Ban Gioc Waterfall might be the most beautiful waterfall in Vietnam.
Deep in Northern Vietnam’s Cao Bằng Loop we ride a rugged Russian jeep to the spectacular Ban Gioc Waterfall, one of Southeast Asia’s most breathtaking natural wonders.
This is Day 2 of our Cao Bằng Loop adventure as we travel deep into Cao Bằng Province, near the Chinese border. Our Russian jeep winds through towering limestone karst mountains, remote farming villages, and dramatic mountain passes before arriving at the emerald Quây Sơn border river and the magnificent Detien Falls.
Along the way we explore the newly opened Trà Lĩnh Pass Tunnel, carved through the sinkhole-ridden karst landscape of the UNESCO Non Nước Cao Bằng Global Geopark. We climb to the Trúc Lâm Pagoda viewpoint for panoramic views over the falls, venture into the mysterious Hang Thần Hổ cave, and discover hidden mountain trails overlooking rivers, farmland and limestone peaks.
Ban Gioc Waterfall spans nearly 300 metres across the Vietnam–China border, making it the largest transnational waterfall in Southeast Asia. Rafts from both countries drift through the mist at the base of the cascades while limestone cliffs rise above in one of the most spectacular landscapes in northern Vietnam.
This remote region of Vietnam offers an authentic glimpse into daily life in the northern highlands — buffalo grazing in the fields, farmers harvesting canna root used for traditional glass noodles, and quiet mountain villages far from the crowds.
