Best Model Train Event in Japan? Amazing N Scale and Massive Plarail Layouts!
Thank you very much for riding with Choo-Choo Travel today. Today, I’ve come to a fun-looking model train event! It’s about a 20-minute walk from Fuchū-Hommachi Station. I can finally see it. “Let’s Play with Trains!” Musashi-Fuchu Model Railroad Expo 2025. This is in the western part of Tokyo. The admission fee is 400 yen (about $2.60). A Nambu Line train greets us right at the entrance. The destination board says “Let’s Play with Trains 2025.” There are hats from various railway companies. Are these real? So many events! Simulators, N-gauge driving experiences, and more. Looks like there’s a stamp rally too. Let’s start with the N-gauge driving experience. They have openings on weekdays. It seems I can drive on this layout. A layout for freight trains. Ohh! That looks so cool! It’s not drawing power from the overhead lines though. (lol) What a fun time. Let’s check out this layout next. The Musashino Line. A diorama of a steam locomotive (SL) depot. Fantastic. It’s wonderful that children can drive these so freely! Kids tend to go full speed. (:‐S The goats and cows would be startled by that speed! The staff gave me a brief explanation. This shipping container seems to be the controller. Let’s drive the Keio Line. Apparently, it’s not “keep-to-the-left” here. Well, I’ll follow the rules. I wonder if I can make a smooth stop? The Keio Line actually runs near this area. Let’s move on to the next one. Wait? I feel like I’ve seen this somewhere before. I can’t believe I get to drive on a layout that was usually “display only”! The level of detail is incredible! This layout looks so realistic, it’s amazing! The “Resort View Furusato” is departing! So cool! Passing by a steam locomotive is just the best! A perfect stop! What’s this? Maybe the “Rapid Nanohana” from Kyushu? The motor sound is a bit intense… Many other vehicles are on display as well. Do you have a favorite train among these? Seeing trains together that never meet in real life—that’s the beauty of models! Is this a controller too?! Let’s take a look at this layout. The Series 113 in Shonan colors! Stopped perfectly. This time, the blue Sonic! This one looks cool too! Why is everything set to “keep-to-the-right” traffic?! It’s not my fault, sorry! The sound of crossing the points is the best! Now for this modern layout. Departure of the Nambu Line. Off it goes! The way the curves are built is top-notch. Stopping at the station. That went well. Next up, the Kiha 25 series. The “kids driving too fast” problem again. (:| Where should I go next? Plarail! (Plastic toy trains) Wow! Look at the scale of this! It’s so much fun when you get this many together. So many different trains are running! An Inokashira Line train next to a freight train. An Odakyu train and a Shinkansen! The Shinkansen is a full-length set! You can’t underestimate Plarail! Doctor Yellow is on an inspection run too! The N700S is a full 16-car set! The kids must be so excited! I wonder how many motor cars are in there? The Shinkansen viewed from the “Mount Fuji” side. I can’t stop watching this. The Narita Express! Watching the depot is interesting too, isn’t it? A parade of Keio Line trains. There are some nostalgic trains here too. I’m surprised they have so many Inokashira Line cars. Maybe this is the Nambu Line depot? It makes sounds… The back-and-forth gimmicks are fun. Are they switching cars right now? It handles the slopes perfectly. Managing all these tracks is an impressive feat. In some ways, this looks harder than N-gauge. It looks like there are some custom-made Plarails too! This sight is breathtaking!! There must be some rare vintage Plarails here. Seibu Railway. The people displaying these must be huge train fans. They even have headboards! Now, here is the Plarail papercraft corner. It looks like you can cut and build your own train body. Apply some glue… Done! You put this over a chassis to let it run. Off you go! I really like the Seibu Series 101. A very smooth run. Time to wrap things up. Oh… The “Hiei” that runs in Kyoto has appeared. Thank you for the wonderful time. Apparently, there used to be a “Gyonan Railway” here long ago. You can enjoy 360° Plarail footage in the planetarium. I received special permission from the organizer to film and share this. A 360° view instead of just a front view is very unique. This is really interesting. (Shortened for time) Using a planetarium for this is so luxurious! That was fun. Next, let’s try the Keio Train Simulator! Everyone is having so much fun! I’ve been assigned the “Special