Sauntering around Kawagoe, a walking tour through “Little Edo” in Kawagoe City
Introduction
Kawagoe is a charming historic city located in Saitama Prefecture, just about 30 minutes from central Tokyo. Often called “Little Edo,” Kawagoe preserves the atmosphere of Japan’s Edo period (1603–1868), making it a perfect destination for a relaxed day trip.
The highlight of Kawagoe is Kurazukuri Street, where traditional warehouse-style buildings line the road. These clay-walled structures once protected valuable goods from fires and now house souvenir shops, cafés, and sweet shops. At the end of the street stands Toki no Kane (The Bell of Time), a symbol of the city that still rings four times a day.
Kawagoe is also home to important temples and shrines. Kita-in Temple is famous for its beautiful gardens and buildings connected to Tokugawa Iemitsu, including rooms said to be relocated from Edo Castle. Nearby, Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine is popular for blessings related to love and relationships, attracting many visitors who enjoy its romantic atmosphere and seasonal decorations.
Don’t miss Kawagoe’s local specialty: sweet potatoes. From ice cream and cakes to traditional snacks, sweet potato treats can be found throughout the city, especially in Candy Alley (Kashiya Yokocho), a nostalgic street filled with old-fashioned sweets.
