Do I have access to natural light; a huge open window, the perfect patch of sunlight? If not, is there somewhere that I can place a light to create the look that I want? Looking for light, first and foremost, has led me to some non-traditional locations for portraits. For example, this was taken under an overhang above a subway platform!
I placed my subject right before the light fell off into shadow underneath the structure. This provided wonderful natural light while also giving me a dark, dramatic background. Never be afraid to follow the light into unusual locations – you never know what you may find!”
