Belgium: Brussels to Bruges – The Best Preserved Medieval City In Europe?

Bruges (Brugge) is widely considered the best-preserved medieval city in Europe.
We are taking you on an unforgettable journey starting in the Capital of Belgium, Brussels, where we have just 2 hours to explore a few of its medieval sights. Then it’s onto a train to get us to Bruges for our ultimate medieval weekend escape!

In this video, we’ll explore Bruges and use the city museum pass to visit just some of the 13 attractions available on the card. This card allows visitors to see the history, art, and monuments that shaped this medieval city.

The historical significance of Bruges cannot be overstated. During the 12th to 15th centuries, it was the commercial capital of Northern Europe. Because the city’s economy slowed down just as other cities were modernising, its medieval heart was essentially “frozen in time.” This stroke of historical luck means it is now widely considered the best-preserved medieval city on the continent. Walking through the Markt (Market Square) and gazing up at the 83-meter-tall Belfry, which we’ll be able to climb in our video. The city’s UNESCO World Heritage status is well-deserved, as every cobblestone tells a story of wealth, art, and resilience.

Beyond being the best-preserved medieval city, Bruges is a feast for the senses. You’ll indulge in some of the world’s finest chocolates, crisp Belgian frites, and legendary local waffles. But the real magic happens when the day-trippers leave. We highly recommend staying late for a serene night walk. As the sun dips, the city lights reflect off the quiet canals, creating a peaceful, cinematic ambience that feels entirely your own.

Join us to be inspired to plan your own weekend trip to Bruges and Brussels!

  1. We probably didn't get all the pronunciations correct in this video. We don't speak the local dialect, but we did our best!

  2. Another top drawer video lads, well done. May I ask…are the drone shots from royalty free on line libraries?

  3. I love Bruges. Stopped there for about 24 hours on a biking trip in 2018. I didn't get to do too much, but I did enjoy the flea market on the canal and a beer tasting and quiz in a bike shop. I also enjoyed a choir of nuns practicing in a chapel.

  4. So nice to see the city again. Once going there, I had to return time and time again. Great place to take visitors to Europe. You all did a lovely job showing us around.

  5. Lovely video Simon and Will, you certainly had perfect weather. Visited Bruges many years ago as a tour of WW1 Belgian battlesites and museums. (Have some great recommendations if you are intersted for Ypres area). The thumbnail you have chosen is the same vantage point that I took the perfect night shot an is enlarged to 36×24 inch stretched canvas. The turret part of the building the right of the canal is the Duc de Burgoyne hotel where we stayed and the white section was its restaurant which was fabulous.

  6. Thank you so much guys wonderful to see all the sites, and very informative , and you both are definitely sweet on the eyes! ❤ luv your vids wess in manitoba Canada 🇨🇦 ❤️ 😊

  7. Prop up the bar indeed…it did not fall over while you were there.

This is a great tour of a beautiful couple of cities. Thank you.

  8. Jeez this was SO enjoyable. Such an awesome place. Sorry you got cut short of sleep…

  9. What a wonderful city ❤ magnificent gothic architecture. I'm literally speechless by the medieval beauty, attraction & history. Perfect video to start my day & i admire the place you chose to travel & share, such a top quality video & very fascinating😊 thank u Simon and Will (this video should be top recommended on YouTube ) its master a masterpiece how you shoot & edit the video to pitch perfect 👌👌👏👏 I'm gonna watch again, greetings to you both.

(I would hype your videos countless times to spread wide but its a shame only 3 times )

  10. Spent a great week here about 20-something years ago. A really enjoyable place to look through and domicile for tours around South-West Belgium.

  11. "The Bells! The Bells!" They certainly are deafening! We were up there on the day of the Procession of the Holy Blood and got the full treatment! Staying in the city is by far the best experience. Surprising how calm the place gets after all the Bus Tours and day-trippers have gone. The crush these days in high season must be horrific.

  12. Nothing to do with your video at all, they are very well done, but what i really miss in this ex merchant harbour city are old ships, vessels, sailingboats and so on in the channels and harbour of Brugge…..
Wouldtn’t make it so mutch more authentic ???

(been several times to Brugge myself but that was way back in the 1980’s and 90’s…..)

  13. What a great video! We loved visiting Bruges and you showed us that we still need to go back and see more! We enjoyed sitting in the outdoor cafes and people watching as we enjoyed some great beer. You walked past quite a few of the cafes where we did that. Loved the longer video as well. And, In Bruges is a great movie! Cheers!

  14. Дякую вам, панове, за дуже цікаве відео. Колись була у Брюгге туристкою на кілька годин. І справді дуже красиве и незвичайне старовинне місто.
Музика для прогулянки вечірнім Брюгге була прекрасною!
    😍😍😍🤝🤝🤝💕💕💕🇺🇦😮

  15. Thank you for a wonderful tour of Bruges , what a beautiful well preserved city . I will never get to see it in person , but I really feel this was the next best thing tagging along with such charming and experienced travellers !

  16. I’ve been enjoying your videos for quite some time and just want to say how nice it is to hear from Will more often. Always looking forward to your next trip. ❤️🇨🇦

  17. Yes, yes, everything is very beautiful and seemingly calm and touristy, with squares, neo-Gothic buildings and older monuments and other fairytale things… But wait, according to the press, "Belgium is basically a narco-state, top Antwerp judge warns," not without the problems of corruption and violence that usually accompany this business. Do you like cocaine or marijuana? In Bruges you will find these goods without difficulty as well.😂😂😂
