Most them are in all other tourist countries as well .. I remember a woman trying that "string method" 15 years ago in spain .. once you mention "police" they go away pretty quick. At least they did back then.
..but to be fair I felt more scammed when on vacation in austria/salzburg they wanted me to pay 7 euros for a small bottle of water ..
