Nostalgic Stay at Japan’s Beautiful Cat Onsen Ryokan!🐈♨︎
Staying at a Nostalgic Cat Onsen Ryokan in Japan! Beautiful hot springs and lovely cats. Hope you enjoy this trip. Good morning! I’m at Tokyo Station🍁 Today, I’m heading to a cat ryokan in Chiba from the Yaesu Bus Terminal. Bus stop 11, departing at 11:40.
2,000 yen ($12.77/€10.98) The ginkgo leaves in early December were beautiful in Tokyo. Goodbye, Tokyo! We’ll cross the Aqua-Line, a bridge that runs across the sea, to reach Chiba. My travel companion today is a chocolate chip bun from my favorite bakery at Tokyo Station, “DAISY Tokyo.” And my Wilkinsons for my diet. This bread is insanely good, so please try it. Arrived at Kururi Station in Chiba! From here, I’ll take a city-run demand taxi.
(Very popular—booking from at least a week in advance is recommended) Since it’s operated by the city, it only costs 500 yen! ($3.19/€2.74) Crossing a bright red bridge toward the ryokan! That building over there is the ryokan! Arrived🍁 This is Shichirigawa Onsen, where I’m staying tonight. A cat resting on a carpet of autumn leaves. Nice to meet you, calico kitty. Oh! I thought she came to greet me, but I was wrong😂 I met many cats even before entering the ryokan. Hello there. This one’s name is Cream—just like the way he looks. Cream guided me to the entrance. A nostalgic entrance with a traditional irori hearth. It feels like I’ve slipped back in time. Shichirigawa Onsen is a ryokan with over 50 years of history. (Welcome) His name is Chibi-nyan. He looks just like Hana from Shoraku Ryokan! (Did you call me?) But if you look closely, Hana is a little whiter. The cats always wait at the entrance for guests to arrive. There are currently 8 rescued cats living at the ryokan. There used to be nine, but one recently passed away🥲 It’s sunbathing time right now. Cream seems to love being outside. This stylish tuxedo cat is Non-chan. He says, “I welcomed you, so give me a treat.” Of course, Lord Non. All of it is beautiful. First, let’s check in! One night with meals was 13,900 yen! ($88.73/€76.31) There are only 5 guest rooms, all on the 2nd floor. You can’t book online, so reservations must be made by phone. My room is “Sawa,” the one at the very end. Oh, beautiful. A simple, cozy Japanese room. The autumn leaves are beautiful from here too. Complimentary water and tea. Check-in at 2 PM, check-out at 11 AM.
Dinner at 6 PM, breakfast at 8:30 AM. Then a black cat suddenly walked in! Yes! Thank you for visiting me. She’s Kuu-chan, the black cat I met earlier. If the windows or doors are left open, the cats may come in to visit. Hey, that kind of hurts😂 A black cat and a stunning view—what a combo. So cute! And Kuu-chan even slept in my room. There’s a large lounge where the cats gather, so let’s go have a look! Non-chan’s big jump! This is the large lounge loved by all the cats. It’s warm thanks to the heater. This is Mi-chan, the calico who tricked me earlier. Operation “Make Friends with Treats” Oh! She let me pet her! Non-chan is sleeping. This sharp-eyed cat is Nana-chan. Want some too, Nana-chan? (You’re not very good at this) Teacher Nana looks absolutely strict. But maybe she’s a gentle teacher deep down. Cream is so easy to recognize!😂 I heard he used to be very cautious, but after coming here, he gradually became more affectionate. Chibi-nyan. He’s the youngest at 2 years old!
