@lindsayadler_photo’s journey to becoming a #CanonExplorerOfLight: “When someone asks me about my most influential images, my mind considers two very different types of ‘influences.’
First, which images do I feel influenced the most people or became the most widespread in their reach? Second, I must consider which images most influenced my own work, path, and career. Often the two are not the same!
Approximately 7 years ago I set out on a personal project to explore the color red in all its facets. I found red to be a repeated theme that I wanted to explore and I decided to ‘assign’ myself a project to dive deeper. I wanted to play around with red in as many ways as possible; red gels, red headpieces, red fabric, red styling, red makeup, the emotional connotations of red, and all the different ways I could integrate red into an image. Every single month I made time to create at least one image for this project and collaborated with other artists to make images with impact.
This particular image was very early on in my ‘Seeing Red’ project, and it is where I really felt my personal style coming together. Everything in the image was carefully controlled from the styling, color, model choice, makeup, lighting and tonalities. It came to really represent my vision and style, and got me excited to continue the red exploration.
It was shortly after making this photograph that I became a Canon Explorer of Light. I was coming into my own as an educator, a photographer and as a person, and this image helps to symbolize this very important and influential moment in my life.
This shot was taken with 4 strobes; two lighting a red background, one lighting the subject’s face from above, and another as a subtle fill from below. Each light, each pixel, each piece of makeup and styling was carefully considered and I love how it still represents my vision many years later.”
