I grew up in NC, and it’s meant a great deal to me to be able to focus on a place so close to home when so much of my work has been abroad for many years. Robeson is a really beautiful, complicated, diverse place that’s taught me a lot. Tragically, since I’ve been working there, its been hit by two ‘100 year’ hurricanes, that each time resulted in catastrophic flooding all over the county, including in the county seat of Lumberton. Many families in Lumberton were already struggling, and the flooding has been absolutely devastating. I photographed the Lumberton High School JV football team at one of their first practices after the second storm, Hurricane Florence, had devastated their community. At the end of practice, they knelt to pray, and I was moved by this moment of faith and resilience from a group of kids who have already been through way too much in their young lives. These days I look at this picture, and think about what a luxury it was to be able to put your hand on your teammates shoulder to pray.”