He came when he was just a kitten. He’s apparently very friendly and often visits the guest rooms too. I hope he visits mine as well. Good morning. Wake-up treat time! This cat who looks like Non-chan is Wild. Wild is around 14 years old—a grandpa kitty. He seems to be good friends with Cream🤭 There was a Buddha statue in the Lounge. Owner: This is called Hōju Kannon. See the jewel they’re holding? Yes, I see it! Owner: The jewel isn’t actually visible in real life. Owner: But it represents a light that shines even in darkness. Owner: Where is it? Owner: In everyone’s heart. I see. Wild is always resting nearby. Owner: He used to be a stray and stayed in the boiler room until 2 years ago. Owner: But after feeding him for a while, he started peeking in like, “Is it ready yet?” After 1 or 2 years of that, he now sleeps with the owner. Apparently, they always sleep together here. Mi-chan is here! Operation treats: success😏 She’s the oldest cat here, around 18! She doesn’t look it! A ryokan filled with cats with unique personalities. Actually, Nana-chan has a short tail😂 (Come on) I’ve now met 7 out of the 8 cats! Pī-chan, who’s said to look like Nana-chan, didn’t show up during my stay… If you see her, you’re lucky. But you can always meet the big teddy bear🐻 Let’s head to the hot spring. The men’s and women’s baths switch every day. What a view… Shichirigawa Onsen is one of the finest hot springs in Chiba. The free-flowing sulfur spring has a unique yellow color that leaves your skin incredibly smooth. This is exactly the kind of hot spring I’ve always dreamed of. There’s also an indoor bath, which was amazing. When I returned to my room, Kuu-chan was still there! Even with the window open, she doesn’t want to leave. She’s unbearably cute. She even crawls under the blankets with me. So cute! She goes in and out. I already adore you. The sunset shining through the window looks beautiful. Sleepy, huh? Autumn leaves are so calming. There’s a large irori hearth at the entrance. You can grill fish or meat and enjoy a warm, cozy meal. The hot spring and meals are also available for day visitors. The irori is also a playground for the cats. Cream is sunbathing. Don’t get too brown out there. And then I ran into Kuu-chan again. This is hot spring water. It has the same properties as the bath we saw earlier. I didn’t know some hot springs were drinkable. I want to be healthy from the inside too. It tasted like clean, mild hot water—surprisingly good! Kuu-chan looks great by the irori too. There aren’t many chances to catch the cats jumping. I’ve only managed to film it a few times. See how many jumps you can spot too! Two cats buried in the futon. Too cute… (Fighting pose🥊) Gotcha! It’s dinner time. Ah! Chibi-nyan is here. Hey, Chibi-nyan. His greeting sounded much cuter than I expected. I want to play, but hunger wins. Dinner is served at Irori-tei. Since the entrance irori is often used by day visitors, overnight guests dine here. This is my seat! Dinner is an unbeatable lineup of charcoal-grilled meat, seafood, and sashimi. Plus pickles and yuba sashimi. And tomatoes, salad—an absolutely perfect spread. The meat needs to be grilled thoroughly for about 20 minutes. I ordered umeshu (plum wine) separately. (¥600/$4/€3) Cheers to another great day. “Ahh, so good! While everything cooks, I’ll enjoy the sashimi. Both the tuna and squid were amazing. Crab! What is this? It’s insanely good. The yuba sashimi, similar to tofu, had a pleasantly firm texture. The meats are beef, pork, and chicken. The beef should be done by now. Even if it looks charred, it’s still medium-rare. So juicy and delicious. The fish and shrimp should be ready too. The fish are mackerel, salmon, and sea bream. All of them were tender, and the simple salt seasoning really brought out the flavor. The barbecue medley continues. Squid. Scallops and whelks. Tomatoes and long green onions. Shiitake!