Battle of Stubica 🇭🇷 – The Rebellion Continues ⚔️
Join me as I travel back to 1573 to witness the legendary Peasant Revolt (Seljačka buna) in Croatia! In this video, I’m taking you to Donja Stubica for the spectacular annual reenactment of the Battle of Stubica, the decisive moment of the historic uprising led by Matija Gubec.
I started my journey in the peaceful village of Hižakovec, visiting the birthplace of Matija Gubec, then we are going to see legendary Gubec linden tree in Gornja Stubica — the only living witness to the rebellion.
The medieval fair in Donja Stubica buzzed with authentic crafts, local cuisine, jugglers, and live folk music, drawing thousands to immerse in 16th-century Zagorje life before the main event.
And the main event was a reenactment of the Battle of Stubica, in which hundreds of peasants armed with scythes charged the noble cavalry in dramatic choreography, with cannon fire, smoke and choreographed clashes, reliving the fateful battle of 1573.
