⁴ᴷ Kagoshima: Kanoya City (鹿児島県: 鹿屋市) – Japan Walking Tour (March, 2026)

I’ve decided to head west in search of warmer weather and travel all the way around Kyushu. After driving to Osaka and taking the ferry to Shin-Moji, I’m continuing my journey through the island.

I’ve arrived in Kanoya City, the largest hub on the Osumi Peninsula in Kagoshima. Kanoya is unique for being a “city without a railway” since its last line was abolished about 40 years ago. With a population of nearly 100,000, it is the most populous city in Japan (excluding Okinawa) without a train station. Exploring a city that has flourished without a rail or airport hub felt like a unique urban adventure.

I started my walk from the City Hall, located right next to the site of the former Kanoya Station. Heading toward the shopping arcade with its sheltered sidewalks, I eventually reached a lively district filled with local eateries. Seeing the staff standing outside greeting passersby gave me a real sense of the local hospitality and energy during this walk after sunset.
