“For this portrait of volleyball player Jessica Gaffney, I used one of my favorite lighting set-ups for shooting swimmers, boxers, and any athlete whose competition gear shows a lot of their skin. This is a single light set-up with the flash head in a large modifier directly behind the subject. In this case, a 60” light with a single white diffuser. The 1000 watt per second strobe was powered down to 400 watts per second (this set-up does not require a lot of power).

Two 6’ x 6’ white reflector panels were placed on either side of the subject angled towards the camera position, with an additional 3’ x 6’ panel over the top. The final effect is a soft light that wraps around the subject. Moving the subject closer to and farther from the rear light source allows you to control the amount of wrap and softness.

Again, this set-up works best on bare skin. Baggier uniforms like a baseball or football jersey do not allow the light to wrap. This is a simple setup that can be created with almost any type of lighting gear and reflectors. The outside may not always look pretty, but the results can be stunning.”
