It has been a real honor to get to know Jay Hill this winter. Jay is a renaissance west Texas farmer who defies boundaries. To start with, he did something almost nobody does: He went IN to farming in his 30s from a traditional working career. Farms are places that most people are quick to leave these days, due to unstable commodity markets, climate volatility and endless hours of work.
Jay is committed to sustainable agriculture. He and his team raise a dozen crops and livestock over two states in west Texas and New Mexico. The farms grow everything from cotton to chili peppers, from lettuce to alfalfa — he even has a commercial vineyard for good measure.
I had the joy of photographing and filming with Jay this winter in his hometown of Dell City, Texas for a Walls Outdoor Goods (@wallsoutdoorgoods) workwear campaign. Jay is a social media icon in the agriculture world and an ambassador for the Walls clothing brand.
I captured Jay at dusk in front of his cotton pickers, just as his team was wrapping up the day’s harvest. Jay is committed to sustainable cotton farming and to revitalizing American clothing manufacturing.
Jay speaks around the world, discussing new agriculture techniques. ‘Climate change is already upon us,’ he says. ‘If you can’t prove that what you’re doing is bettering the environment, you’re going to feel the repercussions.’
Learn more about Jay at @hilljay45 — and he’s also featured in countless articles and podcasts online. He’ll change the way you think about modern agriculture. Thanks, Jay, for being such a proud and honorable voice for farming!” Camera: #Canon EOS-1D X Mark II
