Perched about 650 meters above sea level, Masca is one of the most spectacular villages in Tenerife. The settlement lies at the entrance of the famous Masca Gorge, a deep volcanic canyon carved over thousands of years through the rugged mountains of the Teno massif.
For centuries, Masca remained incredibly isolated. Until the late 20th century, the village could only be reached on foot or by mule along steep mountain paths, which is why it was often called “the lost village of Tenerife.”
The area also carries a sense of mystery. Local legends say that pirates once used the hidden ravines and nearby coastline as secret refuges while navigating the Atlantic trade routes. Whether myth or history, the dramatic setting of Masca makes these stories easy to imagine.
