【65日間・北海道車中泊の旅】おっさん軽自動車の旅⑥
Hokkaido, car camping trip. Day 7. 8:00 AM, 33°C inside the car. It’s pretty hot. Steamed beans for breakfast. Drying a wet refrigerator. The bottom is warped and there’s a gap. Today’s highest temperature is 30°C. It’s too hot inside the car. Circling Kamome Island. I might be the only one on the island. A delicate balance. How does it get there? It seems impossible to climb onto the rocks. Apparently there’s a rope-climbing festival. Kamome Island used to be a port. This was the port. Did they tie ship ropes to wooden stakes? A deep spot. The adventure begins. [Tekaeshi Battery Ruins]. Apparently this is where cannons were kept. Is it around here? Great view. Maybe they kept cannons here and fired when ships came? Rock pavement everywhere. Looks like I could go down. No path from here. The sound has disappeared. Maybe it’s quiet because it’s surrounded. I’ve reached the edge. Just then a ship arrived. What is this? It’s gross. It doesn’t look like barnacles. There are so many of them. There are so many in the sea too. The water is so clear. Strange seaweed. There’s no path, so I was worried about getting back. I made it back. This is the location of the lighthouse where I watched the sunset yesterday. The island extends to the other side as well. It has a unique shape. It looks like a shark’s back. It’s hot, so I’m heading home. The Kaiyoumaru over there is a replica ship that disembarked. Apparently the real Kaiyoumaru sank. That’s where it sank. It was so hot, so I went for a dip. The parking lot here is very quiet at night. I want to come back. Off. I ended up at this bakery again. I went at 11 o’clock, so the selection was perfect. Two rice balls, 100 yen [US$0.70]. Ginger pork, 150 yen [US$1]. Cinnamon donut, 20 yen [US$0.15]. Matriozzo, 100 yen [US$0.70]. Minced meat cutlet and fried horse mackerel were 50 yen each (US$0.35). The total of 470 yen (US$3.30) was too cheap. I want to live nearby. It was delicious, cheap, and the best restaurant. Suddenly, here’s a quiz. What is this Michinoeki best in Japan for? [Michinoeki Esashi]. This is the parking lot. This is Michinoeki and the restroom. Can you guess what it’s best in Japan for? The answer is… It’s the smallest Michinoeki in Japan. I asked a Michinoeki employee. A parking lot needs a certain amount of space. After building the restroom, there was only 10.2 m2 left. So it became a small Michinoeki. It’s true, the inside of the store is very cramped. A small store is a no-no, a cute store is a yes. I want to be someone who can choose beautiful words. “I can work hard because I have dreams.” “The more dreams I have, the more I persevere.” “I love you.” Let’s move on. [Oiwake Soran Line]. If you go there hungry, you’ll endure too much. I’ll eat some shoyu and fried horse mackerel before going. They seem to have some pretty good fish. So what did I buy?… Essential items for a trip to Hokkaido. Wasabi. Real wasabi from Shizuoka Prefecture. Enjoying various seafood. Apparently it stretches for 500 meters. “Shirafura” means “white slope” in Ainu. Apparently GLAY (a Japanese rock band) sang here. I wonder where they sang? Apparently you can go down. It’s so hot. Where did GLAY sing? From up there? But if I take a picture from up there, the white wall won’t show up. The sea breeze is a little cool. Ouch! I hit a piece of driftwood. It’s endless, so I’ll stop here. I wonder if anyone goes that far. You have to be a real eccentric to go there. And where did GLAY sing? Everyone was so curious about the GLAY spot. Now I know where it was. It was here. Sure enough, there are two unnatural platforms. A neat and tidy restroom. There was a photo of Teru (vocalist) taking a break. Teru taking a break. What does “Teru taking a break” and “Lake Mashu” have in common? The answer is… It’s hard to find. There’s another creative spot nearby. There’s no sign of people. If you go all the way to the left, you’ll find it continues to the white wall. This is the main attraction here. Apparently it’s called “Kuguriiwa.” That place is amazing. Apparently, you can’t come here if the weather’s bad. Hydrangeas in midsummer. I went to a nearby fish market. I came across a sign at the harbor. “We’re opening an izakaya.” It ‘s closed. It was supposed to be a seafood restaurant, so it’s a shame. Ok, let’s move on. I found the magazine I was looking for at 7-Eleven. It had a coupon for a free hot spring. This magazine wasn’t available at Seico Mart. They sometimes carry it at 7-Eleven. I’m running low on water. I went to get some spring water. It didn’t look like there was spring water. Could this be it? “Spring water is unsterilized.” “Please boil it before drinking.” I tasted it. It was super cold. Drinkable. No problem. I got a lot. [Beware of bears]. Japan is home to many springs. Japan is a country rich in water. 11 liters of water. Thank you for the water. It’s nice to drink cold water. It’s delicious. I’m here now. Moving quickly. Thank you for the water. I bought some groceries at the convenience store. My maritozzo is ruined. I’m in Yagumo Town now. I was planning to go this far. But I’m tired. I’m going to sleep in my car in Yagumo Town tonight. I found a “Beware of Brown Bears” sign. There are people having a barbecue in the parking lot. That’s the parking lot. It’s quite far from the road. It looks like a quiet place to sleep in my car. I’m afraid of bears, so I’ll get back to the car quickly. It might be pitch black at night. There are no lights at all. I sneak into a park golf course. It feels like a bear might be around. I’m afraid one might come out. It’s 8:30pm. The temperature inside the car is 26°C. The humidity inside the car is high. I want to turn on the fan. For dinner, I’m having mixed vegetables from Hokkaido. I’ll put it on top of shredded cabbage. Baby cheese and tomatoes. Tofu and half-price yakitori for 65 yen [US$0.45]. Hokkaido specialty, red rice with sweetened azuki beans. A typical Hokkaido dinner. Let’s eat. Cheers. The cost of tonight’s dinner. Salad 270 yen [US$1.90], tofu and chicken 100 yen [US$0.70] , red rice 80 yen [US$0.55], adult gas 160 yen [US$1.10]. Total 608 yen [US$4.20]. Surprisingly not cheap. Without a drink it was 440 yen [US$3.00]. I’m going to the bathroom now. I’m afraid of bears. Let’s go. It ‘s pitch black. The bathroom light won’t work. The car on my right has had its engine running all this time. Is the gas okay? I’ve returned safely. Planning my plans for tomorrow. This is my current location. First thing tomorrow, I’ll fill up with gas. Then I’ll head east. I was planning to spend two or three days at Lake Toya. There’s no place to sleep along the lake. This is a problem . Should I go south? Or east? I’m torn, but I’m going to bed now. I’ll think about it tomorrow. Good night.
