⁴ᴷ Kochi: Tosashimizu City (高知県: 土佐清水市) – Japan Walking Tour (January, 2026)
I’ve decided to take an off-season trip back to my hometown in Kobe, using it as a starting point for a journey all the way around Shikoku. Traveling from Takamatsu through Kochi City, Susaki, and Shimanto, I’ve finally reached Tosa-shimizu, the southernmost municipality in Shikoku.
With a population of around 10,000, this is one of Japan’s “marginal municipalities,” where over 50% of the residents are aged 65 or older. The shopping arcades and dining areas were incredibly quiet after dark, reflecting the deep stillness of a town facing depopulation.
In the midst of the quiet streets, I was lucky enough to find a local public bath (Sento) that was still open late. It was a wonderful, relaxing soak that warmed me to the core. There’s something deeply comforting about the glow of a Sento in a silent town. The footage of this experience is in the second half of the video, so please enjoy!
