Azerbaijan is more than what you imagine
Azerbaijan is more than what you imagine. It’s a feeling that changes with every place you discover, every region revealing a new landscape, a new story, and a new reason to fall in love with the country.
In Shamakhi, one of Azerbaijan’s oldest cities, centuries of history unfold across the landscape. Once the capital of the powerful Shirvanshah state during the Middle Ages, the city carries a rich Silk Road heritage. Today, traces of that past remain in sites like the ruins of Narin-Gala Fortress, Gulustan Fortress, and Bughurt Fortress, standing on remote mountain peaks reclaimed by nature. The hilltop Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleum adds another layer of history, where members of the Shirvan Khanate and the celebrated poet Mirza Alakbar Sabir are laid to rest.
The landscapes of Khizi surprise visitors with colourful mountains and the sacred peak of Mount Beshbarmag, rising dramatically above the Caspian coast.
In the green highlands of Gadabay, you can discover the ancient Mahrasa Temple, a fascinating monument that reflects the region’s diverse cultural and spiritual past. The town’s history is also tied to the German Siemens brothers, who introduced modern copper mining in the late 19th century, and if you venture 30–40 kilometres into the mountains with a local guide, you can admire the spectacular arched bridges that once carried their narrow-gauge railway through the rugged terrain.
High in the Caucasus Mountains, the ancient village of Khinalig stands as one of the country’s highest settlements and a recognised site on the UNESCO World Heritage List, preserving a unique cultural landscape shaped by centuries of mountain life.
In Gabala, vibrant nature and blooming lavender fields paint the landscape in beautiful shades of purple.
The charming city of Shaki welcomes visitors with cobblestone streets and architectural treasures like the stunning Shaki Khan’s Palace, part of the historic centre of Shaki inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Each region reveals a different side of the country –mesmerising, beautiful, and full of moments that give you butterflies wherever you go.
This is Azerbaijan.
