Xoai is a Vietnamese trans person. She is a poet, essayist, editor and educator. Her work often explores the roots of violence and small intimacies. The goal of this image was to create an elevated, editorial beauty image. I wanted to create a shot that was more than just a pretty face with pretty makeup, since Xoai is so much more than that! I purposefully used a long shutter speed (1/4 second) while moving my camera around. This is called ‘dragging the shutter’. This allowed me to use a strobe to freeze the face while allowing some of the ambient light to record and create ghostly blurs. I used hard light on Xoai’s face to help sculpt the features and create narrow slices of light.” 🏳️🌈
