The Thousand-Foot Cliff of Mount Hua is one of the most precipitous paths on Mount Hua . It reminds me of the saying, ” After the clouds disperse, the moon shines bright. ” Today, we’re going to challenge Mount Hua, one of China’s Five Great Mountains. It’s not known for its height , but for its perilousness. A mountain path pierces the clouds, with a bottomless abyss below and sheer cliffs above. Some say Mount Hua isn’t for walking , but for challenging. Today, let’s explore Mount Hua together and see why it’s called the most dangerous mountain in the world. ( Smoking is prohibited in any area of the train.) Hello, A -Shu. Since two years ago, I’ve been climbing China’s most famous mountains and rivers , creating a series of films called “Searching for Mountains.” I’ve already climbed many famous mountains , including Huangshan, Fanjingshan, Emeishan, Changbaishan , Lushan, Wugongshan, Hengshan, etc. For the “Searching for Mountains” series, I plan to climb 100 of China’s most famous peaks. Mount Hua, known as China’s most precipitous mountain, is naturally a must-see. After about 35 minutes from Xi’an North Station , we arrived at Huashan North Station . “The most dangerous mountain in the world! Not taking the cable car is a wasted trip to Mount Hua! ” Ascending the North Peak , Mount Hua , the most dangerous mountain in the world ! There are five peaks: East , South, West, North, and Central. Upon exiting Huashan North Station , you’ll be greeted by Taihua Mountain, also known as Huashan, part of the eastern Qinling Mountains. Okay, I hailed a taxi to Yuquan Temple at the foot of Huashan Mountain, which is the starting point for hiking. The road ends at Huashan Mountain! Ah , the highest, the highest! Let’s look at Huayin City . Huayin City is a county-level city under Weinan City. Look at the street scene of Huayin City, Weinan City! It ‘s developing better and better. However, there are fewer people climbing now . On weekends, it’s incredibly crowded. Weekends and holidays are the best time to climb Huashan. It ‘s not too cold, not icy at all , quite nice. Tomorrow ‘s temperature will still be high , over ten degrees Celsius. It’ll be icy, so it won’t be good to climb Mount Hua, right? It’ll be icy , and there will be many people during holidays. It can even take selfies ! It can rotate! Oh, it can take selfies! We’ll find a hotel at the foot of Mount Tai and Mount Hua, and then get up early tomorrow to hike. The entrance to the mountain is at Yuquan Temple at the foot of the mountain. Here it says ” Nighttime Climb from here to Mount Hua Gate, 700 meters ahead.” If Mount Hua must be a mountain that can only be climbed on foot, then
Yuquan Temple is where this journey truly begins. Located on the northern slope of Mount Hua, it has been the main entrance and starting point for climbing Mount Hua since ancient times. So, starting from Yuquan Temple, follow the mountain’s contours upwards… And embarked on that perilous path, passed down for millennia. Since ancient times, there has only been one path to Mount Hua . For a long period of history, the steep terrain limited access to the main peak of Mount Hua, making this virtually the only route . Pilgrims, travelers, scholars, and leisure seekers had to start from here , climbing the steps one by one. Therefore, Yuquan Temple is not only a Taoist temple but also a gateway , a door to Mount Hua, the Western Peak. Located in Huayin City, Weinan City, Shaanxi Province, at the northern foot of Mount Hua, I heard the temperature at the summit is already below -10 degrees Celsius . I saw a double room… If there’s a double bed, there’s a standard room. You can see Mount Hua from the window. The bathroom has 24-hour hot water. That train was from Xi’an to Weinan City. It ‘s only 6 PM, and it’s almost completely dark. This room cost 66 yuan (about $9.50) on Qunar.com, less than $10 , which is okay. I went out for dinner. I had handmade dumplings, freshly made, with meat and seafood filling, for 23 yuan ($7.20). This one had soy sauce, vinegar, and garlic. I was too weak to speak. It had mushrooms, pork, and shrimp inside . These meat and seafood dumplings were delicious; each dumpling had a shrimp. Hey, I bought some supplies at the supermarket. Tomorrow I’m