In this Austria travel vlog, we explore the breathtaking Wolfgangsee Lake region in the heart of the Salzkammergut, one of the most beautiful areas in the Austrian Alps.
Our day begins with an unforgettable ride on the historic Schafbergbahn, the famous cog railway that climbs all the way to the top of Mount Schafberg. From the summit, we’re rewarded with panoramic views over the turquoise lakes of the Salzkammergut and the surrounding Alpine peaks, easily some of the most stunning views of our entire trip to Austria.
After descending from Schafberg, we spend time discovering the charming lakeside town of St. Wolfgang, wandering its picturesque streets and enjoying a peaceful walk along the shores of Lake Wolfgang (Wolfgangsee). This area feels incredibly calm and authentic, offering some of the most serene moments of our time in Austria.
We also visit a 500-year-old local organic farm to experience a different side of the region before ending the day across the lake in the beautiful village of St. Gilgen, another hidden gem in the Salzkammergut.

Wow Austria is such a beautiful place, lots to see and do. The lake that your at is so beautiful and it looks quiet and peaceful! The hotel is quite nice as well by the looks of it.@ 3:58, @ 4:02 and @ 4:08 these views are perfect for a postcard beautiful. The mountain train might have been expensive but I think it would be worth it. Thank u for taking me along with u as Austria is beautiful and would love to visit one day
A very beautiful region of Austria. I found a 1979 New York Times article about where you were that includes these observations: "The boat stops at Ferienhort ; the bungalow‐and‐boarding‐house resort of Reid, and then the first of two stops in St. Wolfgang. This landing is called St. Wolfgang Schafbergbahnhof, for right across the road is the start of a steamengine cogwheel railway that runs up to the top of the Schafberg (5,682 feet) in 40 minutes. The fare is $7.85 round trip; children under 15 half price; Eurailpasses honored. It is a safe, slightly dizzying ride above the lake with so many mountains in view that they begin to blur into pastoral sketches.
As the train, pushed from behind by a little engine, is propelled past the intermediate stop of Schafbergalpe, it climbs at such a cockeyed tilt that one could be viewing the landscape from a circling airplane. The Duke of Windsor climbed the Schafberg in a record two and a half hours when he came to the Wolfgangsee in 1937 shortly after his abdication, but no matter how you get to the summit, a view of 13 lakes and at least as many mountains, including the Berchtesgaden Alps, awaits you on a clear day."
