This Doesn’t Look Like China… (But It Is)

We found one of China’s most unexpected cities—just 25 minutes from Shanghai and it completely changed how we see this country.
Welcome to Suzhou, often called the “Venice of China,” where ancient canals, stone bridges, and quiet alleyways create a side of China most travelers never see. While millions visit Shanghai every year, very few make the short trip here and that might be a mistake.

In this vlog, we explore Suzhou’s hidden waterways, historic streets, and peaceful atmosphere to see if it really lives up to the “Venice” comparison… or if it’s something even more unique.

Is this China’s most underrated city? And why isn’t anyone talking about it?

If you’re planning a trip to China or just curious about places most tourists skip, this is one you don’t want to miss.

  1. Suzhou’s canal system is one of the largest man-made networks in the world, and it honestly felt like a completely different world from the city.

Would you make the trip out here, or stay in Shanghai?

  2. I’m actually shocked how beautiful this Chinese version of Venice. It’s a unique touch of their own identity that also kind of replicates Venice, Italy. Really cool.

  3. Don't be afraid of the security cameras, they are protecting good guys and scare the bad guys, if you are not going to anything illegal, then relax😁

  4. Becareful if you not know chinese alphabet when buy ticket online in english, there is other city with same name but way in the north 😂. There is video on youtube about it.

  5. your title is totally misleading, The SuZhou city is the most authentic Chinese city, the architecture and absolutely Chinese!

  6. Then WTF China looks like. Is China supposed to look like your fleaking Western propaganda of a collapsing backward China that you people are inhaling daily from your Western media and politicians? What you see in Suzhou is not unique in China and Suzhou does not look like Venice and Venice does not look like Suzhou, Buddy. Don't be condescending. Suzhou to be compared to Venice is an insult.

  7. Suzhou is famous for many things, its known as one of China's most beautiful traditional cities (alongside Hangzhou), the "Oriental Venice" for its water towns, a home to several UNESCO classical gardens, and Its GDP per capita is among the highest in China.

  8. Wow, Suzhou looks absolutely stunning! I never imagined a city in China could feel so different from the usual images we see. The mix of modern architecture and traditional charm really shows how diverse and unexpected China can be. Definitely a place I’d love to visit someday🥰🥰

  9. 3:12 That statue is of Fan Zhongyan, a native of Suzhou. He was a statesman and writer of China’s Northern Song Dynasty. In his essay “Memorial of Yueyang Tower,” he wrote that one should “not be pleased by the gain or loss of external things or by favorable or unfavorable circumstances, nor saddened by personal gains and losses or by hardships encountered.” He also expressed his political ideal: “To be the first to worry about the affairs of the world and the last to enjoy its happiness.” This represents the highest political ideal and sense of responsibility toward the country in the Confucian scholar-official tradition.