(mushrooms) Come to think of it, I hadn’t eaten the shrimp yet. Delicious. It’s amazing how charcoal grilling gives everything such a deep flavor. The balance of meat, seafood, and vegetables was perfect. To finish, a grilled rice ball. A beautiful golden fox color🦊 Add some nori (seaweed) The rice ball is great, but the nori is incredible😂 The nori makes it at least 10 times better. That was delicious. It’s dinner time for the cats too! They’re all gathering like crazy! Cream gets smacked for no reason! Classic cat behavior😂 The owner takes care of the cats every single day. They were originally stray cats living near the ryokan. Eventually, while looking for food, they began living here. The owner even let me feed them. He says regular guests sometimes help with their care too. Being allowed to help take care of them isn’t something trivial. The owner is truly kind—to both people and cats. But in his younger days, he worked in sales, focused only on money. When things stopped going well, he realized he needed to value people and cats more. After that, he became a monk for a while before eventually starting this ryokan—and it’s been over 30 years now. I hope he continues to protect this place. Please watch over it too, Hōju Kannon. Good night. I was drawn to the hot spring at night. The nighttime atmosphere is wonderful too. The hot spring is open from 6 AM to 10 PM. Since it’s deep in the mountains, hikers often visit during the day. At night, it’s almost always empty—highly recommended. After the bath, I always crave ice cream. Let’s go with the last Monaou. ¥200 ($1/€1) They had drinks as well. Non-chan came to my room! He was happy to see Kuu-chan again. Welcome treats. I’ll have my ice cream too. Vanilla ice cream inside a monaka wafer. Delicious. Ice cream after a hot spring is unbeatable. You want some too? Yours is this one. You really like staying in my room, don’t you? Ready to go outside? The outside door stays open the whole time. But you’re not going out, huh? (Not that I mind😂) At Shoraku Ryokan, it was possible to reserve a room and stay with one cat at night. But here, it’s different. The door needs to remain open so the cats can freely come and go at night. Whether a cat visits the room or not is purely luck. Footage for people who want to be covered in cats. Non-chan got under the blankets with me too. Thank you. Both of them came in! Bye, Non-chan. And next to arrive is… Chibi-nyan! What an adorable entrance. (Then give me treats) Of course, Lord Chibi-nyan. As long as I have treats, I’m unstoppable. He’ll follow me forever. Moments of peaceful time with the cats. Are you heading out too, Chibi-nyan? See you later. Looks like it’s just the two of us now. Good night. Later that night, Chibi-nyan returned. Like a little ninja🥷 He’s nocturnal too—just like Hana at Shoraku Ryokan🤭 Next to arrive in my room was Cream—for the first time! Why don’t you ever come when I’m awake? (Is Kuu-chan alive?) (Status: confirmed alive!) Kuu-chan wakes up. Cats’ sleep cycles are truly mysterious. Good morning. Breakfast is charcoal-grilled chicken and salmon! Charcoal-grilled breakfast is pure happiness. I ate so much last night, yet I’m already hungry. Delicious. The salmon was rich and fatty—so good. Then Chibi-nyan appeared. (I want some too) Black natto. I mixed half of it with rice. Highly recommended—really good. Then Non-chan showed up next. No way—he climbed onto my lap! How did you get so attached overnight!?🥰 Kneading time. He’s a true craftsman. His artisan skills never stop. Okay, that’s starting to hurt a little😂 Your claws are sinking in, sir. (Don’t interrupt me!) Can I finish my breakfast now? (No) Why not?😂 Okay, breakfast is over. Then he gently bit me. What does that even mean? Is he being affectionate or annoyed? I have no idea. He finally calmed down. Cats change moods instantly—it’s hard to read them. But that’s what makes them so cute. Thank you for the precious time. In the morning, the men’s and women’s baths had switched. This open-air bath is great too. The autumn leaves were so close! Right before checkout, I gave the cats one last treat. Thank you, everyone! At checkout, I always feel both sadness and happiness at the same time. What an amazing ryokan. See you again, Non-chan! The bill was paid altogether at the end. (Cash only!) Including the ice cream and umeshu, the total was ¥14,700. See you all again. Non-chan. Cream. Thank you too, Nana-chan. And most of all—Kuu-chan, who stayed with me the longest. I’ll definitely come back to see you again. To avoid getting too sad, I keep walking without looking back. Goodbye, Shichirigawa Onsen. Kuu-chaaaan!! I’m taking the bus back to Tokyo from the Kururi Station stop, marked by the 7-Eleven. Buses run about once an hour, and you can board without a reservation. I’ve arrived back at Tokyo Station. Hm? Something’s going on. It’s the Marunouchi Illumination! Wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas🎄 Thank you for watching until the end! See you on the next trip.
