I Stayed at a 170-Year-Old Japanese Hot Spring Inn Where Cats Live 🐈 | Onsen retreat

This time, I stayed for several nights at Tajima Honkan, a 170-year-old traditional “touji” (therapeutic hot spring retreat) in Kagoshima where cats live freely.
In Myoken Onsen, many ryokan are home to cats. It is said that this small hot spring town has one of the highest “cat densities” in Japan.
I walked slowly with the cats and spent quiet hours in my room, gazing at the river flowing outside.
At night, in the dining hall warmed by floor heating from the hot spring, the cats gathered around. While absentmindedly watching them, I was gently welcomed into conversations with other guests.
For generations, people have come here to rest and heal in the mineral waters — and that quiet culture of “touji” still remains today.
Strong mineral baths, slow air, and cats living gently within the rhythm of this old hot spring town.
