Discover the Best Medieval Town in Europe – Rothenburg | Romantic Charm in the Heart of Germany
We have taken all of our photos and video on Rothenburg ob der Tauber and created one final video as a tribute to the best medieval town in Europe! I hope you enjoy watching the video as much as we enjoy this incredible medieval town!
In this episode of Searching for History, Erin, my brother Sterlin and I, visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany. Rothenburg is a town in the Franconia region of Bavaria. It was a free imperial city from the late Middle Ages to the beginning of the 19th century. During Rothenburg’s height, from around 1100 to 1400, it was an important stop along Europe’s trade routes. It declined after occupation and sacking during the Thirty Years War, which occurred between 1618 and 1648. It is famous for its well-preserved medieval old town and its intact town wall. It is a highlight on the Romantic Road through southern Germany. In this episode we will walk around Rothenburg’s old town, visit Rothenburg’s Market Square, take a quick look at our favorite place to stay, Pension Elke, visit St. Jakobs Kirche with its beautiful northern renaissance altar pieces, visit the Medieval Crime Museum, walk the town wall, take a look at the Franciscan church, climb the town hall tower, take a look at our favorite restaurant, “Hell.” At the end, we experience Rothenburg at night. Join us as we visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Gorgeous! Goslar is another contender for best medieval German town but it doesn't have the walls and castle.
