I Found the Most Isolated Village in the Swiss Alps… And It’s Breathtaking!

Welcome to Foroglio, a tiny stone village hidden deep in Val Bavona, in Switzerland’s Italian speaking Canton Ticino. In this immersive walking tour, we wander through rustic lanes lined with traditional stone cottages, soak up the quiet mountain atmosphere, and follow the sound of rushing water to the Cascata di Foroglio, a powerful waterfall that plunges around 110 metres into the valley below.
Planning a trip? Late spring through early autumn is the sweetest spot, when the valley is lush, the walking paths are clear, and the waterfall flow is often at its most dramatic. If you want a longer nature escape, Foroglio is also a classic gateway into the wild Val Calnégia, with trails leading deeper into forests, rivers, and alpine scenery.

Getting here is part of the adventure. The easiest route by public transport is via Locarno, then PostBus connections into the Maggia and Bavona valleys, typically bus 315 to Bignasco and bus 333 onward to Foroglio, and it is smart to check timetables because connections can be limited. If you are travelling around Switzerland, the Swiss Travel Pass can be great value since it includes unlimited travel by train, bus, and boat on the Swiss Travel System network.
For the best photos and the calmest vibe, aim for early morning or golden hour, and consider visiting after rain if you want extra waterfall power.
