As I left the train station heading to Keelung, the port town where my grandmother lived, I was immediately hit by the smell of the sea , realizing I’d arrived in a port town . Today’s lodging is also a place I’d always wanted to stay. It was converted into a hotel from a building that served as a medical clinic for 42 years, from 1959 to 2019. Its Western Baroque exterior is a cherished spot for experiencing old Keelung, a city steeped in Taiwan’s postwar and rapid economic growth . There’s a small living space at the back of the bedroom. The first floor of the lodging is a cafe, and our room even had coffee and pastries from the shop. On this trip, I wanted to cherish these moments, spending time relaxing at a lodging I’d always wanted to stay at . I headed to the port by taxi. The stacked containers give the impression of a port. Keelung’s port has a long history, and in its heyday, it was bustling with fishing boats. After declining over time, it has blossomed into the gentle port town it is today, blending the glory of its fishing past with a photogenic vibe. My grandmother was born in Tainan and grew up in Keelung. She and her sister, Nobu, often swam in the ocean in Keelung . Even after she moved to Japan, she would make daikon mochi for my mother, who had married. I wish I could have talked more about Taiwan with her now . I never thought I’d visit Taiwan so often. I was so happy to see the ocean in Keelung. I headed to a cafe with a harbor view. There are many stylish cafes and restaurants near the harbor . I bet tapioca wasn’t around when my grandmother lived there …lol. Leaving Keelung harbor behind, I headed to the evening night market . The view of Keelung from the window was refreshing. On a Sunday evening with a light rain, the night market was bustling with locals. This is the sandwich shop I most want to try at this night market. I wandered around, unsure of how to order, when someone in line told me. Apparently they issue numbered tickets. There were 83 people waiting. I browsed around for something delicious to eat while waiting. I ordered a small Taiwanese sausage with raw garlic. As the rain started to fall, I joined a long line. I’d like three for now, plus some garlic. After about an hour, my turn for a sandwich had passed. My lodging for the night was a one-minute walk from the night market, a tempting location for a quick bite. It looked incredibly delicious. It contained ham, egg, tomato, and cucumber. The sweet fried dough, tart tomato, and sweet mayonnaise… I couldn’t believe this amazing bread existed! It was so delicious I was speechless. This was a bite-sized Taiwanese sausage. I nibbled on some raw garlic while eating. It wasn’t as sweet or overly flavorful as I’d imagined, nor was it oily. I could have eaten as many as I wanted. I have a feeling I’m going to be hooked on Keelung Night Market. And now, I’m feeling incredibly sleepy . Once again, I headed out to the night market after the rain had stopped. There are many fascinating shops near the temple, so I expressed my gratitude for being in Keelung . I discovered some peanut sorbet, which seemed popular. I decided to try it. It was served in a huge cup. The rich peanut flavor reminded me of the sorbet version of the sweets I often buy in Taipei . The person eating next to me said, “Camera?” Yes, camera! How much is it? I wonder if they understand that it’s 40,000 yen in Japanese yen…? It was a wonderful time interacting with Taiwanese people , and what a lovely accordion! The sorbet cooled me down, so I decided to have some soup . To finish off, I had squid soup, listening to the accordion in the distance . Keelung Night Market is generally a place where you order in rough Chinese, and I’m not sure if I can even sit down, but the local feel is really fun. And the squid minced meat soup, with the faint texture of coriander and the black stuff the locals add to everything is black vinegar, which makes it even more delicious. I left the coriander on and it was a great way to get rid of all my baggage . Thank you for the delicious soup! It’s a tough decision… I’ve eaten too much, but… I can only eat this here… I bought a second one. I headed back to my lodgings, passing through the neon lights of the arcade and the quiet cafe. I’m aware I’ve overeaten , but this is my second. Yes, I know. Why did I buy it? I’ll eat, but before bed, I study a little Chinese. It’s at a baby level , which is rude to Taiwanese babies (even this). I’m going to bed early. It’s raining today . It was a wonderful lodging. ✨ I was thinking of getting up early and doing some morning activities, but I need a raincoat. The precipitation is so high, the bustling shops are now folded up in the alley. The morning scene at Keelung Night Market is also beautiful. I came here to buy pineapple cakes as soon as they opened. I’d like 12 pineapple cakes, please . There were freshly made pineapple cakes in the back. ☺️ 12 for 360 NTD, or 1,800 JPY. For my last breakfast in Taiwan, I had salty soy milk. Salty soy milk ? Thank you . I’ve gotten better at removing cilantro. This restaurant’s salty soy milk is light and light, with plenty of ingredients with a radish-like texture . Personally, I prefer it without . It’s the perfect Taiwanese breakfast. Since my last attempt at eating and drinking without paying, I’ve started preparing my money early . Thank you! I should have seen Rainy Port yesterday! 😭 It was a short stay, but Keelung seems like a deep port town. I ‘ll definitely come back someday. I had a great time in Taiwan for a week in February, but my last trip to Taiwan in 2025 was the most enjoyable and happy one of the year. 🥹✨ Can I get a request from my coworkers at the airport to make it less spicy? I’ll eat it in the restaurant . Oh, um, is it spicy? It’s not spicy , but it does have sesame oil, so it’s a little oily. Is it spicy? (I’m being persistent.) It’s not sour . I’ve been curious about the slightly high-end airport chicken noodles. I asked the waiter if it was spicy, but the red thing floating in the soup was a kind of medicinal food. Tender pieces of bone-in chicken floated in the fragrant sesame oil soup. It was very lightly seasoned, and tasted like noodles enjoyed with chicken broth and medicinal soup. This was my last Taiwanese meal of 2025! The Taiwanese person sitting next to me put my trunk in the luggage compartment, which was really kind. Where do you live in Taiwan? Kaohsiung This year I’ve been to Taiwan four times. Despite the crampedness and unreasonableness in Japan, I still find Taiwan empowering. If you’re thinking about going to Taiwan as a solo travel destination, I’m sure you’ll feel more energetic if you go. I hope many people have watched my videos this year. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the warm comments, likes , hype and channel subscriptions. My camera broke as soon as I got back to Japan. I’ll work hard again from tomorrow:) And soon, I’ll be heading to Taiwan again🇹🇼
