    🇮🇹☺👍🏻Sperlonga is one of Lazio's jewels, with its white houses perched above the sea, crystal-clear waters, and a timeless atmosphere. But have you ever wondered where its name comes from?
    The name Sperlonga derives from the Latin Speluncae, meaning caves, and refers to the numerous natural cavities dotting its coast. These caves, formed over time by the action of the sea and wind on the limestone rock, have played an important role in the history and legends of the area. The most famous is undoubtedly the Grotto of Tiberius, part of the ancient villa of the Roman emperor. It is said that Tiberius loved to relax here, between banquets and shows, while the sea served as a backdrop to one of the most luxurious residences of the time. The cave housed impressive sculptures inspired by the adventures of Ulysses, many of which are now housed in the Sperlonga Archaeological Museum. But that's not all! The Sperlonga caves were not only places of recreation for emperors, but also natural refuges in later centuries. In the Middle Ages, the Lazio coast was often attacked by Saracen pirates. The inhabitants used these caves to hide and protect themselves from raids, making Sperlonga a difficult town to conquer.
    Even today, the Sperlonga caves continue to enchant all who visit them, but to admire them in all their splendor, there's only one way: by sea. With a boat excursion, you can discover these hidden corners, dive into the transparent waters, and be captivated by a landscape that speaks to centuries of history.

    Ooh, I’ve been there, as well as to Gaeta and Terracina. Sperlonga definitely felt a bit bougier, smaller, and more tranquil. The vibe I got was that it was geared more a more mature and older audience, kind of families with some money. It’s very beautiful. Gaeta was my favorite, though. Hope you will do a tour there, too, and Ponza, which I heard many great things, but never got to see. The coast of Lazio is really not that well known internationally.