going up the mountain. The saleswoman here told me she has everything on the mountain, but it’s expensive. I bought a hat (25 yuan, about $3.50) , a pair of gloves , some bread, oranges , bananas, and Snickers. The next morning, I put on all my warm clothes. At 6:39 AM, while it was still dark, I checked the filming equipment. There was an electric blanket on the bed , and roujiamo (Chinese hamburger) and noodles were available. Roujiamo cost 10 yuan for two, eggs were 4 yuan each, and millet porridge was 3 yuan. Breakfast cost 17 yuan . Every hotel restaurant had a map of the Huashan hiking trail. So today, we ‘ll start from the Yuquan Temple trailhead at the foot of the mountain and climb, … At the foot of the mountain , a 10-yuan roujiamo (meat sandwich) in Shaanxi is just pork , mutton, and beef; you can’t fit it in millet porridge or two eggs. For example, how long does it take to hike from Yuquan Temple to the North Peak? Three and a half hours . Then, climbing from the North Peak to the East Peak takes another two and a half hours. From the East Peak to the South Peak takes a little over an hour, and from the South Peak to the West Peak takes a little over an hour. Oh, I’m so nervous today (it feels like a big challenge). I’m drinking porridge and soy milk , which requires a lot of physical strength. Because the West Peak cable car is under maintenance during the off-season , I can’t take the cable car down from the West Peak; I have to go back to the North Peak from the West Peak . Last night, I was probably under a lot of pressure and didn’t sleep a wink. I lay in bed from 10:30 pm until 6:30 am. I feel like I didn’t sleep at all . It was the longest night I’ve ever had . I lay in bed all night, unable to sleep. The roujiamo only had lean meat and no green peppers. The bread itself was also just average; it wasn’t the crispy kind. Huashan Scenic Area. Today, November 26, 2025, the temperature is 0 degrees Celsius . The owner said it’s already below -10 degrees Celsius on the mountain. It’s snowed three times on the mountain this year, but not once at the foot, right? 600 meters ahead of Huashan Gate, at the foot of Huashan Mountain, the altitude is 426 meters. Huashan Gate, Huashan, the most precipitous mountain ! Keep going! Earlier in the video , we mentioned that Huashan is a branch of the eastern section of the Qinling Mountains . We are quite familiar with the Qinling Mountains. The Qinling-Huaihe line is the most important dividing line on the geographical map of China . This line divides China into north and south , defining the climate and rainfall , and determining farming methods and vegetation. Huashan stands on the northern edge of this dividing line. To the south is the humid and mild Yangtze River basin, and to the north is the dry and vast Yellow River. The world is clearly divided by one mountain . Therefore, Huashan is not only one of the Five Sacred Mountains , but also a natural barrier blocking the warm and humid air currents from the south, protecting the Guanzhong Plain and ancient… I bought my ticket on the app last night in Chang’an (present-day Xi’an). When I arrived at Huashan Gate , it was the entrance for hiking. I could enter by scanning my ID card. I hiked up the mountain and then took the cable car down from the North Peak. The combined ticket was 260 yuan (about 37 USD). There was no one at the self-service ticket gate or facial recognition area . Was I too early today? There was no one on duty at security. I entered Huashan Gate at 7:33 AM. Let’s see how long it takes to get to the North Peak. Huashan is a mountain of heroes. Qin Shi Huang was the first to tour Huashan, ascending the sacred mountain and dominating the world . Emperor Wu of Han built the Xiyue Temple and held state sacrifices to Huashan, thus establishing the ceremonial system for imperial worship. Protected by Huashan, he ultimately achieved great power. Chenxiang split the mountain on the West Peak to save his mother, a heroic act of filial piety that became a model for all ages. Jin Yong’s “Huashan Sword Tournament ” reveals the heroes’ deep affection for Huashan; Huashan creates heroes. The historical origins of Mount Hua are intertwined with heroes throughout the ages . Shoushan stone… Oh my god , four or five men have already overtaken me! I don’t know why, but my legs feel so weak. Is it because I lacked oxygen last night? Friends, I feel like I can’t walk anymore, what should I do? There are still nearly 10 hours of hiking left. Why is this happening ? I don’t even dare to shout any slogans now. Talking is exhausting! First hurdle: Wuliguan is the first pass on the way to Mount Hua, hence its name . The first pass is known for its formidable defense, said to be “one man can hold the pass against ten thousand.” Wow, it’s only the end of November, and the pipes are already frozen! They’ve frozen so quickly, there’s no water! From a certain angle, Mount Hua looks quite like Mount Huangshan. Cucumbers, 3 for 10 yuan (about $1.40). Replenishing energy … It ‘s so cold! This water… Because I have two navel oranges on me, they’re too heavy. I want to eat them. One navel orange costs a little over 3 yuan. Two years ago, I wouldn’t have even questioned whether I could climb up there. I feel something’s wrong with my body; I get tired easily , and my legs feel weak. I don’t know if it’s because of my blood sugar or my sleep. Eating one navel orange made me lose almost 500 grams of weight . No, it ‘s almost not sweet , it feels a bit dry. How can such a terrible navel orange sell for over 6 yuan for 500 grams? I always love climbing hills , and suddenly reaching flat ground feels like a fish in water. The sky above Qingyun Cave is lush and green , and the sunlight is already shining on the high peaks , but right now, in the valley, it still feels very overcast. Every now and then, there’s a small shop selling cucumbers, fruit, mineral water, and Red Bull. There’s an almost round boulder here, and the words “Jade King Cave” are written on the door. Can you imagine? That round boulder is hollow inside! Oh friends, there’s a stone door here! So tiring! A stone door enclosed by two boulders— I feel like my legs can’t hold up anymore ! Ah, look at the people behind me, constantly surpassing me . It’s okay if they surpass me, as long as I’m better than I was a second ago . Oh my god, Shaluoping! Look how long it took us from Yuquan Temple to get to Shaluoping! After Shaluoping, we’ll reach Maonv Cave, Maonv Cave, Xiangshui Stone, Yunmen , Qingkeping, Dongdao Temple , Huixin Stone, Qianchi Cliff , Baishi Gorge, Yuntou Stone, Heihu Cave, Qunxian Temple, Laojun Ligou , Juxiantai , Memorial Pavilion, Yuwang Cave, Yaowang Cave. Oh my god, we’ve been climbing for an hour and a half and we’ve only just reached this step. Here are tomatoes, apples, pears, and cucumbers. Some people are tired and shouting. Let me shout! Ah, wow, that step! Usually, there are iron chains on this side of the cliff. Hey, a little bird , a very clever little bird. It’s 9 o’clock. Maybe it will be more than two hours before we reach the North Peak. Wow, Maonv Cave. Legend has it that a palace maid of Qin Shi Huang, to avoid being buried alive with him at Lishan , carried her zither and escaped with a Qin palace servant to Huashan , hiding in the cave . Maonv Cave, the melodious sound of the zither, the cold moonlight on the desolate ridge , wow! Wow, after climbing a very steep staircase, I saw two colored mountain peaks bathed in golden sunlight. The bridge, called Fairy Maiden Bridge, was amazing! I sweated so much ! Life is like climbing a mountain; why is it so difficult? I ate my second navel orange, which will help me lose several hundred grams more weight . To be honest, I had many thoughts of giving up at the foot of the mountain , but now that I’m in the middle of nowhere, I ‘m stuck and have no choice but to keep going . At the foot of the mountain, I was still wondering if I could reach the top , and I started to feel insecure because it seemed so difficult. But now that I’m here , it feels like a do- or-die situation; there’s no turning back , I can only keep pushing forward . Ah, these are the more developed mountains I’ve climbed before! Usually, I’m the one who overtakes others most of the time to save time . Today, everyone overtook me, and there were even people going down and up the stairs. The valley in the picture is called Huashan Valley. It refers to a traditional mountain climbing route from the foot of Huashan Mountain