Photo by #CanonExplorerOfLight @dorn.bruce: “The phrase, ‘Jack of all trades, master of none’ is a lightly-veiled insult – the implication being that a Generalist can’t be as capable as a Specialist. As a loud-and-proud Photographic General Practitioner, I cheerfully protest! My lifelong pursuit of commercial photography and filmmaking has benefited mightily from the image creation equivalent of cross-training. I pride myself on attacking a wide variety of photographic challenges with equal enthusiasm and I know I’m a better and more well-rounded artist for the effort.

It turns out that the actual quote is a compliment, ‘Jack of all trades, master of none, is oftentimes better than a master of one.’

Agreed! Every photographic genre I have investigated has inspired the creative exploration of another. My tools, modern hybrid cameras and lighting, have proven perfectly appropriate for them all. This image is from a recent commercial assignment that tested my versatility. The challenge was to produce engaging imagery in six different photographic genres: Studio, Adventure, Editorial, Narrative, Action, and Portraiture. This image was in the category of Editorial.

A fine hand with the rope, Arizona cowboy Humberto makes a traditional western living by tending cattle. His joy comes from entertaining school children with the same lariat. Is he a jack of all trades… or the quiet master of many? Whichever, I can only aspire to achieve Humberto’s level of mastery… and bliss.”
