Ikebukuro is one of Tokyo’s largest and most vibrant urban centers. Located in the northwestern part of Tokyo in Toshima, it is famous for its huge railway station, department stores, pop-culture attractions, and lively entertainment districts. Along with Shinjuku and Shibuya, Ikebukuro is considered one of the three major commercial hubs on Tokyo’s west side.
At the center of the area is Ikebukuro Station, one of the busiest railway stations in the world. It is served by several major train lines. Because of this connectivity, millions of people pass through Ikebukuro every day.
In recent years Ikebukuro has become an important center of anime and manga culture, especially for female fans. The area around Sunshine City hosts many themed shops and attractions, including Animate Ikebukuro Main Store, one of the largest anime stores in the world themed cafés and character stores. Because of this, Ikebukuro is sometimes called the “female counterpart to Akihabara.”
Ikebukuro is closely associated with owls. The name “Ikebukuro” sounds similar to the Japanese word fukurō (owl), so the bird became a local mascot. One famous meeting spot is the owl statue Ikefukuro Statue near the station.
