果然匯&芝山岩半日遊Half-day tour of Guoranhui & Zhishan Rock2025/12/11

Lam-ia&nan-ya
With nothing to do, I met up with my high school classmates for a meal. Afterwards, we went hiking and strolling around Zhishan Rock to digest our food. Tianmu is a top residential area for retirees in Taiwan, quite different from the bustling Ximending in the East District. On a sunny winter afternoon, the streets of Tianmu were quiet, warm, and peaceful, lined with high-rise buildings, exuding an air of affluence.
Decades ago, the Tianmu area was a “land of abundant rain”, which was simply called “lam-ia” and transliterated into Cantonese as “nan-ya”.
Unknown streams in Taiwan are collectively called “khe-ia”. “也-ia” was originally a noun suffix with no meaning. After the May Fourth Movement, when the vernacular was transliterated into Hokkien, “也-ia” became a phrase. “Lan-ia” is translated as “lan-ya”, which is just a drop in the ocean.
There is an unnamed stream in the Hsinchu area, which the locals call “溪也 khe-ia”. Later, it was transliterated into Mandarin as “客雅 kheh-ia-“, which is similar to the transliteration of “濫也 lam-ia” for “蘭雅nan-ya ” in the Tianmu area.
The evolution of language is truly a dramatic and poignant process.
