京都の代わりは?金沢と高山で4日間を過ごす方法

Kanazawa and Takayama are often referred to as ‘Little Kyoto’, thanks to their beautifully preserved historic districts. And if you’re looking to venture beyond Japan’s Golden Triangle of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, this region might just be the perfect addition to your itinerary.

In this video, I’m sharing how we spent four days in Kanazawa and Takayama. From wandering the historic Samurai District in the rain, to gold leaf ice cream and fresh sushi at Omicho Market, to Kenroku-en Garden (one of Japan’s three most beautiful gardens).

We then travelled the scenic route to Takayama via Inami, Gokayama and Shirakawa-go — exploring traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, trying our hand at washi paper-making and discovering centuries-old woodcarving traditions along the way.

Takayama itself quickly became a highlight of our trip. Morning markets filled with Hida beef nigiri and warm red bean croissants, sashiko textile studios, handcrafted wooden kitchenware, cosy cafés and sukiyaki in the cold.

If you’re planning your first trip to Japan — or returning and wanting to explore beyond the busiest cities — I hope this itinerary gives you a little inspiration.

This video is part of my Japan series from a recent three-week trip, so don’t miss my guides for Tokyo, Kyoto and Shibu Onsen.