to the main peak. It extends from bottom to top along the natural fissures of Huashan Mountain and is one of the main passages for ancient people to climb Huashan Mountain. During the climb, the path winds between canyons and cliffs , with rich landforms. The ancients carved out dangerous and classic landscapes such as Qianchizhuang, Baichixia , Laojun Ligou, Canglongling , Yaofanshen, Xiaqiting, and Changkong Plank Road between the canyons and cliffs . It is part of the classic Huashan hiking route. Huashan Valley and the distant Weinan City and Huayin City in Shaanxi Province. Wow, after taking the aerial photos, I found that the road is long and arduous. I have to keep going. This is Xiangshan Stone, right ? This is Huashan Valley. I walked from the outermost end of that valley to Xiangshui Stone . I only got to Xiangshui Stone last night . I bought gloves for 2 yuan last night. Wearing them is because these handrails are a bit uncomfortable. I can also remotely control the drone . Hmm, this is much more comfortable. Yunmen Feilai Stone The fifth of the five heroes of Tongxian Pass , 150 years ago . My knees can’t take the wind from Yuntai. Here’s a stone house. The wall of this house collapsed. One of the five heroes, Song Ke, 190 years ago . These are trash, plastic bottles. Wow , the steps become extremely steep at that place . Jiutian Palace. Haha, this is the East Taoist Temple, also known as Jiutian Palace . Climbing
a mountain and then walking on flat ground makes me feel so happy. It’s like some famous entrepreneurs. They may be used to a life of luxury. After climbing the mountain, they return to this city and live an ordinary life. They feel extremely happy because the sweetness is all the more precious after the bitterness . How many years of the Republic of China? Forty-three years. Haha , an exciting challenge ! The heart-pounding Thousand-Foot Cliff and Hundred -Foot Gorge are almost here. I’ve seen them online. They ‘re quite scary . Charge! Face the challenge head-on. It’s so cold. That’s the Qinghu Road. This road is closed, so we can only take this more dangerous Thousand-Foot Cliff. This huge rock is called the Returning Heart Stone. Look at the Thousand-Foot Cliff. The Thousand-Foot Cliff is steep!
The exposed granite has a pattern like zebra stripes, making each step feel like it takes all your willpower. Your knees feel completely unresponsive, as if you’ve lost dozens of kilograms of weight. Let’s rest a bit before the most difficult challenge. The Thousand-Foot Cliff is so beautiful! Look at the contrast of light and shadow! The trees on the mountain are already turning yellow. Wow, these people are walking while looking at their phones! I haven’t even touched my phone. I think when you’re deep in nature like this , you should disconnect from the internet and even stop listening to music. Just immerse yourself completely in this natural scenery to get the best experience. Grilled sausages: 3 for 10 yuan. The Taoist priest is going down the mountain. The Returning Heart Stone… My goodness, we ‘ve been climbing for almost a whole morning and haven’t even reached Yuntai Peak , the North Peak! Look at these iron bars— they’re directly inserted into the stone! So, whether it’s mountain climbing or traveling, you should do it early, while you’re young! But then again, people often say, “Want to buy osmanthus flowers and share wine until the end… ” Unlike the carefree days of youth , it seems everyone is nostalgic for the past. But there’s a saying: ” Though the sun sets late, its glow still fills the sky.” Even if you only accomplish what you wanted to do at 20 by 30, it doesn’t matter, right ? Recalling past joys is fine too. Life is fleeting, the important thing is that time waits for no one, so seize the day and enjoy life to the fullest! Wow, a glance out of the corner of my eye suddenly shocked me. It’s not only steep but also incredibly long! My goodness! But I’ve climbed Cliff Village, located on the eastern cliff of Qingkeping, a famous dangerous path on Mount Hua. It’s the only way to climb the North Peak of Mount Hua. Originally, it was a narrow crevice between cliffs, only three feet wide and steep . The Song Dynasty people carved a path along the crevice, creating a total of 