Photo by #CanonExplorerOfLight @nataliekeyssar: “I’m Natalie Keyssar, a documentary photographer based in Brooklyn, NY. My work focuses on inequality, the intersection of civil unrest and daily life, and youth culture, in the US and Latin America.

This photograph was made in Caracas, Venezuela, one of my favorite places in the world, where I’ve worked for years on a long-term project focusing on the daily lives of women there. It shows Katherine, a professional cheerleader, holding her daughter on the roof of her family’s home as the sun rises over her barrio. Venezuela is a complex place, and my time there has taught me, and changed me, more than any other experience in my life. I like to consider all of the people I photograph my teachers, and myself a permanent student. I learned a lot from Katherine about grace, motherhood, and using her talent to not only survive but thrive amid difficult circumstances, so it seemed fitting that the complexity and beauty she showed me was mirrored in the sunrise and cityscape in this image.
