Hamada Castle 2025
Today, I’m heading to Hamada Castle in Shimane Prefecture. Hamada Castle was built by Furuta Shigeharu. I’m taking the “Oki” limited express train to Hamada Station. From the station, it’s about a 20-minute walk to Hamada Castle. I head west on National Route 9. Along the way, I stop by a monument commemorating the successive lords of Hamada Castle. This is a stone shrine. Behind the main hall, there’s a monument commemorating the successive lords of Hamada Castle. I return to the original road and turn right where there’s a sign for Hamada Castle. Up ahead, I can see Akiba Shrine. It’s said that the poet Kakinomoto no Hitomaro died in Hamada. Hamada Castle was built by Furuta Shigeharu in 1620. After the Furuta clan, the castle was ruled by vassals of the Tokugawa shogunate and related feudal lords. There’s a sign for Hamada Castle. Hamada Gokoku Shrine is a relatively new shrine, founded during the Showa era. Next to the shrine, I find the path to Hamada Castle. This is a monument commemorating the Hamada clan, engraved with the words of Shiba Ryotaro. This is a CG image of a restored Hamada Castle. The gate you see in front of you was originally the main gate of the Tsuwano Domain. It later became the main gate of the Hamada Prefectural Office and was relocated to Hamada Castle during the Showa period. Go through the gate. This is the tallest stone wall in Hamada Castle. Turn around here and go left. Going left, you will find Ninomon Gate. Continue straight ahead. Up ahead is the Demaru. The Demaru was also known as the Honmaru Waki Sennin-tamari. Its role was to monitor the west side. Go back and continue toward Ninomon Gate. This is Ninomon Gate. There was a Yaguramon Gate here. Proceed through the Ote-koguchi gate . Go through Ichinomon Gate. You have arrived at Honmaru. Hamada Castle is approximately 67 meters above sea level. The view of Matsubara Bay is spectacular. Tonoura is hidden by trees and is not very visible. Near here stood a three-story turret, which was essentially the castle tower. Now that we’ve toured the Honmaru, we head down. We also visit the remains of the Enshozo storehouse, located a short distance away. At the end of the Edo period, the Hamada clan was attacked by the Choshu clan and forced to burn down and retreat. The Enshozo was also blown up during that attack. A little further down there was a well. Below this is Nakanomon Gate, the former entrance to the castle, so let’s go and check it out. Stone walls remain in the forest. Thank you for watching.