Express” from Shinjuku to Chofu. Wow! This master controller feels great! Wait, is this another section that’s mostly underground…? Tunnels don’t look very good on camera… It felt like I was actually at work for a while… Finally, we’re heading outside! If the controller was a bit heavier, it would feel just like the real thing! Let’s see if I can stop smoothly. Oh no, I decelerated way too much… Ahhh!! I got so confused that I messed up even though the doors were already open! (:| I’m glad it didn’t turn into a major accident… Alright, let’s enjoy it from here! Sorry I’m using one hand due to filming. That was a pretty good stop! I’m getting totally hooked on this. If I had this at home, I’d be doing it all day. It requires very precise driving. I overshot a little, but it’s within the margin of error, right? There’s no end to this, so I’ll stop here. It seems you can drive as much as you want if you stay at this hotel. Let’s check out the model railroad room. HO-gauge and N-gauge are on display. HO-gauge is so big! Are they fans of the “Sunrise Express”?? A Series 165 is running too. There’s a Kiha 110 series as well. Just placed directly on the floor. Is this the streetcar that came to Hiroshima from Hannover? Nostalgic “Blue Trains” are here too. Maybe they ran out of spare rails… What a mysterious display. (lol) What??? Are they coupling and uncoupling?! Some very strange driving is happening here. How does this even work… It looks like there are two motor cars. A faulty coupler? Oh! A real departure bell! This area is for N-gauge! This looks very expertly crafted. This appears to be Fuchū Station! So precise! Freight trains are running. And the Nambu Line. Wow, the detail is incredible! And the balance is just perfect! The street in front of the station is beautifully recreated. Amazing, amazing, amazing! It’s fun just watching the little people moving around. An entire world condensed into this tiny space. The quality is so high. Any train looks great on this layout. A map of this specific layout. Recreating all these real-life locations is just mind-blowing. The realism inside the station is incredible. And they said this was all made from paper! They even studied architecture. It’s the Fuchū-Hommachi Station I just walked through! Apparently, these modules can be transported by covering them with boxes. Whoa! The inside of the station is incredibly realistic! This is truly amazing. Even the workers look so real. The temples and signals are very realistic too. I can’t believe this is almost entirely handmade. I could watch this forever. I kind of want one for myself. But of course, it’s not for sale. Since it’s called “3D,” these modules are very multi-layered. I’m really captivated by this. Every angle looks like a perfect picture. It’s like looking at the real world. Look at this station platform! It’s way too realistic. This is Higashi-Fuchū Station. And the old Bubaigawara Station. Being able to create layouts that transcend time is one of the perks. The buildings are also made with a period-accurate feel. The 3D depth is just irresistible. I wonder how many days it took to build this. I love the area around the points too. Such a pleasant time. The rails are connected here too, so they can go over to the other side. What a beautiful view. The railroad crossing is also very realistic. I bet the person using this is having the most fun. Wow! My favorite, the old Seibu Series 501! It seems to be a recreation of Shiraitodai Station. The inside of the station building is also amazing. It’s nice to watch the train pass through the station building. You can really feel the era. I love layouts like this. The passing train adds such a nice touch. It’s just a wonderful time all around. A multi-level crossing with the road. The scenery changes depending on the angle you look at it. It’s like a slice of a real city. I truly enjoyed this. There was even a module near a soccer field. Everyone loves a multi-level crossing, right? I wish I could have this at home. There was also a display of Keio Line cars. There are some rare vehicles here too. Let’s try the stamp rally! Oh wow. It’s autumn, isn’t it? I’m walking around the buildings looking for the stamps. I didn’t realize there was another place to play with Plarail here! They have a huge variety of Plarails for rent. I’d love to play, but I have to get going. The third one. The fourth one. Complete! I got a commemorative pin! A nice little souvenir. I had so much fun I even forgot to eat lunch. Thank you for riding with me to the final stop!
I look forward to seeing you on the next ride!