370 steps. Oh, a short rest, let’s go! Oh, so there’s also a Thousand-Foot Cliff up there! There are two paths , both extremely steep. It seems one is going up and this one is going down. But anyway, okay , let’s follow the rules and mark them. This uphill path is much less dangerous than the downhill Thousand-Foot Cliff we just saw . It ‘s a first-person experience; watching the video is like experiencing it firsthand, adding another life experience to your journey. Frankly , I don’t think it’s that dangerous compared to Cliff Village, as it’s much better constructed. And the Thousand-Foot Cliff on Mount Hua is one of the most thrilling paths on Mount Hua, but with iron chains on both sides , I think it’s alright. Also, some of the stones aren’t very regular. Originally, there was no path ; the Song Dynasty people carved these stone steps from the gaps , creating a path. There are two iron chains, so it’s not a monotonous landscape. The steepest part is probably over 80 degrees! Wow, there’s no one in front or behind ! It’s quite difficult to film while walking. And wow, things are getting tougher and steeper as you go up. Almost there! Keep going! Frankly , if you’re not holding the camera with one hand… It was pretty easy , but I was a little nervous about doing it with one hand. Finally , I made it to the top of the Thousand-Foot Cliff. Now, after the Thousand-Foot Cliff, there’s another challenge: the Hundred-Foot Gorge. This little shop is so impressive! Even Emperor Guangxu’s voice sounded a bit weak. The Hundred-Foot Gorge is a bit blurry. Hey , look, this is the downward route of the Thousand-Foot Cliff . We didn’t have a chance to walk this route , but we could go down and then come back up to experience it. It’s too tiring , otherwise, we could really try it. The point is to experience it! This cat’s fur is so special, meow meow. Sitting here at the Hundred-Foot Gorge, I can see the scenery. I heard it’s only 30 minutes until we reach the North Peak! I didn’t expect it to be only… We had to take it one step at a time. We reached places that seemed insurmountable, and climbed Baichixia and Tianxian Cave. The inscriptions here are quite blurry. Yeah! Mount Hua is renowned for its perilous cliffs, with sheer, towering peaks. The Heart-Stopping Stone is just two rocks nestled between two mountains, preventing us from falling. Sometimes, for no apparent reason, my legs suddenly give way, and my knees buckle. Ah, this openness is so peaceful. There’s some snow still lingering on the mountain. It’s snowed three times this year, but not once at the foot of the mountain. We’ll continue climbing and carving a cave. There are also Taoist stones for the Equality View. This seems to be the first time I’ve seen snow this year. Last year I spent two months traveling in Northeast China , and then flew back south from Changchun in December. I haven’t seen snow since. This year, I’m going to set off for Northeast China again to complete the exploration of the destinations I didn’t finish last year— a border trip! I’m looking forward to it. Wearing more clothes is definitely the right thing to do. Although it got a bit hot at the foot of the mountain , it was still quite cold up there. After passing Erxian Bridge, the road became much easier and flatter, so I didn’t have to climb any more steps. I’m almost at the North Peak. Today, it seems like the first rays of sunlight are shining on my face. Although the sun has been out for several hours , it hasn’t been shining warmly because I’ve been in the valley. To be honest, at the foot of the mountain, I was hesitant and doubtful , and I was struggling and tormented when facing difficulties. But step by step , I gradually gained clarity and confidence. Maybe it’s because I had just woken up, and my physical strength and condition weren’t very good. I couldn’t help but think of the saying, ” After the clouds disperse, the moon will be full.” What mountain is this? There are wild cats everywhere. Finally, I’ve reached Qunxian Pass. This is the eighth year of the Republic of China. This is the complete content of the first part of Huashan. If you like it , please remember to like and subscribe to my channel. Thank you for watching. See you in the second part of Huashan.
