I’ve decided to head west in search of warmer weather and travel all the way around Kyushu. After driving to Osaka and taking the ferry to Shin-Moji, I’m continuing my journey south.

I’ve finally arrived in Kumamoto. At the station, I was greeted by the iconic Kumamon and a local event mascot named Maio. While the station area was quiet late at night, I decided to walk to the main downtown hub—the famous Kamitori, Shimotori, and Shinshigai arcades. Though it’s quite a distance from the station, the presence of other night owls made the long trek feel quite manageable.

Once I reached the downtown arcades, I was stunned by the sheer energy of the Saturday night crowds. Even compared to other cities with populations in the 700,000s, like Niigata or Okayama, Kumamoto’s nightlife feels exceptionally vibrant and dense. It was an exhilarating walk after sunset, capturing the powerful pulse of one of Kyushu’s most lively cities.
