We fell in love with Sri Lanka. Here’s why.

We just spent 7 days driving a tuk tuk through rural Sri Lanka on a self-drive group tour, and honestly, it was one of the best trips we’ve ever done.

This wasn’t your typical tour where you’re following someone with a flag. We actually learned to drive a tuk tuk, navigated our own route (with guidance and on-the-ground support), did cultural challenges with locals, and stayed everywhere from jungle glamping tents to historic warehouses and beachy hotels.

The trip took us from Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle into the Knuckles Mountain Range, through tea plantations and tiny villages, then down to the coast. We ate SO much good food, short eats, coconut roti, fish curry, even tried durian. We also got lost multiple times, almost ran out of gas twice, saw wild elephants, and met the most incredible people along the way. That ended up being the whole point, really.
