicopter is wonderful, but it’s even better when you have a skilled pilot who’s willing to fly low over big waves and occasionally below sailboat masts. I have been flying with Jeff Codman, chief pilot at Newport Helicopter Tours, for over 20 years, and with some persuasion, he’s plenty brave. I shot this with a Canon EOS R with the RF70-200 F2.8 IS L USM lens set at 172mm, the ISO set at 800, the F stop at F8, and a fast shutter speed of 1/2500th to freeze the action. For these assignments, I carry three Canon EOS Rs with the following lenses: RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM, RF70-200 F2.8 IS L USM and the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4X (using the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R).”
