[New ] Japan Travel DEC-2025 Episode #3 I Beppu Oita
*German subtitles are also available*
Welcome back to Japan Travel December 2025, Journey Across Kyushu and Yakushima Episode 3!
If you missed Episodes 1 and 2, please be sure to watch those first.
As mentioned in Episode 2, I was staying in Yufuin, but in Episode 3, I’ll show you the day trip I took to Beppu.
Oita Prefecture is home not only to Yufuin but also to Beppu, another extremely famous and representative hot spring resort. Beppu is the collective name for several hot spring villages known as the “Beppu Hatto” (Beppu Eight Hot Springs). Yufuin refers specifically to the Yufuin Hot Spring Village (including Yufuin, Yuhira, and Tsukahara). Both are popular as the two major hot spring resorts representing Oita Prefecture.
It takes about 40 minutes by car from Yufuin to Beppu City.
Beppu and Yufuin are adjacent, allowing for quick travel between them via JR (limited express trains) or bus. Many model itineraries exist for touring them together.
Thus, Oita Prefecture’s defining feature as the “Hot Spring Prefecture” is the opportunity to enjoy two major hot spring destinations—Yufuin and Beppu—each offering distinct charms.
Whether you stay in Yufuin or Beppu, it’s nice that you can enjoy the hot springs at either location.
Today’s destination is Oita’s “Hell Tour.” This classic sightseeing route takes you through seven unique hells (tourist attractions) in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture, where steam, hot mud, and boiling water erupt from high-temperature springs. It features seven hells (Umi-Jigoku, Chinoike-Jigoku, Tatsumaki-Jigoku, Shiraike-Jigoku, Oniishi-Bōzu-Jigoku, Oniyama-Jigoku, Kamado-Jigoku), including four designated as National Scenic Spots. These include the cobalt blue “Sea Hell” and the crimson “Blood Pond Hell.” Each offers distinct colors, landscapes, and experiences (such as foot baths and hell-steamed foods), making it a tourist attraction where visitors can feel the energy of geothermal heat up close.
Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) is one of the largest and most popular spots on the Beppu Jigoku Tour
It is said to have been formed by the eruption of Mount Tsurumi about 1,200 years ago. Its mystical cobalt blue beauty has earned it designation as a National Scenic Beauty Spot.
And beyond the beautiful scenery, Episode 3 is packed with eating scenes.
From Conveyor-belt sushi and Yakiniku to Ramen and Takoyaki eaten in food courts, it’s packed with food-related information.
